Dark Sun ala Fabian - To Save a Dying World (Inactive)

Game Master Fabian Benavente

Dark Sun played with Pathfinder Rules (and a healthy dose of house rules) focused on the on-going story of an unlikely group of heroes called to destiny.

Valsavis looked over his wounds, silently thankful for the healing both Ala'a and Barega had provided. Nodding along with Gbaji, "Yes, hopefully the loss of water won't impede our progress. Let us gather our things and get moving, we still have a templar and his goons on our trail. I think we'd all agree that we should make as much progress as possible before setting up camp for the night." He made to right the wagon and assisted the others with properly stowing away Korgunard, ensuring as much comfort as possible was provided to the glowing man-turned-diety. That being done he checked his weapons and scrubbed sand across whatever wounds he had left that were still open, grimacing. Finally, he turned his eyes to the road ahead, eager to make use of their good fortune.

Taking the opportunity to reiterate that I am having LASIK surgery on Wednesday and, depending on the recovery time, I may be absent from the boards for a day or two until my eyes are healed.

"Yes, let's use the light we have left to find a better campsite for the night - I don't like the smell of this place, and I'd like to find a place out of view in case some other foe comes calling," Ala'a said, helping to reload their gear after Valsavis and Gbaji righted the wagon.

Ala'a will use her remaining 1st- and 2nd-level spell slots to cast cure spells when they stop to rest, working from most-wounded to least.

Good luck on your surgery!

Camping on a road in the middle of a desert is seldomly a good idea. We could at least hide behind some dunes and hide our tracks. Or perhaps we find a cave or something. Ala´a, you´re probably best at such things right? I can keep first watch. We need to find some new water too. I´m pretty thirsty already.
Lalali licks her dry lips, still bowed over Korgunard. She sits up, holding one of his legs. Looking at Gbaji: Putting him back is a good idea. Can you help me please

How does the further environment look like? Plain desert? Or some rocks?

M Halfling Druid 5

Barega watched with bemusement as the human girl crawled around sniffing the area.

He shivered as the flame blew through him, cauterizing the worst of his wounds. He had not worked with a follower of the Flame so extensively before. Different approach, but it was not so bad. He looked up at Ala'a. "Thank you, elf."

Barega moved among the kanks, trying to calm them while the others repacked the wagon. "Yes, let's get moving."
He stiffly climbed back up onto the seat, and began to coax the frightened animals into motion once more.

Barega will again use Pass without trace on Ala'a and the kanks when we are 4-5 hours out from camping (just to up the tracking DC some), look for a reasonable place a ways off the road to set up shop, and then use Hide campsite for the night.

Ala'a wanted to fall on the ground and curl up into a ball as soon as they settled on a camp, but she forced her weary legs to complete another circuit around the site, checking for dangers and helping Barega conceal their tracks.

"We can use the same watch order as before," she said. "Gbaji can take the first watch. Lalali, now that you're awake you can sit with me for the second. Barega and Valsavis will take third watch together."

Seeing no disagreement, she unrolled her blankets and allowed herself to sink to the ground. A day in which I didn't become a meal for thri-kreen is a good one... she thought as she shut her eyes, fingers curled tightly around the hilt of her sword.

~~~~~~~~~0~~0~~~~~~~~~~
Ala'a stumbled as the vision cleared, nearly falling to her knees - she'd been in the middle of hoisting her pack to her shoulders when the episode began and only a split second seemed to have passed.
Not by the roads ..., that much seemed clear. She peered west into the desert. Somewhere out there the templar and his hunters stalked them. She saw no sense in putting the group in their path. But the voice in the dream had been insistent.
"Turn the kanks. We must get off the road. Barega, fly high and tell us what you see - I'd like to no more of our surroundings before we chart a course."
1
Gbaji was grateful for the respite for the rest of that day. the encounter with the 'kreen, and then their fleeing before the unconscious Kornugard, was more than a little confusing. He was tired, but didn't demur when Ala'a "volunteered" him for first watch and promptly went to sleep. The elf woman had proved her worth. To keep himslef awake he asked Lalali, "So, what did you find out from Kornugard? Anything?"
2
Gbaji recovered his wits as the vision receded. He nodded in agreement with Ala'a. This was clearly a message, and what with everything else going one, one he also intended to listen to.
M Halfling Druid 5
1.
Barega was relieved when they finally found a steep hill that offered a campsite with some concealment and shelter from the wind. He unhitched the kanks and tied them off to the wagon by a longer length of rope that would allow them to graze, and asked one of the others to look after them for a bit.
He then moved about the site, once again calling on the spirits of the land to help conceal it from their enemies (Hide Campsite). He moved about surveying the result, and was satisfied.
He found, to his surprise, that he was grateful for Ala'a's assistance as he wearily truged back a ways along their trail, gently pushing sand back into the ruts left by the wheels of the cart.
"Thank you again, elf. Wind willing, these will be better covered by sand drifts in a few hours. Perhaps our strange turn of luck will hold until then. I have never seen anything like it, the behavior of those thri-kreen...his presence changed them. This is a holy task we are performing, and it must not fail. We should think about how we can get Korgunard to safty, should we be overmatched again. I think you might have the best chance."
--
Barega was nearly spent, and happy enough to sleep through the first two watches. He rose when Ala'a silently woke him in the dark of early morning, every part of his body aching, but feeling much further from death.
Barega woke Valsavis, and the two sat quietly, watching and listening. Barega faced away from the cooling coals of their fire, passing the time in meditation (i.e. preparing spells), repairing his spears, and speaking quietly with Valsavis.
"Myself and the elf, I understand. But you and the giant, you are brave men, to enter the Lion's den without a ready means of escape."
[...?]
As the sky lightened in the east, Barega again extracted a rather insufficient amount of moisture from the morning air, in an attempt to replenish the water supply in the barrel (a Create Water for the day.).
2. Barega considered himself to have a hardy and resilient mind, but the strength of the vision was overwhelming.
knowledge(geography) to see if he knows anything about this this tower, or its location?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
"Yes, good," Barega agreed with Ala'a, "we shall travel off the road. I will look ahead."
He looked hard at them, as if thinking something over, and coming to a decision. "It is difficult to speak, when ones mouth is a beak. Is there one of you who will open your mind to me now, and I will see if we can communicate through the Way?"
Somebody correct me if any of this is not right, I haven't used PF psionics before. Barega will Mindlink someone for 1 PP, i guess it lasts 50 minutes. He'll turn into the bird and circle once, then fly west for that time, reporting what he sees (and suggesting a route, etc) through the mindlink. He's looking for the Templar, and any other threats or points of interest (such as a large black tower). After the mindlink expires, I guess he'll fly around some more. If he sees anything that looks serious he will fly back and I guess if there;s still time on the wild shape, initiate a second mindlink (that will leave me out of PP and without psionic focus), report, and fly around more scouting. If he's out of time then he'll just change back and report, and save the 1 PP for later.
Yeah, I'm just getting back into the swing of things and I don't think I'll have the time to catch up and get a well-informed post up this round. You'd be better off botting Valsavis and I'll get back into things on the next go-round. I'd be happy to write up some sort of story, but Valsavis certainly wouldn't be the one to break the ice, it's just not in his character.
Just a reminder, from tonight I'll be out of contact until next Sunday.
Actually i posted something on wednesday, after Gbaji, asking about whether i found out something about Korgunard or not. Seems that post has vanished?
Hai, hai! I´ll sit with you, long-legged firedancer.
Lalai answered Ala´a, but helped with the kanks first. Or at least tried to, she was very unfamiliar with animals, as with many other day to day things too. She seemed surprised though when Alaá immediately fell asleep and was happy about Gbaji searching for conversation.
Korgunards mind seems different now and works strange. I could not see what i normaly can see when i try to look at the minds and energy of others. Something....changes there. So much energy it nearly blinded me. I lost track of time. It was like a mix of magic and the way i have never seen before, but i could not pierce it.
Her face grew a bit distant as if she remembered weird things.
What did i miss? Seems you had exciting times while i was meditating? Anyway we all are still alive, that can only mean i´m with the right people. She smiled at Gbaji, very satisfied.
You´re the first half-giant i get to know. So tall and strong. Was your father a giant or your mother? How did they meet?
Uh should we store Korgunard somewhere again? I mean if we need to leave hastily, wouldn´t it be good we can transport him?
Lalai slept little that night, not needing much rest after her long meditation.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next morning she broke fast with the others and joined the general preparations, looking for Korgunard and help loading the wagon, when suddenly the vision came over everyone.
Seing the others disoriented too:
You experienced that too? What did you see or hear? We should exchange our experience!
She thought hard about what she just saw there. Did she know of any connections? Recognize anything? Perhaps the energy patterns?
Lalali moved over the sand with ease, as if taking a stroll. The sight of the sandstorm worried her though.
What should we do? I was always able to avoid sandstorms and get into safe terrain so far. Perhaps build a tent or something? Barega, do you know what to do?
M Halfling Druid 5
1. The mangy vulture had been flying for hours, and was growing tired. He was approaching his destination, though -- a few hapless travelers caught out in the sand wastes, their kanks straining to drag a covered wagon through the deep sands. It might have been humorous, if not for the slight darkening of the horizon and the howling in his ears. The wind was picking up.
The creature circled the group once, and then landed near the wagon. Barega wearily emerged from the bundle of feathers.
"I caught no sight of the templar's party. Their tracks headed east, across the road and perhaps toward the mountains. But I did not have time to follow them to be sure."
"I do not like the feel of the wind today. Sometimes, the wind, he has a strange sense of humor. Hopefully it will pass." The small's face man did not look particularly optimistic.
Barega watched the kanks struggle through the sand. "I should have thought of this, it will be slow going through the wastes. When I meditate tomorrow morning, I will see if the spirits of the wastes will help them some -- we may be able to speed our progress."
(I'll take some Feather Steps tomorrow morning for the kanks. They last just 50 minutes each, but I guess it would be better than nothing.)
2.
Barega looked to the horizon. "And here he comes. He will test his faithful at the worst of times."
survival check: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16 .......awesome.
To Lalali-re's question, Barega shrugged. "It is difficult. It is not good, to be out in the wind. Perhaps we can fit into this wagon, tie the flaps down, and use these leathers to try to seal the gaps. But I worry for the animals. I don't know if we could secure a tent around them well enough that it would not just blow away."
Just some brainstorming, maybe Barega would have some idea whether any of these would work.
- is there any exposed stone or rock anywhere around? I can stone shape up some shelter. But, I didn't think there was anything but sand anywhere, from the description. I can use eagle eye to look around for some, if that helps.
- can we put the kanks' heads into the empty barrel or something, so that they don't suffocate?
- i think at least we can put scarves over our noses/mouths, to help keep sand out of there
- would it help to lower the wagon onto the sands or something?
- maybe i could summon something to burrow a hole for us, but it's just 30 seconds worth of burrowing. I don't know how much that would help.
- maybe barega could sit out with the kanks, try to keep them from running away.
- if the wagon takes some damage in the storm, we have a few guys with mending
Gazing across the dunes, Ala'a thought back to the last time she'd crossed the wastes on the way to Tyr. She'd been coming the other direction, pursued by a gang of half-breed cutthroats Havel had set on her as he tried to collect on her brother's debt. She'd run the bunch of them into a dead-end canyon in the hills where she'd spied a silkwyrm den. The rest of the trek had been rather leisurely.
"We can head due west until we reach the hills, then follow them southwest to Tyr's valley. The less time we spend among the dunes the better - push the kanks, but not too hard. If one breaks a leg we'll have to carry Korgunard ourselves," she said, heading into the sand at a steady lope.
~~~~0~~0~~~~~
The sand dancing a cross-step across the top of the dunes was the first sign. The low whistle, like a whisper across the top of a bottle, the next and Ala'a needed no more after that.

"A storm is coming. Quick, unharness the kanks and let them burrow," she said, running to the top of the nearest dune for a clearer view. Seeing the haze on the horizon, she pointed. Hearing Barega's suggestion she shook her head."The winds will flip the wagon if they can get under it. Go ahead and tip it over and put Korgunard on this side. We can use the canvas from our tents to create a shelter to keep the worst of the sand out of our lungs."

Valsavis paused in thought as the transforming cannibal gave his report, "Do we know of any landmarks or villages in the direction they're heading? A hidden outpost, perhaps?" He thinks for a moment.

Kn. Geography: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Since Valsavis just traveled this route when he was summoned to Urik, I'll assume it's still fresh in his mind.

"Maybe they're planning on skirting the southern edge of the Dragon's Bowl to head north to Raam or catch the Nibenese Road south to Nibenay? I don't really care either way, just as long as they're off of our trail." He said with a flat tone.

He agreed with Ala'a's suggestion that they should head due west into the dunes. After securing his gear, he trotted after her, quickening his pace to match her long strides.

2

Valsavis' stomach dropped as he noticed the dark mass looming on the horizon, "Aye, a sandstorm. We used to have them in Salt View during the dry months of High Sun. The storms raging from the Meres were especially wicked, known to rend the flesh from a man's bones if they were unlucky enough to be caught out in the open. Whatever our plan, be sure to cover up any exposed flesh." He said as he began wrapping himself in whatever loose cloth he could find. He jogged over to help Gbaji turn over the cart, and began securing down whatever loose gear he could manage in the time they had before the storm arrived.

Valsavis squinted through the haze at their path forward, and his eyes went wide as the swirling sands parted to reveal mounted assailants, heading their way with haste and purpose.

Valsavis waited until their attackers were in range before bellowing a cry of fury hoping to dampen their will to fight before the raiders were upon the them. Retreating, he drew his blades and waved to the others to take cover behind the wagon.

Lalali, I think that power only affects a total of 250 lbs of targets, not X number of targets each weighing up to 250 lbs. So you could probably only toss the Halfling and one other (I vote the creepy looking guy in the back).

Mh i read that a bit different. I´ll just let it to GM rule. Halflings are said to be ~25-30lbs though. In the hot and harsh climate of Athas, everyone is pretty skinny too probably. After all, you´re sweating most of the time!

I also read it as 250 lbs max. Don't forget that NPC also have armor, weapons, etc. and they are on top of kanks. I'm not saying that you have to lift the kank but there could be some difficulty if they have their feet in the stirrups.

Armed riders appearing out of the dust were seldom a good sign in the desert - armed riders wearing identical black hoods even less so, Ala'a thought as she drew her sword.

Resisting the impulse to run ahead and try to flank the attackers, she forced her quivering muscles to hold still and wait for their charge. She whispered the words of a familiar prayer, her fingers flexing as she prepared to spread a sheet of flames as soon as they charged.

Ala'a will ready an action to cast burning hands when the raiders approach within range. She'll try to catch more than one of the raiders in the area of effect and will cast defensively if necessary.

Barega did not like the these riders. The large greasy man in the back, in particular, had the look of the glutton who robs the rest of his community to satiate himself -- an unholy perversion in these Red Times.

He took a few steps back behind the half-giant, and then called loudly to the Flame who was the cousin of the Wind. The flame answered, and a man-sized ball of flame burst into being near the villain in the back, singeing him.

At the sight of the man's spell, Barega lost it. He began shouting in his native tongue. (Lalali-re noted that he was essentially cursing out the fat man and damning the halfling to an afterlife of eternal thirst and starvation for his betrayal of Athas.)

He took a step back to S14 and directed the ball of fire toward the fat man again (flaming sphere r2, reflex 17 negates: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 3) = 6). I'll wait for Ala'a to post before recapping.

This is where going two turns at a time helps. Otherwise, we are taking days for 1 round of combat (no good).

@Lalali: we need to talk about that energy missile power. It's way too powerful for a 2nd level power (nothing compares in power even for a 3rd level spells). It's got good range, selective energy type, selective area of effect (no friendly fire), good damage, no to hit, etc. Please suggest ways to nerf that thing or I will. And please don't take this personally. I have already applied my 'heavy hand' with Valsavis and we eventually came (at least I did) to the conclusion that it was for the improvement of the story/game. I'm slow to catch on but I eventually figure out what's 'out of whack'.

Questions?

Sorry, busy day at work Friday and on the road today. I should be able to post tonight, but it will be several hours.

Gbaji posted this on the 10th so I'm assuming he'll be back with us tomorrow.

Yeah, but to me that meant Sunday the 12th.

Would that have been 'this Sunday'?

I always have this issue with 'this' and 'next' Sunday.

Oh well, let's hope he joins us on the 19th then.

No problem; I'll recap tomorrow.

Sorry for the delay. Had a couple of days with limited time and nothing but my phone.

First, a question: Judging from the map, it looks like Ala'a should have received an attack of opportunity against either the raider that charged Valsavis or the one that charged Gbaji. You didn't give us any AoOs against the thri-kreen, either, so is that something we just aren't messing with? Just wondering for future reference.

Ala'a grimaced as the defiler twisted the land's energy into sickly flames that corrupted, instead of cleansed. Feinting high, she tumbled past the mounted raider in front of her but the human moved faster than she thought he would, his black blade catching her as she raced past to engage the tainted sorcerer.

The defiler seemed to surprised to see her close the gap so swiftly, and she grinned as she circled him, Ash-Caller ready to strike if he attempted another spell.

Use Acrobatics to tumble past the raider I'm engaged with, then move west to G13 and ready an action to attack the defiler if he tries to cast a spell or move away.

Acrobatics to avoid AoO: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 Probable fail, so I assume I get hit with an AoO.

For reference, Ala'a is +11 to hit, 1d8+6/18-20 damage if the defiler ends up provoking.

No problem; everyone has their busy times.

The thri-kreen fight was special so I didn't mess with a lot of things but I do play with AoOs so I'll 'retcon' the ones for Ala'a and Barega.

PS: as you've done in the past, please let me know if I misinterpret or plain screw up your intentions and/or rules and I'll fix things things up as needed. I'm here to learn and to make this story worth while for everyone.

Game on!

rolls:

FROM ROUND 1 (fixing DM screw up)
Barega AoO on raider 5
to hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12, miss
Ala'a AoO on raider 2
to hit: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31, critical?
to hit: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19, yes
damage: 2d8 + 12 ⇒ (1, 4) + 12 = 17
so raider 2 is at 'critical wounds'
ROUND 2
LALALI ENERGY MISSILE
ref save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20, yes
ref save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14, miss and dead
ref save: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 8 - 2 = 16, miss and dead
ref save: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 - 2 = 21, yes
ref save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15, miss and dead
BAREGA STEP BACK AND FLAMING SPHERE ON DEFILER
ref save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14, miss
VALSAVIS HIT RAIDER 4 FOR 6HP
ALA'A PROVOKES AoO from raider P11 (I had you go north to avoid a second AoO, and had to use 2 move actions to get to G13 so no 'ready an action')
raider to hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7, miss
GBAJI ATTACKS RAIDER 1
to hit: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17, miss
DEFILER MOVES BACK AND FIREBALL
damage DC 16: 6d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 3, 1, 2) = 10
Barega ref save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Gbaji ref save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Lalali ref save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Valsavis ref save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
RAIDER 1 ON GBAJI
to hit: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17, miss
RAIDER 4 WITHDRAWS FROM VALSAVIS TO LALALI
HALFLING BOW ON ALA'A
to hit: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14, miss

Female Elf Slayer 1 / Oracle 4

Ala'a spared a glance toward her companions as the nascent fireball streaked toward them, but this one exploded with little power, doing little more than singeing them. Lalali looked to be in bad shape but the others had killed several of the raiders and were in a better position to help.

She cursed as the halfling hunter fired an arrow into the sand at he feat. Circling around to the south, she put the fat defiler between her and any further arrows. Weaving her sword in a distracting pattern, she kept her eyes on the mage's hands - if he made a move to cast another spell, she'd bury her blade in his guts.

Move around to D12 and ready an action to attack the defiler if he moves or casts a spell. I'd also be in position for an Attack of Opportunity if he tries to move more than 5 feet or casts a spell without casting defensively.

Also - my reason for delaying rather than attacking now is to try to cause damage while he's casting and force a Concentration check.

No, next Sunday meant the 19th. Maybe a different in the way these things are expressed across the Atlantic, but "next Sunday" isn't necessarily the next Sunday. I posted I would be gone for a week or so, not two days, a few days prior to that. I'm back and in the process of catching up.

M Halfling Druid 5

Barega's lip twitched at the fear on the fat man's face as Ala'a charged toward him. He advanced slowly, eyes on the defiler instead of the fight going on around him. Barega pointed, and the ball of flame ploughed into the man again, singeing him and his kank. The worried beast strained at its harness.

Then as the small hunter yelled out more strange sounds, the flame began to emit a thick, oily smoke which quickly obscured the area. In fact, the only things that could be easily seen through the smoke were the ball of fire and the kank rider, who was glowing with cold-burning flames of his own.

flaming sphere r3/5 damage:: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6

Step to R15.
Try to hit the defiler with the flaming sphere again as a move action.
Cast fog cloud centered on (9.5,e.5), so that it obscures Ala'a, the defiler, the halfling archer. I'm hoping the poor visibility will slow then if they try to run away, in addition to blocking line of sight. The defiler doesn't have concealment because of the faerie fire. Also, not sure, but I think maybe Ala'a can see through fog anyway?

Finding himself momentarily unthreatened, the telepath woman's cries for help finally registered to Valsavis. He wasted no time in circling around the man assailing her and when an opening presented itself, he plunged his blade into the man's soft exposed midsection.

mwk obsidian bard’s friend: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 + Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9 15 damage

The man went rigid and slid off of the bard's friend, tumbling to the sands to bleed out, a dark pool swiftly spreading from his grievous wound. Wiping the gore off of his blade onto his leggings, Valsavis grinned at Lalali, "Sorry I couldnt've seen to him earlier, I was busy." He spun on the last remaining raider and gave him a hard look, his eyes as cold and still as death itself.

Free demoralize: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (13) + 18 = 31

Move to R7, kill the raider threatening Lalali at S7, demoralize the raider at Q13.

Ahhh! Lalali moaned in pain.
Get him off! Heavily bleeding from the gash on her forehead she took astep back away from the raider U8, took one of her healing fruits and ate it.
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Mmmrppfhhmmmhmmmjam, what a relief!
She cast a thankfull look to Valsavis, nodding to him.

Nice website maintenance ate my posts. Several of them.
