Ryskovich |
Sitting in a chair, near the back of the meeting room is a, well groomed Halfling with blonde-brown hair. His is sharpening the blade of his Falcata with his whetstone while his buckler is slung across the back of the chair. He doesn't make eye contact with anyone else, and will make idle chat if provoked, but otherwise sharpens his blade. He hums a soft Taldane tune while he does so.
The Society is just gonna send me for their next mission. I may enjoy a good challenge but I refuse to take a suicide mission
Roderick Xim |
Standing to the side is a heavily bearded human wearing leather armor covered in many pouches and bottles. He puffs on a pipe as he listens to the report. He has a long spear propped against the wall and a dagger at his belt.
This being his first official mission, he does not like the mention of suicide mission.
Speaking mainly to reassure himself than to anyone gathered...
"We best hear the details of the mission. I am sure the Society has taken our training and well being into consideration. "
GMG |
Drangdle Dreng shuffles into the meeting room, leaning heavily on a walking stick. Suffering from a cold and weak from lack of food and rest, the old venture-captain looks quite possibly the worst you’d ever seen him. He is followed by a servant carrying a chest.
Drangdle sits down in the chair behind the desk and looks at the human and halfling. His voice sounds like a whisper and you have to listen carefully to hear everything he says "Only the two of you? Where are the others I called for?"
He retrieves a note from his pocket and reads it, squinting to make out the handwriting. "Tsk, I will inform their Venture Lieutenants that they where late, never mind; you will inform Pandora, Falinar, Merida and Quinray of your mission."
“I have a routine mission for you, though a dangerous routine mission,” the old man continues. Through wracking coughs he explains, “An ally of ours in the Land of the Linnorm Kings—Rognvald Skagni—is writing a lengthy report on the state of government in the northern countries of Avistan. I received a letter from him just yesterday requesting several key documents from the vaults here to help him finish the report.”
Venture-Captain Dreng points to the large, heavy-looking chest that the servant carried in. “These are the documents, and I need you to board a ship north to deliver them to Skagni.”
Dreng tries to stand, but a fit of coughing sends him back into his seat. He gestures for the well-dressed, impeccably kept servant standing in the shadows of the room to approach and whispers raspy orders to him.
The man gives a small pouch and a large key and hands them both to Ryskovich. “Venture-Captain Dreng is unwell, as you can see. He wished me to give you this key and this pouch of gold. The key opens the chest, and the gold will buy you passage and get you from the Linnorm coast to Trollheim, where Skagni resides. Whatever you do, do not let the chest out of your sight and do not, under any circumstances, allow it to be searched. These documents are for Mr. Skagni’s eyes only. Are we understood?”
Falinar Eneok |
Bursting through the door is a creature covered in armor with a shield slightly taller than himself. The young dwarf, clearly out of breath, gasps between breaths, "My apologies Captain Dreng but this place is HUGE!!" With a nod to the others gathered, Falinar closes the door and finds a place to sit.
Roderick Xim |
Roderick listens with interest, despite the obvious weaknesses of Dreng's speech.
"Sounds like a hostile environment. What other obstacles are we expected to encounter?"
GMG |
The servant's eyes flash "Can't you see that Master Dreng is in no state to answer questions!?"
The rasping voice of Venture Captain Dreng intervenes "I do not know Roderick, the trip is a long one and the Ulfen are a proud, independent people. And then there is also the cold..." he shudders and the servant takes over as he leads the venerable Venture Captain outside.
"Best get you in bed Master, couldn't someone else brief these agents for you? Why do you insist on doing everything yourself..." you hear as they exit the room.
You are left with a chest weighing some 100 pounds and a bag of gold to buy you passage. Who carries the chest? (Please adjust encumbrance accordingly)
Roderick Xim |
"For this passage and massive chest, we best account for purchasing a mule or dogsled or something when we arrive. Crossing hazardous terrain with this thing will not be easy."
Roderick Xim |
Roderick is willing to pay full or part for a pack mule. If it seems unlikely we will be able to find one at the destination port, getting on here might be our only option. He only has 9gp, so cannot afford much else beyond his starting equipment and cold weather gear.
Pandora Soulkeeper |
Pandora enters the room and sees the party already there. "As I suspected, this Dreng forgot to place a note for us about the meeting and he already left without giving time to address questions." The woman in front of you is not beautiful, though her white bright hair, like the snow under the Sun, is exotic enough to claim your attention, and her soft voice and delicate moves make all of a charming one.
Looking at the big chest in the middle of the room she says "Do we have to take that somewhere? It looks heavy. We better go and hire a mule to take it." Taking one of the hangs she says to the human, "You there, wouldn't be of a true gallant to stop looking the lady and start helping her?" As her muscles tense, you can appreciate the considerable strength of the resolute woman.
Falinar Eneok |
"I can help with buying a mule if needed." Falinar empties his belt pouch into his hand and four meager gold coins tumble out. "Well..it's not much but it is all I have left."
Pandora Soulkeeper |
Pandora looks at the pouch and says "Thanks for the effort Falinar. But I have enough for the mule. It's always good to have devoted servants willing to please yourself."
GMG |
I assume Pandora buys a mule, bit and briddle and packsaddle, setting her back a whopping 12 gp
After an uneventful journey you manage to reach Trollheim. The directions to Skagni’s home provided by Venture-Captain Dreng’s assistant are unclear, but after a few wrong turns due to poor handwriting, you finally locate your destination. But there’s a problem: it’s been burned to the ground!
ll that remains are the stone ruins of the small home’s walls and a few scattered piles of rubble. Bits of burnt timber and ruined furniture lie scattered about, but if anything remained after the fire, it seems to have been picked over and looted. Though most of the walls are blackened
with soot, a patch along the former front of the residence still shows relatively clean, white walls. Smeared across those white walls, written in reddish-brown letters four feet tall, are the words, “Pathfinders go home.”
Pandora Soulkeeper |
Untrained Heal: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (16) - 2 = 14
Pandora approaches the writing and gets a taste of it. "Blood. It seems our friend was not liked a lot here around. I wonder whether he is still well an alive." The woman walks out and starts asking questions to first people she sees walking around.
"You can follow me or try to investigate clues in the building ruins as you wish"
She basically wants to know what has happened with the house, and what reputation and histories they know about Rognvald Skagni.
Diplomacy (gather information): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
GMG |
The streets are quiet and deserted but when a man opens his doorway Pandora is there. Unfortunately the local doesn't know anything about what happened, only that the house burned down a few weeks ago.
Waste of a natural 20, sorry
Roderick Xim |
Roderick helps Falinar and Pandora with the chest and tries not to cause any fires during the journey.
He nods in agreement at Pandora's assessment.
"The sign of blood does not bode well at all for our friend."
He takes a closer look at the note to see if it offers any other clues.

The charming woman starts looking for clues too.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Falinar Eneok |
Falinar starts poking around in the ash to see if he can find any clues. Is there an obvious flare point where the fire originated from? Anything to indicate what caused the fire?

A half-elf with black and white makeup on his face leading a purple donkey trudges toward the burnt remains of the house and says despondently "I finally found you. Looking up you see four burly Ulfen men. The three in front wear chain shirts and have a wooden shield strapped to their arm. The one behind them is armored better and has full chainmail and a steel shield strapped to his arm. They are all reaching for the next axe on their belt!

You should be able to access the map, please move your own token. The way I handle initiative: in the same block (now Roderick, Falinar and Quenray) the first to post acts first in that block. Second to post acts second and so on. If you want to delay: please post that you do so we are not waiting for each other.
Also: initiative dice and combat dice are spoilered to avoid a green mess on everyone's screen. They are public. Spoilers labeled GM Dice are not ;-)
-Quinray- |
Quinray takes a step back, pulls out his bongos, and starts drumming a battle march. Allies get a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.
Merida the Compassionate |
Sorry, I never dotted this...
A woman specified only by the wildness of her hair, hides, furs, and a falchion on her shoulder comes jogging up, and with a smirk says, "And here I thought I was going to miss my morning training."
Roderick Xim |
After getting hit by an axe, Roderick returns fire by throwing a bomb at the red thug that hurled at him.

The two Ulfen thugs fall when suddenly the ground turns very slippery. Falinar and Merida both miss their targets. Roderick fires another bomb and hurts tree of the Ulfen ambushers. The fallen men know better than to stand up next to enemies and attack back. All three attacks miss.
Roderick: Bombs at the ground target a grid intersection, see arrow on map for the intersection I picked. Also: why is splash 5 and not 6?

I knew that continuing the performance was a swift action, but I wasn't sure of what else to do. I have a little better of and idea now. So, in addition to what I posted before...
Quinray waves a hand in the direction of Big Red and mutters. Casts Unwitting Ally, DC 14 I believe...unless 0 level spells give a +1 to DC of spells.

Ryskovich disables the men in front of him with his falcata. He holds back on his second attack, not wanting to further hurt a disabled enemy.
I assume, let me know if you want to smash him in the face with your buckler
