Death and Taxes - GM Budd the C.H.U.D.'s Feast of Ravenmoor

Game Master Budd the C.H.U.D.

In life, only two things are inevitable - death and taxes. An investigation into a missing tax collector from Magnimar led our heroes to the isolated village of Ravenmoor, but what they found there was a community dominated by a cult of Ghlaunder, God of Parasites. They also uncovered the identity of the twisted being responsible for the corruption of the town, and learned that this same being has sinister plans for a small, isolated city in the mires of Ustalav. Carrion Hill beckons...

Enormous Radioactive Monster - - hp tons/tons - - AC nuh-uh I got forcefield

Discussion thread is now open. Feel free to dot in and say hello!

Anybody want to continue brainstorming how your characters might know one another?

Human Barb 1/Rgr 2/Rog 2 HP 41 AC 19, touch 12, flat-footed 17 Fort +6, Ref +8, Will +1 Init +4 Perception +9 Sense Motive +7 Evasion

Whoooooohah!

I'm actually running a large tabletop IRL tomorrow so I won't be posting until later that night. Sorry!

Hello though and I'll get into the zone of the character soon.

Also first game on these forums, so bear with my formatting, I'll adjust to the status quo!

(Posting on Dramin when IC).

Sweet. :) Hello there! Don't burn that village down before I am there, too. :D

Hello hello! Checking in and stoked to be here! I'm with Calwen... no burning the village!

As far as knowing one another, one leap off point is with Warshawski and myself as Magnimar inspectors; her as a tax official, me as a violent crimes sort. I think she had a great lead in for a professional sense of competition between the two. Because Bacarov's been investigating the disappearances of administrative types, he's called in to work a "foul play" angle. While Warshawski is brought in to work the tax angle and criminal misdeeds?

For Bacarov and Marsh, he visits the man from one to time in Lowcleft. A year prior Bacarov had been chasing down a lead to the grizzled man's doorstep...or rather the seedy dive Marsh called home. Seeing the man he used to be, Sebastian enlisted Marsh's aid in the case he'd been working. The man knew the area and Sebastian needed eyes and ears he could trust. After all, there were few of the City Watch who ventured into Rag's End. - Mr Marsh can of course elaborate or alter.

If Sebastian is being assigned the case, he'd want to bring Marsh along. His insight and toughness would be an asset. Besides, it'd get him out of that rat hole he calls a tavern.

Other thoughts, Silas might be assigned to work with Warshawski? Not sure. There's also Bacarov; his fondness for the Law puts him in Abadar's church from time to time to speak with the priests there regarding interpretations of Magnimar's short list of laws. Maybe a connection there?

For Dramin and Dalton, skills for the open road and rural locations? They'd be needed so perhaps recommendations passed from locals who know their work? Or perhaps they are working with Calwen who seems like she's got a great reason to be there already?

I had some time tonight so I thought I'd spitball a bit. What do you guys think? What would link us?

--------

Sebastian Current Case:

...

"Not that I could find. The girl in his room had left, gone to another client."

Olfrey grumbles at the last. It wasn't a well kept secret that Capital officials sometimes took in the night life of Lowcleft. But it didn't make it any less reprehensible to the Captain. This is his first meeting with the man, and Bacarov already likes him for that fact.

Olfrey opens the satchel and looks inside, a few heartbeats later he closes it and fastens the clasps. "I may have something for you, Inspector Bacarov. Another official has gone missing."

You act like what you just saw, the thing that made my stomach burn and my dinner spill all over that alley, you make it seem pedestrian. It's his trim to crease a brow. It's not the first time you've seen the like... Bacarov snaps back to the present and answers cautiously, the captain had just asked him a question. "Where, sir?"

"This one is going to take you out of town." He reaches to the corner of his desk and slides over a scroll case. "How do you feel about tax collectors?"

Like Hubaris, I've got things to do today that will keep me from posting anything of significance until I get home. Weekends are always a bit slower for me. I'll post tonight.

Enormous Radioactive Monster - - hp tons/tons - - AC nuh-uh I got forcefield

@Hubaris and Warshawski - Me too. I'm working late tonight and have an awkward mid-shift tomorrow, so posting will be somewhat sporadic until tomorrow night. That said, I'll have my laptop with me, so I will be checking in during breaks. This time of year is hectic for everybody, so I understand it'll be tight for the next couple days.

Okay everybody, here's what your characters should know going into the meeting with your client.

1. Your person who has hired you for this job is a low-ranking clerk in the tax office of Magnimar named Jeminda Anikee.

2. The mission involves traveling to some distant town called Ravenmoor to investigate a possible serious tax fraud and/or evasion scheme. No further details available until meeting with Ms. Anikee.

3. There's more to this than missing taxes, however. A tax collector was sent out to Ravenmoor to look into this several weeks ago; he has yet to return or even send word of his progress, which seems to be a major cause for concern. Uncovering the whereabouts of this tax collector is the other major goal of this job- hopefully, he's still in one piece.

@Calwen - Rather than being sent directly to meet up with the party approaching Ravenmoor, you're going to be asked to meet up with Galeth's dryad lady-friend to learn more about the blightings and any possible connection with the nearby community. Sound good? Also, would you like to name this dryad, or shall I?

[Img] [Stats] [Info] Female Elf Cavalier 3

Erm... name. Fey. Erm. Yes. One moment.

All right, I went through perceived three billion possibilities. My standard name for fey is "Nephexia" (just happened to be a side character in some of my stories, the last of which was a nymph blood sister of a CG human sorceress with fey blood line and failed druidess I have), however, that's rather nymphish than dryadish.

I thought of playing on plant parts or weather conditions... Nutienne, Barkana, Leavly, Rainy, Acyrne...

To get back to the "x" I considered animal variations Lynxia, Phyxen. But that does not sound matching at all...

But I think it would be advisable to somehow build in the reason why Galeth likes her in the first place. Maybe she particularly likes music?

Well, I think "Lyila" (three syllables) sounds good (after considering "Lyrica", "Lyrixa" and "Lyrila")

Human Barb 1/Rgr 2/Rog 2 HP 41 AC 19, touch 12, flat-footed 17 Fort +6, Ref +8, Will +1 Init +4 Perception +9 Sense Motive +7 Evasion

Vinny cracks his knuckles.

"I'd rather finish off another flagon, but I need the coin. How much this gonna pay anyway?"

Enormous Radioactive Monster - - hp tons/tons - - AC nuh-uh I got forcefield

@Calwen - Lyila is good. Galeth needs a reason to like her other than that she's a dryad? ;) Music lover sounds fine. Also, her tree is free of giant ticks. That has to count for something!

@Vincent - Ehhh... not that much.

They wanted to send me to the very finger tips of the city's reach. A whole village wasn't paying their taxes and the last guy they sent vanished like a vampire in daylight.

The last guy was a paper pusher. Him going poof meant someone bigger, badder and nastier needed to go scope out the situation.

Turns out, that someone was me. I wonder who I pissed off in the tax office hierarchy this time.

To pile crap on top of the shit pile, I'm not going aline. An entire village skipping out on their taxes combined with a vanishing collector apparently means big deal with a capital B.

So, I sat back in my office and looked over the list of who they were sending. My four new best friends.

Sebastian Bacarov, I knew. He works murder. I work tax dodgers. You'd be surprised how often those two beats crossed over. Whenever Bacarov and I slammed into each other during a case there were fireworks. He always thinks blood spilled trumps money lost. He never seems to get that tax cases are easier to build than murder raps.

His some-times partner's a thug named Vincent Marsh. I'm not saying the guy doesn't have a brain knocking around his skull. He just doesn't like letting the world know it. Worse, I owe the bastard one. He took a throwing axe to the arm on account of me, once. The axe was aimed at my spine.

I'd heard of Dramin Jodare before but I didn't know the guy. A fighter by trade, he had a reputation for staying one step ahead of every blade, bullet and arrow thrown at him. The whispering spirits tell me there's something more to him, though. I'll need to keep an eye on him. I don't like secrets. They always lead to someone trying to give me a haircut with a broadsword.

I didn't know this Dalton "the Thirsty" Thorpe guy. The list says he's an unarmed combat specialist. One of those types who spend as much time talking philosophy as they do breaking heads. Considering I get my best tips from incorporeal informants I can respect that but I'll probably still laugh if he busts out "words of wisdom".

Strange mix. This feels bigger than just some rural village skipping their yearly tax collection. The spirits agree.

Looks like the office is sending me straight up hellfire creek in a leaky, overloaded boat.

What else is new?

Sebastian leans back in his chair, the wood of drunken years creaking and grins. "Payment, Marsh? You'd think you were up for a protection job with Doolun's Lads, eh? No this is Watch business. A mystery and a collection and a few days out of the city." He takes a draw on his pipe. "Warshawski will be attending, it's her case to be true. I'm just along for the awful scent of foul play this seems to be giving. Anyway, she still owes you for that handy axe scar on your forearm."

Bacarov looks down at the mug of rot-gut. "Other side of it, I'm on a case that might be tied to this business in Ravenmoor. At least that's why Olfrey sent my name to Jeminda Anikee. The tax man's disappearance may be connected, mayhap not...but I could use the change of perspective. I've been too close to this for too long."

He looks up from the mug and sees Marsh hasn't stopped looking at him. "What's the word, Marshy? Care to take a walk?"

"Heh, I wasn't expectin to get rich off of civil service, but I at least need to make a few silvers to cover rent ya know? Even this dump, as you call it, has a landlord. . . "

Marsh pushes his mug and plate back and begins wiping his hands from the evening's meal.

"Thanks for the meal Sebastian, but what I'm gonna say next has nothin to do with you buyin me fancy food and the good stuff. . . "

The big man shifts awkwardly in his seat like he was going to say something for a few moments before he finally surrenders and looks a bit sheepish and defeated.

"Damn it . . . Alright I'm in. If you're smelling a dead body there's going to be one and I'll be gods damned if it's gunna be yours. Running around trying to mop up wet work with that stuffy tax broad! Somebody's gotta have your six."

He sits back I his chair and drops his eyes.

I've given you every opportunity to leave this place behind, Vinnie. Bacarov bows his head in appreciation of the honor. Why do you punish yourself, my friend?

"I know." He responds finally. A brief pause and he continues. "My father says you never showed last week. You're good for what he's got, Vinnie. Pop's has his hands full with those cadets. You'd be a big help." He holds up a hand and uses the other to poke the stem of his pipe in Marsh's direction. "Just think about it. In the meantime, Warshawski's waiting for us at the Drunken Dog. Ready to take a walk? "

This should work to link me to Jeminda Anikee and the group.

Spoiler:

Dramin looked upon his current maestro with disdain. Why is it that he wants to send me out? He seriously can't still be mad that I disproved his entire suite of anthropological theories. That would be far too petty, why are people so petty anyway? Can't they just acknowledge their betters?

He hadn't really been paying much attention to his rant, and usually only caught words here and there. It wasn't really necessary though as he already knew what was coming way beforehand.

... get up north and show me that your thesis is...

Dramin stifled a yawn to at least maintain appearance, but it was a futile attempt at best and only served to make the maestro louder, and that really just made thinking of an easy route up north a little more difficult.

... of course if you do you can have funding and your own access to the facilities...

He had to placate the man or he would die of old age here and now.

All right, all right, I'll go and when I'm back you're seriously going to eat your hat old man.

Dramin had no time for the entire talking thing and left as abruptly as the comment came out, spinning on his heel and heading straight to the streets, leaving a confused, disoriented and very pissed off maestro in fumes.

His only problem now was to find a way up north, find a smaller town without industry and get his research and his own anthropological counter-theories done. The faster he got the data he needed, the faster he could get out of this place and study with pure freedom and pure self reward. He decided to check in with a contact of his, Giacomo Telor, and hopefully land a ride to somewhere reasonable and either for free or even better, for payment.

Shortly after Dramin found himself on a doorstep and knocking. Giacomo, open up its Dramin. I'm looking for a fixup. The little window opened up at the door for a fraction of a second and then the sound of a latch and a lock turning was heard. The door opened to reveal a halfling who looked a touch too sun drenched for a recluse and he quickly gestured Dramin inside.

Look here you. You always come to me and you always leave behind a trail of pissed off clients. I only opened the door to give you a courtesy of telling you in person that I can't afford to toss you fixups anymore. He looked sincere enough but at the same time the relief from that statement was palpable.

Dramin bent over and just smiled. Here's the problem though Giac, I'm just too damn good to pass up. Sure I may leave a bunch of pissed off clients, but at least I get the jobs done. If they can't handle my greatness and my attention to---

Getting sidetracked? The halfling gave him that look.

Sure we'll say that, sidetracked. Perhaps I get into too much detail, and perhaps maybe I find stuff they don't want found, and perhaps sometimes I use their coin to advance my own scholarly agendas and take a little bit of liberty here and there... Dramin smirked and ran a coin through his fingers. But I always get the jobs done, and you always get paid. So here's the thing, I need to get to a small town, preferably up north to kill two birds with one stone, and I would like to get some cash out of it. You have any words out there?

Before the sentence was done, the halfling pulled out a sheet from his desk, how he got there so quickly would forever be a mystery Dramin wanted to solve when he had some time.

There's one regarding a group of people in need of a knowledgeable and capable soldier. You could probably do that yeah? From what I hear some of the people going are pretty well trained, you might pick up a thing or two about subtlety.

Dramin looked at the sheet and ignored the small man's smaller comment. Ravenmoor? The name wasn't ringing many bells outside of a few small facts here and there about the layout of the land, the location and the general lack of industr---Done. Set up a meeting with this Jeminda then. He was already on his way out. Oh and if you get any information regarding Ravenmoor or the crew heading there, let me know as soon as you can. And with that he was already gone, door closed behind him.

The halfling shouted out through the door's viewing hole shortly after, Don't make me regret this one! I swear this is the last of the last times Dramin! This wasn't nearly as sincere, and he kicked himself for it.

Not to s#@g her, but to actually fall in love with her is a different story. Besides... *blush* did I mention that Calwen plays the flute (literally) and this may give her an angle to earn her trust as well? This is purely coincidental of course.

I like to think Warshawski is a little more creepy than stuffy. :) After all, she tends to stare off into space and then announce some fact or clue that she couldn't possibly know. Everyone knows she talks to the dead.

I looked at the names on the sheet and went into the depths of my memory to see if the names ever popped up in my life.

Sebastian Bacarov. The murder detective. From what I know he means business and doesn't seem to stray far from the law. A fairly devout worshiper of Abadar, it makes him a little easier to pin down. I wouldn't want to be on the other side of him if his quarry was behind me.

Vincent Marsh. A thug of a man, I don't know much about him and frankly I don't care to know any more. From what I gather he is straightforward on the outside and tends to show off his energy and emotion. A savage fighter who may even be able to get a hit in on me... if I was asleep perhaps.

Warshawski. A detective who works cash, I suppose she would be in the same circles as Bacarov though her manners of working are much different. The rumours say that she is a medium who talks to spirits; most may laugh but I know better. I know what its like to see things others can't and I'll give her the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

Dalton "the Thirsty" Thorpe. One of those martial artists who revels in enlightenment and self satisfaction. I can definitely get behind that, and if he is just as capable in combat I can get behind that even more. I hope he's a talker because I do love the mysticism and perhaps we can trade philosophy if he so desires.

Thankfully they seem like good people. I just hope they can keep up with me and don't delay my thesis deadline too much. I wouldn't be very pleased with losing my archive access.

@Warshawski: I'll definitely work that into place - the creep factor. Bacarov is so focused on not leaning on his magical ability (hence my feat and skill selection) I'm thinking he views her as a near space oddity for embracing such connections.

Dalton regarded Anikee, the clerk hiring him in Magnamar, with some trepidation. Doubt rose within his chest that this pencil-pusher could possibly know the details of a location with suitable danger. As he listened to the accountant, however, Ravenmoor seemed to fit the bill. He cared little and less for tax evasion, beyond his general dislike for those who flaunt the law of the land, but the disappearance of the collector surely bore investigating.

He accepted the assignment and watched as Anikee added his name to a list and told him where to go to meet up with Warshawski - an establishment called the Drunken Dog. He accepted the writ of assignment with a small, wordless smile.

When the monk arrives at the Dog, he lowers his hood to reveal his nearly-hairless head. Two days of stubble stand out on top of his head, revealing the beginnings of what his hairline would be, but he has no facial hair whatsoever. His chin is marked with three vertical lines from lip downward, black paint forms a mask across his eyes, and a hesitant smile is on his face.

Standing near the doorway for a moment, Dalton's eyes sweep the crowd, searching for anyone who matched the description of those he was assigned with. He was eager to introduce himself.

@Everybody - :D

Gameplay thread is up! Let's get this party started!

A question and a comment.

If I want to perform a knowledge check (which is usually done in secret I find), how do I go about doing that? New forums still for me.

Also I apologize for formatting and the funny posts during the day as I'm on mobile during EST work hours and its a pain to type on one of these.

Edit: Also how would you like me to show my prepared spells for the day?

Weird. I'll double-check.

It's not set to inactive or anything. What I do is just bookmark the campaign tab and go straight to that from my browser. It tells me if there are any new posts on any of the linked threads. Seems to be working fine on my end, so let me know if it still isn't showing up for you and I'll take another look.

@Hubaris - As far as knowledge checks go, you seem to have done the dice roller command correctly on your first post in there. If I don't roll one for you, just throw it in. Even if one doesn't turn out to be called for, hey, rolling is fun! As far as your prepared spells, put them in a spoiler tab on your character profile. Next time you prepare a new set for the day, just erase the old ones and throw in the new.

Sure thing then.
I was worried about hitting preview post and seeing the result beforehand so I was hesitant to actually hit the button :3

As for spells, I'll do the spoiler thing then!
Ignore it until tomorrow (in game) rolls around, spent my casts on Heightened Awareness to get information on everything before we hit the tavern.

Enormous Radioactive Monster - - hp tons/tons - - AC nuh-uh I got forcefield

Okay, cool. It's okay to preview and see your result, then change your post slightly to reflect a perceived win or loss, by the way. I usually will do that if I'm fairly sure I missed an attack roll or something, and work that into my description.

I'll keep that in mind then.
Also I post like a fiend when I'm not at work, if I do post too much just give me a little nudge!

@Warshawski: Were you having trouble with the campaign thread showing up under your previous campaigns section? I can't seem to get it to show up in my current campaigns section.

@Bacarov: No. When I went to preview my profile to make sure I had set it up right, I got dumped to the main forums page and all my info was wiped. The campaign shows up under the My Campaigns tab. The reason it isn't show up for you is, and I'm not sure why this is, you aren't listed as a character or player in the campaign. How odd.

Ok, I think I get it.

@Budd: Can you go to your Campaign Tab, edit it, then check and see if my character is listed as active vs inactive? That's probably it. I've done rat before in a previous campaign I've run.ThThe listing for me on the characters tab shows Sebastian as a Previous Character

Eureka! Thanks!

For now my tone didn't really match with that of the others - it's a bit like Philip Marlowe meets Alice in Wonderland. But I trust that will rectify itself when we get together.

I think your posts are lovely, Calwen. I'm enjoying reading them.

Ditto! You're going to be rather alien and otherworldly compared to us down to earth humans, but frankly, I like a little alien otherworldlyness to my elves.

Intentional on my part. You are the party's only non-human, after all. :) But yes, the tone of Calwen's little adventure will align itself with the noirish escapades of the Magnimar party very shortly.

Agreeing with the others. The time is awesome. I was actually imagining the Alice in Wonderland motif when reading.

If there's nothing really planned for investigating last ties in Magnimar for Elias, is be fine with doing Gather Information rolls. Bacarov is just being thorough.

Go ahead and make a roll for that. Also, if anybody does decide to check Elias Kyle's home, give me a Perception roll to spot anything useful.

Just realizing I could have taken a 20 on that Search check or just done an Aid Another roll to give Bacarov a bonus. Assuming people go along with Warshawski's plan. :)
