Narumek:

As far as I understand the spell solid notes can't hover, they have to be positioned somewhere - e.g. hanging at a wall. Your armour class is updated now then, not after the fight.

Ha! how unlucky!

"I must then disclose in all honesty. Lord Aramais has been too fee with his gifts, and this has been too free with gifts and has spurned a rival who seeks to strike back at him for doing so. I don't know who is to blame, but I have my suspicions. Of the plot on how the revenge will be exacted, well I have that most clear. An assassin will strike at the person carrying these gifts... I believe you may be placed at enormous risk by simply doing the right and decent thing and carrying such tokens in an efficient and proper manner."

"All is not lost though, I believe I have a basic ruse that may well trick them. I don't know if I should do this, but I feel a little braver with you around - you should bring the gifts to my tent first. It would appear that I was the recipient of such gestures and tokens from a noble suitor, something sure to have the growing need for revenge fade. Perhaps I could have my errand boy then run them on from my tent and no one would be the wiser."

"For this to work properly it must be a secret shared only between us two, should Lord Aramais become aware of such a horrible plot then it might affect his chances at joust, and in that case the true love between him and the Countess might be at risk... no he must't know, he must continue his fine form. This is the tough work that decent and righteous friends must do behind the stage in order to aid their allies ascent to nobility... it falls to us. You and I..."

She trails off the last as though it hints at something more significant.

TL;DR - Bring the gifts to Victoria, she will ensure they get on safely and avoid 'the assassin'.

4th Run @ Narumek

Solaric finishes his third attempt at dislodging the dark knight without success!

"Narumek, I commend you for your skill on horse with lance! Who are you brave knight? Where do you come from? I hope that some day, you will be able to put your skill to use against the evil that threatens our fine country!"

Solaric aims his lance and spurs on his faithful steed, Dart for another attempt.

I...I'm flabbergasted my lady, how can I ever thank you for your fair and sound warning?! We will follow your plan exactly as you sketched it, just tell me where your tent is and I will come to you once my master has given me the next "special present".

5th Run at Narumek

Victoria confides in him the location of the tent, and with a warning somewhere between concern and a vague attraction she bids him farewell.

She reserves her sickly sweet smug look for her companions. "Here's hoping we start to see Aramais gifts arriving. Be alert for treachery... his of course, not mine, I'd never do that to a companion."

Male Dwarf 6 Fighter (Tower Shield)

Solaric casts guidance upon himself and spurs on Dart.

"It is time to end this contest, Narumek!"

Aiming his lance at Narumek, the elf charges onward and attempts to dismount the knight!

Lance 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

The Inheritor shines her blessing down upon him as the lance shatters leaving Solaric still in the saddle!

"Nice hit, Narumek! Nice job indeed!"

Zyren:
I am not inclined to change the rules once combat begins, but perhaps we should consider jousting rules where 1 point is granted for a hit, 2 points for a critical hit (hitting the opponent's head), and 3 points, enough for a win, is granted if you dismount your opponent. However, you could earn those three points without dismounting your opponent, but by simply hitting your opponent. I saw a similar system used in the jousting match in the movie a Knight's Tale. Let me know what you think.

8th Run

Patience, Solaric! Hang in there and the Inheritor will see you through!

Solaric tilts forward and charges the dark knight once again.

Lance 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Hellknight 4, Bard 2

Narumek turns his horse, tossing his broken lance away. Retrieving another he charges again but the elusive elf escapes again.

1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Venture Captain since December 2014

Hmm? Another close call! I do hope I can encourage this dark knight to serve the inheritor! We could certainly use his skill on the batlefield.

Solaric pats down dart and rest for a moment before making his next attempt.

Finally after a quick rest, he tilts forward and charges forth with his lance.

9th Run

Damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Hellknight 4, Bard 2

Narumek brings his horse around and kicks his heels hard into its flanks. They charge forward...

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

But his lance goes wide again. Narumek turns and prepares to ride again, waiting for the judges' signal.

A trumpet blazons signaling that the fight between two so valiant knights will be decided by divine favour. The crowd falls silent as one of the judges steps out into the jousting area and exclaims

Rarely have we witnessed a battle of such intensity, rarely have we seen two knights so proficient with the reins, and rarely have we been spectators at such a titanic joust. Since this fight cannot be won by the means mortal men possess, we will decide this contest by asking for Desna's judgment.

Turning to Narumek and Solaric he adds

Since Sir Zekkaran is an honourable and well-known citizen of Karcau it is his right to choose which side of the holy coin of Desna he prefers, either the Butterfly or the Twinkling Star.

He raises his right hand and shows a large gold coin sparkling in the sun.

Hellknight 4, Bard 2

A COIN!? Narumek calls, dismounting and walking towards the judge. A coin is no way to end a fight! This is what I think of your coin! he says, raising his lance and breaking it over his knee. Tossing the broken halves of his lance on the ground before the judges' feet, he remounts and spins his steed around.
He points a clawed finger at Solaric We will meet again, little elf!
He rears his horse on its hind legs and rides off before the coin has been flipped.

"If my fate is to be determined by the gods, then I will trust that the Inheritor's will shall be done. Go ahead and let the results of this joust be determined with the coin. My faith shall not waver! At this time, I will call the Twinkling Star! However, let it be known that regardless of the results, I will always consider Narumek to be a brave and worthy foe!"

Male Dwarf 6 Fighter (Tower Shield)

"The elf even manages to make a battle take an eterninty! Hahahahaha!" Harl bellows to his comrades.

The judge seems perplexed and the coin nearly falls off his hand - from the stands you hear many-voiced Aaaahs, but especially Oooohs and Awwwws...

The judge harrumphes and proclaims - with a bit of anger in his voice

Sir Solaric Zekkaran is declared the winner of this fight! Narumek the Unforgiving is disqualified and he is not going to take part in the fight for the 4th place. Instead he is automatically placed 4th in the joust!

The final is held in 30 minuted between Sir Solarik Zekkaran and Sir Aramis de Voisseur!

Venture Captain since December 2014

At the proclamation of his win, Solaric raises both hands in triumph. "Iomedae be praised!"

The priest then draws forth his sword, and with both hands aims it downward whereupon he kneels and says a prayer of thanks.

"Blessed Inheritor, I give you thanks for guiding me this day and leading me on the path you have laid before me. I thank you for giving me the strength and the heart that I may follow your will until the end! May it always be so!"

Returning to his feet, Solaric waves to the cheering crowd. As he departs the grounds, he asks the judge, "Why was Narumek disqualified, was it because of his hasty departure in anger?"

Before returning to his tent, Solaric addresses the love of his life, the Countess Livgrace.

"My dear Countess Livgrace, the Inheritor willing, I shall win this tournament for you!"

Solaric smiles and bows deeply before her highness.

On his return to the tent, he addresses his friend Harl if he is to be found nearby.

"We are nearly there. Now I must face Aramis myself. Let us use this opportunity to see if he attempts any treachery. He has not had an opponent face him with all of his wits yet! Let me see if I can at least accomplish that in the next hour."

Solaric retires to tend to his faithful horse and if time permits, rest.

The judge nods as you question him

Yes, he has dishonoured our traditions and the goddess Desna...he is lucky not to be expelled from the whole tournament.

----at the tents

About ten minutes before the duel between Solaric and Aramis is about to start, the errand boy reaches Vicky's tent.

Here...I was given this pendant of Iomedae to bring it to Sir Zekkaran and tell him it was a gift of Tanor Veredan. I'm not sure if it's right to show it to you, but I didn#t want to make any mistakes!

"Gentlemen, I present to you the treacherous gift from that snake out there. Whilst it is commendable Solaric maintains a high standard, it is clear his competitor feels no such restraint."

"My good fellow Johenric, let us divine the nastiness of this item."

Ensuring she handles the object as little as possible, Victoria begins her examination of the 'Gift'.

Solaric, I couldn't find anything... Did you win your joust? I heard cheering! Flofer says, returning to the top box.
Ooh, nice necklace, Miss Victoria, it looks just like Solarics!

Kirk puts his hand on Solaric's shoulder, "Drop that idiotic noble into the mud so all can see his imperfection," Kirk says quietly, giving his partner an encouraging nod.

The item you hold in your hands is an "Amulet of Bad Fortune +2".

Which grants the wearer a luck "bonus" of -2 to all attack rolls and saving throws. It is also cursed and once put on cannot be put off without a curse breaking spell.

It's a rare and pretty costly thing and you now get a feeling of how much Aramis must hate Solaric and/or desire the countess...

Worth about 10k gp.

"Well, I will do my best to play the part, your Grace. Although, if I am anything like how I jousted against Narumek, I may not need to pretend that I am clumsy!"

Your chat is interrupted by the barkers' calls: it's time for the grand final of the jousting contest! Well, you wouldn't have needed that information since the crowd is cheering so loudly, you already felt the big moment had come.

On the left side of the lane Aramis is already waiting in the saddle of his black steed, Paragon. He wears his shiny fullplate with his family crest on the back and grins as you leave the tent.

Venture Captain since December 2014

Solaric does his best to play up to Aramis that he is under the influence of the cursed token. First he pretends to have trouble getting on his faithful steed, Dart. Secondly he will drop his lance and ask for his squire to pick it up. Thirdly, he will wobble while in his Saddle. Finally he will look around for Tanor Veredan and call out to him. "Thank you for the pendant! I will ride onward in the name of the Inheritor."

Aramis wrote:

"The outcome of this joust I leave in the hands of fate, though I feel compelled to remark that if the outcome is unsuitable we may look to forging a new destiny by our own hands. Once again it seems you and I may be called upon to ensure that true love finds an unimpeded course"

As Armis notices Solaric's problems, he laughs out loud and shouts to the crowd
