Very cool!

”HELDAR!” the halfling barks as he dodges in for an attack. But Javi is at a loss for how to best attack an insubstantial, glyph-based un-life form.

5’ step to flank w/ Shaggar (I think I have Javi’s position correct to flank this guy given his size, but if not, Javi could also end up one square to the left with that same 5’ step)
Then attack (including Bless, flank, power attack, combat expertise, & risky striker)

Heldar falls to one knee under the terrible assault - he tries to speak but is only able to cough...

"No" - he murmurs, finally standing straight, and staring straight at the hazy creature in front of him. The Oracle is not smiling, as he takes a step back between Lyrian and Shaggar, nor is he smiling as a warm, golden light veritably bursts from him - "No!"

Crap, I did not heal myself before we opened the sarcophagus...? :/

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

*climbs stiffly back into this here wagon*

Javi's blade sings through the cloud of smoke, trailing sparks just as Shaggar's had. He feels he's damaging it some, at least!

Heldar meanwhile recoils from the sensation of the thing inside him clawing him up. He steps back (it feels as though the thing moves with him), and desperately calls on the forces of life to heal himself up.

Pharaoh's Save vs Channel: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 2 = 18 [ooc]On the nose, 8 damage taken from channel

Heldar wrote:

I don't know; did you? You certainly had enough time to do it, as you guys took twenty in searching the room. Whether you ever actually healed yourself up is on you.

Heldar Fortitude save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Fortunately for Heldar, he succeeds in hack-coughing out the jagged stream of hieroglyphics. The cloud condenses before him, becoming more solid once again, before it unleashes a barrage of attacks solely upon Heldar.

Wing 1: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
Wing 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

Claw 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

Confirm claw?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

Despite the blinding speed of the shadowy attacks, only one manages to get past Heldar's guard, a claw made of hundreds of animate hieroglyphics raking across his cheek for 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 damage.

Shaggar bares his teeth in a savage growl and brings his axe down hard towards the creature.

Shaggar primary: 1d20 + 13 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 13 + 4 = 23
Shaggar secondary: 1d20 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 4 = 16
Shaggar bite: 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 7 + 4 = 23

Primary hit: 3d6 + 9 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2, 3) + 9 + 4 = 19
Bite hit: 1d6 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 4 = 12

Shaggar tears into the thing to protect his 'pack,' even if his attacks hurt the thing less than he'd like. Behind him, Rosalia curls on the stone, shaking. Lyrian's voice rings out in Celestial, granting everyone heavenly speed. The shadowy 'form' of the pharoah seems damaged, but still dangerously functional.

Will wait to see what Heldar may eventually know, to decide how to act ;)

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

CMW is fine.

In a gameplay sense, it's hard to explain how Heldar knows this, since the Pharoah is very much a unique creature, and is basically an undead version of a completely different creature, with some templates and some bonus stuff mechanically to make him more powerful. That said, I'm not gonna deny you knowledge with that 32, I'm just saying I have no smooth narrative reason for why Heldar knows this stuff, since it's not in any book he ever read or anything. Maybe the gods just gave you a flash of divine insight. ;)

Heldar... you think that despite the fact that the Pharoah of Numbers is now... literally... numbers, he still qualifies as undead-- the burst of your radiant energy showed that much, at least. However, all the usual things when fighting undead apply immune to death effects, disease, mind-affecting, paralysis, poison, sleep, stun, etc blah blah. You think that due to the odd physical construction of the Pharaoah, he has a certain amount of physical resistance to being damaged, even by magical weapons DR 5/--. This holds true when he is "corporeal" (formed into a body), but becomes even more pronounced when he disperses into the number cloud form (DR 5/--, DR 10/magic). When in the number cloud form he can simply move over someone and be inhaled, without needing to make an attack; the damage he does inside of you is also not an attack, exactly, but something that just happens if you have Pharaoh inside of you. In other words, the pharaoh can make a full attack with his claws/etc, turn into smoke (a swift action for him), 5-foot-step over somebody, be inhaled, and still do the internal damage on that turn. Fortunately, he can only change forms once per round, and he can only be breathed in by one person at a time.

You think he's strong-willed against your channel, like, say, channel resistant perhaps.

Protection from Evil would not stop the inhalation effect, but it might help make a person be able to better resist it.

The pharoah is big enough to be able to reach ten feet away and he can apparently fly. He has no elemental resistances.

If there was anything else you wanted to know, let me know.

Between the onslaught of steel and fangs, Javi and Shaggar manage to destroy the seething mass of hieroglyphics. Shaggar spits out a few squirming black flecks and claps a heavy hand on Heldar's shoulder.

"You told us to hit hard. I believe we did so."

The pharoah's dusty and brittle remains are evaporating even before your eyes. In the now-empty sarcophagus, you see several small items wrapped in shrouding sheets of linen.

"Hey!" Javi chirps in, his words machine-gunning out due to Lyrian's speed-magics, "all still in one piece. Well, except him, but he wasn't in one piece to begin with."

He bends low and tries to poke and prod the items in their shrouds with the tip of his blade, trying to reveal them. "Now you decide to develop a sense of caution? Bit late for that."

If he can't seem to reveal the items without manually handling them, that's exactly what he'll do, laying the items bare one at a time ... fully expecting a rune, but unsure how to avoid it.

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

Javi pokes carefully at the wrapped items, using his scimitar's tip to cut away the old, brittle linens. Everyone else cautiously doesn't look, in case of runes.

In short order, Javi uncovers the following items: a carved black marble statuette of a scorpion, with rubies for eyes; four tiny models of reed boats, a candle made of black wax imprinted with many hieroglyphic symbols, a scarab amulet, a golden ankh, and an onyx ring set with a flawless, huge topaz.

None of the items he looks at have any runes visible on them, so he pronounces them safe enough.

Either Lyrian or Heldar are asked about which items are magical, and come up with a quick pronouncement of everything except for the marble scorpion as having some magic attached to it.

Lyrian Spellcraft, reed boats: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

Lyrian Spellcraft, ankh: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Lyrian Spellcraft, ring: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

Unfortunately, many of these items are somewhat uncommon. Lyrian is able to identify the ring as a ring of feather falling, however.

Rosalia has pushed herself into a sitting position and is dully watching the goings-on.

Shaggar keeps a wary eye on the illusory wall and the room-with-the-bowl as the items are looked over. "Probably a good profit in all of that," he grunts. "Good money in killing god-kings.... Well. We have that wide corridor leading off into the darkness, but other than that, we've cleared this level. I'm feeling like taking my axe to that bowl-thing and making scrap metal of it. Maybe Rosalia might feel like herself again if we do."

Shaggar is correct that, leaving aside whatever might be down this tunnel, you have cleared the rooms you know about on this level. Entrance level: cleared save for the sealed "traitor's" room; level above that was Ankana's level and is now cleared; level above THAT is where you currently are, and is cleared save for the tunnel. You know that the elevator shaft also proceeded DOWN from the entrance level, so there may be chambers further down. Where would you like to go, and how would you like to proceed at this point? Shaggar intends to carry Rosalia if it doesn't seem that she can be 'cured'.

Again, someone remind me why I didn't put any ranks in Spellcraft?

"I have nothing against that train of thought - and I would feel us all safer if that bowl would indeed be destroyed" - the oracle retorts - "My hope is, however, that the creature we have just defeated was perhaps behind it all..."

He then moves toward Rosalia - "How are you feeling?" - he asks calmly - "Relieved somehow?"

I say we make short work of the bowl, then continue moving up if there are still levels above that we can discern. I'm already packing two rings, though Feather Falling is probably better than Ring of Protection +1. In any case I'll defer to any of you guys on this.

Shaggar nods and steps back into the room with the bowl. He sets to work with his axe, and the sounds of enchanted metal ringing off the substance of the basin are heard.

Rosalia flinches at each clanging smash from the other room, looking up at Heldar with a stricken look.

"It wasn't him--" she mutters hoarsely. Another round of smashing and hacking, and Rosalia cringes, looking as if she'd love to be able to cover her ears but the bonds prevent her.

"Stop it, oh, oh, he's going to be so mad with you--" Rosalia mumbles, curling into a ball again. Shaggar grimly continues his work, then finally picks up the dented and mangled, but still largely intact, basin.

"That shaft's got to be several hundred feet deep. I'm dropping it down there to shatter when it hits the ground," he growls.

The basin drops... and Rosalia screams, shaking, for several long seconds. Then Shaggar and anyone else listening hears a distant crash echoing up the shaft, and Rosalia slumps limply to the stone floor, unmoving for several seconds.

Eventually she lifts her head, shakily, but looking a little better, not quite so much strain around her eyes. "...I... I can't hear him now."

There is no further 'up' to go to, you guys are at the top of the elevator shaft. You can follow the tunnel that goes behind the illusory wall, or you can go back down the elevator shaft, basically, and see how far down the elevator goes.

Javi watches the exchange quietly, taking a moment to catch his breath and slow his heart rate. He eyes Rosalia, nodding to her as she seems to regain a bit of her usual demeanor. "We're here for you, Rosalia. You can do this." He motions with his scimitar towards her bindings, "I'd rather have your skills in play, Rosalia. You up for continuing?"

I didn't see mention of her bindings coming off. I'd suggest we do that, as I'd love to have the opportunity to actually use Outflank as we face these challenges, if at all possible.

"Tunnel sounds good." He tosses his Wayfinder once again to Shaggar, "Give me light for scouting. And bring that ridiculous axe of yours if I scream."

Rosalia takes a deep breath, closing her eyes a moment. "I think... I think he's gone. Or... at least he's not strong enough to make me do anything, anymore."

With that assurance, her colleagues unty her. AND SHE PROMPTLY EATS YOU ALL!! Nah. No, Rosalia spends a few seconds just grabbing her cat up and hugging him tightly, to Rook's hissing displeasure before the cat twists free.

"Give me a second to study the pharaohs' riches," Rosalia suggests, and does so.

Rosalia Spellcraft, amulet: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
Rosalia Spellcraft, ankh: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

Stuff found on Ankana's body:

Rosalia Spellcraft, Headdress: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
Rosalia Spellcraft, Amulet 1: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

Rosalia works through your accumulated treasures. She's able to identify several of them, though some are still unknown: the reed boats, the ankh, the bone wand, and the bag are as yet mysterious treasures.

However, Rosalia ooooohs very appreciatively over Ankana's ornate, regal headdress (functions as a headband of intellect +2), and explains that the black candle is a candle of truth; that the scarab amulet found in the Pharaoh of Numbers' tomb is in fact a golembane scarab; that Ankana's amulet is actually a control amulet for the lion-headed statue down in the weighted-floor room, and that the crystalline flask is...

"This looks like an efreeti bottle," Rosalia says, frowning, "but there's something wrong... oh! It's cursed! Okay, don't open that one. Bleh."

It's on you guys to sort out who wants specifically useful items of loot, like the golembane scarab. As the only Int-based caster, Rosalia would benefit most from the headdress of intellect, but since I'm GMPCing her, it's fine by me if someone else wants it to boost skills or something. I'd rather people who are actually actively playing got cool magical gear than the GMPCs. Still, if nobody claims it, I'll assume Rosalia takes it and uses it.

You stuff your acquired treasures into sacks and pockets, sashes and pouches. The jewels alone will fetch a princely sum back in any civilized place... let alone the valuable magical items, and the priceless knowledge you've gathered so far. You're walking around with the wealth of god-kings!

"Two pharaohs down," Shaggar says as the group cautiously sets out to explore the tunnel that leads off behind the illusory wall. He grips his axe more tightly. "Two to go-- and we know where the traitor is, I think."

Javi merely slips ahead like a shadow, cautiously, moving at the edge of the group's light source in order to try and strike a balance between 'blind' and 'sneaky'.

After about seventy feet, the smooth, straight, featureless tunnel comes to a blank wall of the ubiquitous greenstone marble. Javi, ever cautious, checks and probes for secret doors, only to discover that-- much like in the previous room-- his hand goes through the wall here as well.

Not sticking up a map for this one unless it becomes necessary, but basically you are all at the end of a ten-foot square hallway, Javi a little ahead of everyone else, and he's found another wall that isn't actually there. Javi/anyone else, what would you like to do?

Rosalia takes the moment to whisper, "...I want to thank you all for... for helping me shake him off. It was awful. And thank you for saving Rook, Heldar."

After the long hours spent in the dark chill of the pyramid's interior, depending only on magical glows for lighting, it's enough to make him blink rapidly.

Oh, also he's really high up. And the ground is really far down.

Javi Reflex save: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

Fortunately his balance is excellent, and he was careful not to commit any of his body weight to his forward head-sticking-through, because the ground is about four hundred and fifty feet below him. Granted, the pyramid's side slopes down before him, so it wouldn't be a straight fall-- just a long, long, steep, smooth roll all the way down. Basically, Javi is peeking out from one of the sides of the pyramid, fairly nearly the top.

As Javi blinks rapidly to acclimate his vision to the daylight, he sees something of note:

Down at ground level near the remnants of one of the previous excavation attempts, there are six tethered camels, that certainly weren't there when you guys entered the pyramid. You left yours tethered in a little half-a-cave alcove along the canyon wall.

HP 54/54 NL 1 :: AC 23 T 18 FF 16 :: CMD 23 :: F +8 R +12 W +4 :: Initiative +6 Perception +12 (-4 sight-based/+2 traps) :: Google Doc

After a painful half a minute of trying to blink away the pain of his eyes adjusting to the harsh sunlight, Javi squints down at the camels.

Does it look like there is any gear or equipment to help Javi understand their owners' intents or purposes? Camping gear? Excavating gear? Details about the owners themselves? Anything useful?
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22

After a few minutes of observation, he pulls his head back through ... into the now-super-gloomy darkness. He pokes his hand through the illusory wall as he once again struggles to adjust his eyes to the lighting conditions. "This is an external wall ... nothing but sunlight and sands out there. Oh yah, and camels. Six of 'em. Didn't see the riders, so we likely have company in here. Something to look forward to as we head back down."

"An external wall..?" - Heldar seems a little confused at the notion - "It leads outside?" - he adds, and upon confirmation from his companion, he moves carefully through it, until his face is basked by the external light - "I need to feel the Sun in my face for a few moments" - he comments with a smile.

If he risks falling down, Heldar will not do it ;)

Back inside, he seems to be wearing a persistent smile - "That felt very good" - he beams, then turning to Javi - "Lets be doubly careful then - I have a bad feeling about whatever interlopers we may find in here. If we are lucky, they will be mere explorers like ourselves"

Ready to head back down.

"If necessary, this is our fallback," says Lyrian. "It comes with an escape route, even if it's not one we'd prefer to use in safer times."

"As for the camels, those'll be the Chelaxians we heard about on the journey here. And I'll just bet they're not eager to share. We should try to be as ready for battle as we can be before leaving here. Remember, if we get into a fight, target their spellcasters first. Shaggar, if there is a fight, don't worry about guarding us. Javi, Heldar and I can do that well enough for a little while. If you can, you take out their arcane caster, then their divine caster, if they have either. Rosalia, in any combat I want you at the back, with me."

Otherwise, he seems ready to head down.

Lyrian smiles. "Hit the spellcasters not in armor first," he says.

Javi, the camels are at least 500 feet away from you, probably more given the pyramid slope angle. You're lucky that camels have a very distinguishable silhouette what with the humps and all, or you might not have been able to tell their species at all. Alas, you can't really tell with what particulars they are kitted out.

Heldar is able to get a bit of the sun on his face, and Rosalia joins them, sighing. "Oh, it's so bright," she 'complains', but she sounds happy to see the sun all the same.

Shaggar nods at Lyrian's words. "Aye, always a good rule of thumb." He flexes his dewclaws briefly, smiling to himself.

Heldar: no, a cursed item is a cursed item. Remove curse would break the spell on a PC affected by the curse contained in the flask (if anybody had foolishly opened it), but it doesn't 'fix' the item itself. As for the amulet... well, normally I'd say "you guys would have to try it to find out" but I'd like to keep our momentum going, so I'm just going to tell it to you like this: yes, you could use the amulet to control the golem. However, it is too large to make it out the room's exits, as it can't effectively bend and squeeze to get out the door. And yes, the room was actually constructed around the golem, heh.

Rosalia seems reluctant to leave the bright sun, but steps back inside. "I'm able to go on. Mostly I just really want to kill something, you know?"

I'll assume you guys are going to go back to the elevator, wait for the platform, and start heading down using it, unless someone tells me otherwise.

"De-crypt," offers Lyrian.

Insert obligatory apology for my slowness in moving us forward. Also, "de-crypt" makes me think of Erfworld. Which is a good thing.

Rosalia nods. "Well, whatever you want to call it, I'm ready to destroy any more undead, or anything else that tries to mess with my mind again," she says grimly. "Let's go..."

Shaggar nods his assent and takes the lead on the walk back to the elevator shaft, eager to reunite with faithful Hatyah.

Elevatoryness?: 1d60 ⇒ 53

The group makes their way back to the lift, and are fortunate in that only another seven minutes pass before they can feel the trembling vibrations in the stone that marks the lift's ascent. The group piles on again, close quarters even without Hatyah, but when the stone platform descends to the level where the hyena had been left, she jumps on as well, making things worse. Rosalia oofs as the hyena makes itself at home between her and Shaggar, bumping her into the wall. Rook hisses idly from atop Rosalia's shoulder.

Intimately acquainted with each other's personal space, the group waits out the slow descent of the tireless construct. Shaggar taps an idle claw against his new scarab amulet. "This thing confirms that our transportation is a golem," he rumbles.

As the elevator reaches the level that they had first come in on, Heldar, Shaggar, and Rosalia think they hear voices somewhere off in the marble corridors.

Shaggar whispers, "Is that Smart?"

Rosalia answers in kind, "That, or the owners of those camels..."

They and Heldar cannot make out the wors, merely that there are voices. The lift is still descending at its unhurried but inexorable pace: staying on, or getting off?

Shaggar shrugs and prepares to step off the moving platform. Rosalia shifts her grip on her sword's hilt and does the same.

Heldar is advocating for getting off the elevator and going to go see who's here and why. In-character, though the elevator is moving fairly slowly, you still don't have ALL that long to decide. As of right now, I'm assuming Heldar is getting off the elevator or getting ready to get off the elevator; so if Javi and Lyrian aren't doing so, then say so so your GM can split the party. ;) Or so you guys can grab Heldar, or something.

Usual question for Javi: are you moving with a light source? Since stealth is effectively nerfed if you are....

HP 54/54 NL 1 :: AC 23 T 18 FF 16 :: CMD 23 :: F +8 R +12 W +4 :: Initiative +6 Perception +12 (-4 sight-based/+2 traps) :: Google Doc

I'm never playing a scout without Darkvision again. Let's go with the whole "Heldar holds a light source and Javi tries to stay close and just use physical cover to remain unseen" schtick ... as opposed to him actually being out front and just relying on the darkness to grant him stealth. That work?

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

It works, I'm just verifying that's what you're doing right now. ;) And yeah, it is a pain in the ass to try and scout with no light source, but most of the time scouts aren't also stuck in one massive structure that has 'darkness' as a prevailing condition.

Ok, off the lift it is - Heldar will renew his 'Light' spell on the tip of his spear. By the way, I can cast the Light spell on anyone else's weapon or piece of gear, just in case you may think that Heldar is not the best 'mark' to be carrying around the only light source in a dark tunnel. Just a thought :D

And Javi, one way or another, even more so as a scout, you will always have to face the 'darkness monster' - I played a scout like character once without Darkvision (he had in mind taking Orcish Eldritch Heritage in the future, and would eventually gain Darkvision) and that was it - I am NEVER doing it again. You either begin play with some magical way of already seeing in the dark (a ton of Darkvision potions would work), or it gets really messy and complicated to overcome. 'Say Scout ma friend, could you go up front and take a look?' Scout shrugs - 'Not really' :P

The stealth stuff turns out to be sort of irrelevant in retrospect, heh.

Javi sidles out carefully into the corridor, quiet as a mouse-- but of course, such stealth does him little good when the lights from behind him cast his shadow on the green marble floor, and when there's little cover from watchful eyes.

No sooner has Javi peeked around the edge then a sharp male voice calls in Common, "Someone's here!"

Looking towards the source of the voice, Javi sees a human man down at the end of the hall, in the room of the riddle-statues. The man is vaguely familiar-- Javi might remember catching a glimpse of him at the auction house, what feels like a lifetime ago-- he had been the lean, rangy man standing next to the opulently-dressed Chelaxian. He bears the look of a man who's spent most of his life out of doors, and has a long staff (?) or something like it... that pings a memory Javi of something heard as well, the Neversword's description of a fellow he called Scepter.

The staff/stick is lifted Javi's way, and the man says shortly, "Stop there!"

Shaggar and the others are just out of sight at the moment, hidden by the wall of the elevator room. Shaggar arches brows at Heldar, big paws curled around his axe. "If it's talking you wish, sayyid, do it before I talk in my fashion," the gnoll whispers.

Javi stays where he is, adopting a casual stance, hands in pockets. ”We should play cards some time,” Javi quips brightly in lightly-accented Taldan, ”you’re a terrible liar. How’d you know we were coming? Your fancy stick tell you?”

Yes, human. Map updated, btw.

The man arches both brows at Heldar's forthright appearance, and snorts at his words. He does lower the stick, though, pointing it at the floor rather than forward.

"Julistar!" he says over his shoulder, though his eyes don't leave Javi and Heldar.

"Our friends wishes to negotiate 'exploration terms.' On account they got here first. D'you want to talk to them?"

In answer, another man steps into view behind the rangy stick-holder-- a tall man with obvious Chelish coloring and Asmodean symbols on his robes, who you remember clearly from the auction. He gazes down the corridor towards Javi and Heldar, with no expression on his face you can perceive at this distance.

"I highly doubt we can come to any agreement," he says after a pause. "You are under a certain misapprehension regarding the extension of the law to activities such as these, I think. Still, I'm a reasonable man... despite the considerable irritation and inconvenience you and yours have posed to me. What 'terms' would you offer?"

The lean man in the front rolls his eyes at his companions' wordiness.

Javi: Sorry, missed the roll. Brain-dead GM. You can't see anyone other than Stick Guy and Julistar, but you can hear the occasional movement from beyond both of them-- the scrape of metal on metal, and low voices-- so you'd guess that's where others would be, in that room with the four statues.

Regarding the stick, here was Xaven's description of it: "Sort of an odd, long stick with metal bits. He's got magic wands lashed to it, that much I could tell." You can see what he was talking about with the wands. It's not perfectly straight. On that 22, I'll say you've heard rumors out of Alkenstar-- sticks that shoot lumps of lead, so fast they can punch right through armor.... could be that.

At Javi's needling questions, the lean man with the stick merely looks back at him across the intervening distance, fingers twitching against the strange weapon he holds. Julistar, on the other hand, doesn't deign to even glance at Javi, seeming to direct all his words to Heldar.

Nothing in particular on the sense motive for you, sorry.
