DMRaven's The Long Vigil (Inactive)

Game Master DMRaven

The warriors of Vigil have been a beacon for good since the Shining Crusade. Standing against the orc hordes of Belkzen, undead swarms from Gallowspire and the demonic armies of the Worldwound, they are never short of threats to face and always in need of bodies for the fray. The elite Knights of Ozem look for only the most promising of Lastwall's recruits to take into their halls. Do you have what it takes?

Day 14
Characters: Kassara, Eilidh

Silverius slowly moves both hands behind his back as the teenager mumbles out a quick reply before fleeing the room. His eyes widen slightly, his lips parting to respond as he watches the door swing open and back, latching shut quickly. He stands for a few moments, silent, while the pentarchos shakes his head and glares at him.

"Nice job making the little girl upset like that."

His frown deepens and the wrinkles in his worn face seem to deepen with it. Turning toward the soldier, he shakes his head. "I've never understood that age, Cyricus."

"Well, your own daughter didn't stick around very long. Looks like you make a habit of making little scrubs flee to the Bonewatch."

The inspector's pacing continues for a moment and the two stand in silence. He stops, staring at the gruesome scene in the prison. "Even Oathless criminals have those who care for them. I am simply not one of them."

"That wouldn't take a scholar to realize."

"Yes.." He turns, walking to the door. "You will take care of this mess, Cyricus?"

"Hmn. Yes. Not the first time you leave me to clean up in your wake, Inspector."

"I know, dear friend. I know. Time is integral. You realize the Watcher-Lord's tasks are more important than this..I just wanted to see if it was related to the...situation on hand."

"It doesn't look like it. No ways an orc got to do with this one."

"Apparently." The inspector extends one gloved hand toward the soldier, who takes it and shakes it once.

"Good luck, Inspector."

"Good luck, Pentarchos."

Damnit, posted that quickly and forgot Kassie was there.

The pentarchos turns to Kassara, shrugging. "He's a busy man. However, he didn't say anything about not letting you two investigate the issue. His daughter's in the Bonewatch..I'm sure he meant well enough with that question."

Walking to the ash and squatting down, he shakes his head. "I have some boxes if you want to pack this stuff up. You'll probably want to see a scribe or something to figure out more."

Standing up, he smiles at Kassara. "You might want to investigate the urchin who called all my guards away too. It could be a coincidence or...who knows."

Day 14
On a second thought, not going to count Grimold's visit with his mother as a downtime action unless you spend a substantial amount of time there. Those actions are mostly for things that take 4-5 hour blocks of time.
Characters: Grimold

Cohort One Dormitory

"Hah! He beat me plenty of times in class today. He is right though..it seems everything here is a test. Whether its sneaking into another cohort's room to mess with their notes and not get caught to whether you can make friends with your own cohort while soundly beating them all in one on one combat." Vorin extends his hand, smiling.

"Vorin, by the way. Vorin Mosilde. My dad's a Knight. So, how'd you get into the scrubs at such a late time?"

Oathless Apartment Buildings

Milena follows after him, on his heels, swinging a straw doll missing one arm with hair made of dirty yarn. One eye hanging slightly askew. The two siblings find their mother in her wicker chair at her loom, wiping at her face while weaving lengths of wool to sell for the upcoming winter. At their entrance, she looks up and her eyes widen, a smile covering her face.

"Rolando. I...wasn't sure you'd be allowed to come back by." She stands up and moves to him, hugging him tight before stepping back, her hands on his shoulders. He's already her height and will likely be much taller, possibly taller than his father.

"Are you alright? Are you hurt? Do you need something to eat?"

Dayh 14
Characters: Eilidh

Ardis grins when he sees Allie. "Allie! I've been looking for you, I wanted to ask you a couple of questions..you seem a lot better at all the religious doctrine stuff than I was working on some class-work about Aroden.."

He trails off, oblivious to Eilidh's distress, instead asking questions about Aroden's holy texts and former worship in Taldor.

Check: 1d20 ⇒ 1 Looks like Grimold doesn't catch that there was a class today. He's going to get himself in trouble if he keeps missing cues like that.

Grimold accepts Vorin's extended hand. "Grimold. It was a... favor from the Tilernos family." He smiles tensely, trying to hide his distaste for the words. "I did not realize they encouraged such low conduct of their future knights," he says with a trace of irony.

Oathless Apartments

Seeing his mother, Rolando's throat tightens even more. He swallows to clear it as she embraces him. I'm in for it this time. She must have been too worried to be angry. "I'm...I'm fine, Mama." His stomach growls, reminding him that he hasn't eaten. "We are supposed to have dinner at five bells, but it would be nice to have some real food before I have to choke down their castle slop." He gives her a forced smile and swallows again, feeling guilty. His gaze drops to the floor as he tries to make an apology. "I'm sorry I made you worry." How much did they tell her? Does she know about Felipe? Frowning, he forces himself to look back up and meet her eyes. "What...what did they tell you?"

As she flops down on Ardis's bed and rests her chin on her hands, Eilidh struggles to put aside the day's experiences. Instead, she struggles to shift her thoughts to Aroden. "W-well, Aroden. M-most of the followers switched to Iomedae, b-but there are still a f-few out there. A l-lot of them f-fake the magic." She stops for a minute, struggling to keep her composure, and then stands up. "I-I'm sorry, I c-can't do th-this right now." Without another word, she flees, instead heading out to the practice arena and savagely pummeling a dummy for a few hours.

Having nearly been out the door when Vorin kept up the conversation, Daen doubled back and listened to the new recruit's comments. "If you want to stay on my good side, don't start anything with me. I don't go out of my way to find conflict, I've got plenty enough already."

Concerning the conduct of the knights, Daen also speaks up. He'd had enough of pompous windbags already this week, and he wasn't about to let another on inflate right in front of him. "I'm not sure you know this, being far from the front. But Lastwall is at war. We have Orcs, Demons, and Undead potentially at every side. It's only due to the efforts of generations of the Knights that this town even exists. So back off on any moral high ground you think you have to start. That won't win you friends here."

"What does your family do? He held up a hand again to prevent interruption. "It doesn't matter. If I showed up and started criticizing how they do what they do in the first five minutes, what would you think of me?"

"Secondly, clandestine operations are part of war. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying or a fool. Even if we don't employ them, we should expect them and just about anything else that might come our way. It would make sense in training to deal with them as well. How they've dealt with them has brought success to generations of knights that protect our way to live. Once you've successfully completed several dangerous missions and won their respect, then you can start talking about what you approve of and don't approve of. Until then, keep your head down and focus on what is going to actually make you successful here."

"I'd say good luck to you if I believed it would help... And with that he headed resolutely out the door. "I'm going training, anyone who wants to come should come."

Training grounds

After training with whomever was there for a little while, Ellie came out to do some training as well. Seeing she was there he approached her. "Good afternoon Ellie. Ardis was looking for you."

"Y-yes, I s-saw him. He w-wanted...he wanted my help w-with some s-studying. I w-wasn't in the...I couldn't. Not tonight." She took a place near Daen, launching a couple of half-hearted swings at a nearby dummy before stopping. "They're d-dead, you know. The p-prisoners we gave to the g-guard. The l-letter I got from my m-mother last night, it said one of them w-was to be given a choice, and I w-went to give him the g-good news, but he wasn't there, and they w-were dead. The i-inspector d-didn't seem as if he c-cared at all. There was b-blood everywhere."

She picks up a training blade and crashes it against the dummy's head as hard as she can, dropping it as vibrations numb her hand. "D-did you realize it w-would be like this? I d-didn't. I had s-such high hopes for the Knights..."

As Daen leaves, Grimold's face twists through a number of contortions. Confusion, disbelief, consternation, and finally indignant anger. Moral high ground? He tries to reconcile this new revelation about the knights with the image of Daen pointing a sword at his throat, Felipe dead in the alley and Jorge bleeding out next to him. They cut us down in the street for making our way the only way we can because they give us no other choice, but they do the same and worse and claim it is right because it protects their way of life? His blood begins to boil as his brain grapples with the hypocrisy. Am I truly here to be reformed? Or do they just mean to use me for different ends?

With renewed purpose, he flees from the Bonewatch, fuming. It it not me who is lost upon the road, but the whole damn road that is lost! May the orcs take this castle, the undead claim their lives, and the demons feast upon their souls!

Kassie turns for a moment as Allie runs from the door, just about to follow, when the Pentarchos stops her. "That's all very well," she replies "but he didn't have to treat her like that. I suppose I should take some of,... the remains, Allie'll want to find out what happens when she's feeling better... Someone called your men away? What did he look like? Do you know his name?"

Day 14
Characters: Allie

As Ardis flops on the bed next to her, he smiles. He blinks as she stands up, the smile vanishing quickly. ”Wait-wh-what?” He sits up as Eilidh runs out of the room, rubbing his neck and frowning.

Characters: Daen, Eilidh

As Daen and Grimold exchange words, Vorin safely stays quiet. He follows after the magus when he leaves, but doesn't say a word for several minutes. The training arena comes into view and Vorin nudges Daen slightly with an elbow. ”He'll come to understand, if he stays, you know. Some people have silly, romantic notions about the Knights of Ozem. Others realize that they do a duty, and do it better, than the regular soldiers..all while avoiding most of the corruption that plagues Mendev's crusaders.”

He waves to Eilidh as Daen greets her. ”Our cohort practices more than the o—oh..” He trails off as she starts to talk, retreating a half step toward a different dummy and foregoing weapons, warming up with unarmed combat moves learned from Fisk.

”I think we met the survivor..upstairs. He didn't seem like he knew..that or its why he was so angry.”

Characters: Grimold

Down at the docks, the chance to answer a question seems to rise the woman Grimold was raised by from tears to an all-too familiar scowl. ”Enough. Rolando, I told you those friends were bad news! I told you that there was no quick way out, that it wasn't a good idea...I don't care if we needed the money!” She rounds on him, cuffing him in the b ack of the head.

”Robbing an unarmed man in the street? While armed with a weapon? While Oathless?! Of course you were arrested! You're an idiot, Rolando and you shame your father.” She pauses, glowering at him, knowing the words would hurt.

”But this...this is different. The Knights of Ozem? They are warriors only, Rolando. You are not a warrior, you are a minstrel, like your Papa! You have a heart for music, not of iron...this life, it is not for you. You must tell them no and find a way out of this situation you find yourself in. I do not care how much that Tilernos family offers as a stipend.”

Characters: Kassara

A sad smile crosses the man's face and he looks to the door. ”You speak with anger where you do not need to. That man is focused. He cares little for social pleasantries. I'd not bother to scold him, for it would do no good. He is a provider for Vigil—a provider of answers. No noble, him. Just a man who took the shield-mark to do his best by the city. He shows no love for criminals, for those are who he hunts—and yet, do not begrudge him his faults. He has stood alone before a mob of angry men for a young woman accused of necromancy—his truth-telling ways knowing she was innocent.”

The soldier leads Kassara out of the room and into the second room, revealing a small office. He takes a wooden box down from a shelf, emptying out a few items, before handing it to her. ”You may take the ash, if you wish. I cannot let you have the remains..they may yet be claimed by the families. You do not have an official capacity to request they be withheld for investigation.”
Contacts or use of fame/prestige may be able to fix this if you're creative.

”I caught no name. If you come back tomorrow, you can speak to one of the guard's who went to investigate. I took it was a young child, maybe eight years old? It seems someone had started a fire near the Golden Dragon and it almost spread to the building. Fortunately, my men contained the issue.”

Somewhat mollified, Kassie thanks the soldier and accepts the box from him, returning to the blood-splatterd room to distastefully gather as much of the ash as she can. Turning, she replies. Thank you for your help. I think I will come back tomorrow. Someone needs to find out what happened here. Even if you think that petty criminals aren't worth the effort, it should be worrying that anyone would be able to do something like this in Vigil's gaols."

With that she leaves the building, letting her emotions loose as she stands tearfully on the street outside. Eventually she gathers herself and looks around, hoping that no-one has noticed her red eyes. Its getting late, but maybe its worth asking at inn before heading back to the barracks. Asking a passer-by for directions, she quickly makes her way to The Golden Dragon.

Assuming its open and not a burnt-out shell:
Nervously glancing around, she steps inside and makes her way to the bar, where she orders an ale and sits watching the customers for a few minutes. When the innkeeper has a few moments she leans forward with a pretty smile.

Assuming there are signs of the fire either outside or inside:

"Looks like you've had an accident," she says "lucky the whole place didn't burn down and maybe take half of Vigil with it. What happened? How did it start?

Eilidh stops hitting her dummy for a moment. "Was he angry. I w-wouldn't have th-thought so, but if h-his friends g-got killed in f-front of him, that'd explain why. I'll n-need to have a t-talk with him t-tonight, if he's around. D-do either of you kn-know where he w-went?" She takes a few more swings, starting to work up a sweat, but barely moving the training dummy. "And, c-come to think of it, have either of y-you h-heard about an extra c-class on archery? I d-don't seem to be c-cut out f-for this kind of f-fighting."

Rolando turns his head aside as if the words were a slap and welling tears sting his eyes. She is right. I am a fool. But what's done is done.

He shakes his head and looks back at her. "Mama, it is the only way. If I say no, they will send me to prison for good this time, to the salt mines. I cannot keep my promise to Papa if I am in prison!" He runs a hand through his hair in frustration, sinking into a chair. He didn't want to have this fight. Hanging his head in his hands, his resolve begins to break.

"You're right, Mama. I'm an idiot. I...we really messed up this time." The tears begin to fall from his eyes, and once they start, there's no stopping them. His voice begins to crack and he starts talking faster, the words just pouring out. "It wasn't supposed to happen like that, we didn't even draw first," he sobs. "The knights drew on us and then...and then..." He pauses, beginning to hyperventilate. He shakes his head, pulling on his hair and his head rolls back, looking past Mama and fixating on the ceiling. "Mama, they ki- Felipe is- he's..." He can't bring himself to say it, especially with Milena in the room. He gulps for air and clenches his jaw, trying to contain his throes of despair. He curls and uncurls his fingers in his lap and his toes in his boots, his legs and arms flexing. He drops his elbows onto the table and holds his head up in his hands again, running both hands repeatedly through his hair.

Daen shrugged a little. "I don't know if he was angry. He seemed a bit full of himself though. I also think he may have been asking if he could go home, but he also wanted to know what time dinner was, so I'm sure you'll be able to find him there." If he were angry, he should be angry at himself for going against the protection he's been enjoying since his birth. He wanted to say that, but he didn't. It wouldn't do any good here.

"As for the archery class, I'm sure they have one. I don't know where it would be, but you should be able to find out if you dedicate enough time to it. Although if I hear anything I'll let you know."

Day 14
Characters: Kassara

The Golden Dragon still stands, without so much as a visible scratch—at least from the street it sits upon. The building itself is squat, two-stories of stone. A row of pillars stretches across the front with a balcony sitting above them for the second floor containing pillars as well. Coiled dragons painted gold spiral around the outside of the pillars. The doorways are made up of red stone while the rest of the building is gray.

Within, it is obviously a more upscale location. The floors are swept clean and contain none of the sawdust present at the Rose Chalice to soak up blood and liquid. The clientele seem to be well off merchants and a few ranked soldiers around circular tables and seated on benches. A wooden staircase goes up to the second floor. The bar keep looks more like a poet than a fat chef or drunken welcher. He wears a tilted red hat in a style from Galt with a buttoned up shirt in the Lastwall style. His mustache and beard are both thin and well-groomed. As Kassara makes her way to the bar and sits, he willingly brings her a drink.

The ale itself is flowery and slightly sweet, smelling strongly of nettles. Kassara's pretty smile obviously has the innkeeper's attention.

Characters: Grimold

His mother shakes her head, tsking and rubbing his back. She wisely chose not to point out the trouble Felipe brought on himself, she had never been a fan of the boy despite his friendship with Rolando. She lets out a sigh, using a kettle of heated water to make some tea and preparing a plate of stew hanging over the fireplace. It was simple fare of lentils, lupin beans and pig—although the affordable parts such as the hoofs, ears and hocks.

”Eat. Sit. Think for awhile. Felipe...made poor decisions and look where it got him. You must do better. You know the law forbids weapons among the Oathless—to draw steel against a Knight of Ozem..even if they drew first, one should only expect what happens first. But it is not polite to speak ill of the dead..we will pray to Pharasma for Felipe's soul and burn some rosemary and willow for him tonight. “

Milena insists Grimold spend some time attending to her, telling her Varisian folktales and entertaining her. Eventually, Rolando's mother pushes him on the shoulder, sending him back to the Bonewatch. ”You do well..and you come home to me intact, Rolando. Do not lose the strings in your heart.”

Characters: Daen, Eilidh

”Full of his own opinions, Daen.” Vorin falls out of his stance, hands at his side as he walks to the weapon rack, reaching down and pulling out an odd weapon with a square guard and a long, dulled, spike on each corner of the guard. It is about the length of a dagger. He tosses it a few times in the air, then, with a shrug, tries figuring out how to use it on a pell.

”If you want to practice archery, I'd look around or ask around at the archery range. There's one behind the Bonewatch behind a few hedge rows, still within the walls of course.”

"Ah, I s-see. I s-suppose you two wouldn't know m-much about archery c-classes, would you? Th-thanks for the help, th-though." Moving away from the training dummies, she takes a look at the weapon rack, but finds nothing there that interests her. She works the dummy for a while and then, tired, heads back to the dormitories to get ready for dinner.

Under his mother's ministrations, Rolando gets control of himself. Wiping his eyes with his sleeve, he nods. "Yes, Mama. Thank you." He eats somberly, trying to pull himself together. The hot stew helps, reminding him of happier times. Sitting near the fire, his damp clothes steam and dry out, providing more comfort. After his stew, he starts to brighten up a little as his sister nags him to tell her a story. At her insistence, he picks her up and sets her on his lap and tells her a tale from the Cosmic Caravan cycle, the one about the joining of the Stranger. "It was a dark night, nearly starless as it often is in the month of Neth. The Caravan had made camp for the night and the logs burned low. All the others had gone to bed, save for the Stargazer who was plotting the next day's course by the light of Cynosure..."

After finishing his story, his mother shoos him out the door. "Don't worry, Mama, I'll be back. I don't know how often I will be able to visit, but they told me I could write to you. And Milena, when I come back, I will bring papa's violin and I will play for you." He ruffles Milena's hair again and gives Mama a kiss on the cheek, starting back toward the Bonewatch.

It wasn't supposed to go that way, he chides himself on the way back. What happened to putting on a strong face for Mama and Milena? You can't keep crying like this, especially at the Bonewatch. You cannot let them see you as weak, as a target. As he trudges back through the gloomy streets, he resolves to do whatever it takes to survive. What would Felipe say if he saw you bawling like a newborn? From now on, no more crying. You will study hard, fight harder, and you will prove to them that Oathless are not the worthless human refuse they treat us as!

That seems like it should have counted for a downtime action, but either way I should still have another one. I'll take that action to go to the library after dinner.

Kassie leans back, clearly comfortable in these surroundings despite the fact that, wearing her slightly dirty leather armour, she does't really fit in with rest of the clientele. Brushing a stray lock of her blonde hair from her eyes, she leans in and takes a sip of the ale, sighing in satisfaction before she looks up at the barkeep with a smile. "Ahhh,.. Its been some time since I've had a decent ale," she says, In the last place I had a drink it was absolute swill! I've had such a day, it's so good to just relax. You know? Haven't had a chance to just sit and talk for an age! You know, I've been in town for some time, but I didn't even know this place was here. I guess its the people I've been spending time with. They're lovely, don't get me wrong, but half of them have never even been in a respectable establishment. I wouldn't have found it even now, except for the shouts this morning. Something about a fire? Well the place seems to have survived anyway. What actually happened?"

quick question:

The inspector, "Inspector Silverius",... would Silverius be his given, or his family name?

Grimold; are you going to the library to study for a class or look for books?

Silverius was his first name, surname unknown.

Day 14
Characters: Kassara

A tilt of the hat and a smile greets Kassara's compliment. The barkeep shakes his head sadly. "Oh, 'tis a terrible thing. Some hooligans set a fire near a wall in the back. Most of the walls are stone, but the roof and framing along the upper story is all wood. Many of the nearby buildings are mostly wood too, so it would not have ended well for this area. I didn't find out until the guard came, shouting about fire and starting a bucket brigade. It seems some child brought them here, I was very appreciative. The poor thing was stick thin! I gave him a meal, some gold and sent him on his way. It does best to reward good deeds well."

He pauses, handing out a drink to another patron. "But worry not! The Golden Dragon fears not competitors nor those who wish it harm. We will stand and continue our expansion, becoming the best place for food in the city!"

Look for books.

Day 14
Characters: Grimold

The Bonewatch's library is surprisingly large for a military organization. Most of it is filled with texts on military tactics, history or various bestiaries on fighting various monsters. It does seem several of the books Daen named are here, although not all of them. Grimold might be able to manage on just what is provided, but will not be able to keep up as well as the other scrubs.

Without full access to the required books, Grimold will take a -4 penalty on study checks. He will only take a -2 penalty if he makes use of the library.

Day 15 -- Week Three, Day One (Moonday)
Characters: All

Fisk's training is, as always, brutal. As Grimold's first introduction to the Knights, it is both inspiring and terrifying. The scrubs start with warmups-simple running, stretches, and athletic abilities. Next starts the typical obstacle courses--testing the group on their climbing, acrobatic and other skills. Finally, comes the actual lessons. Fisk has focused on unarmed combat the last two weeks, but has moved on from that.

He shifts into defensive stances and combat maneuvers, teaching you how to protect against various disarms, trips and other attacks. He practically ignores Rolando until the end, where he beckons the boy forward.

Fisk walks around him, appraising him, before scoffing. "Manon needs to stop taking advice from her little brat and think for herself..a criminal, in the Bonewatch." He shakes his head sadly and moves away.

Elyssa moves up to Grimold and pats him once on the back with a smile. "Don't worry, he's an ass to everyone. The Knights take all kinds and you're not the first. My pa says its a disgrace too, but he's an ass too."

Near the beginning of the last hour of practice, Jalen moves amongst the group and hands out small sips of paper. They read simply: Meet with me, Library tonight when the bells strike nine.

He only hands the scripts to the top nine students, avoiding Grimold.
Strength, climb or acrobatics checks.

Meeting with Jalen does not count as a downtime action. You may still use your time.

Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Tired from a long night spent in nightmarish dreams, Eilidh struggles through Fisk's exercises, barely doing well enough to scrape by. Still, she's happy to be learning something besides unarmed combat.

She's readying herself for another bout with Ardis when Jalen slips her the note, and nods as she reads it before slipping it into her pocket. She turns back to Ardis and nods at him to begin. After class, she apologizes to Ardis. "I-I'm sorry about l-last n-night. I c-couldn't...those p-prisoners w-we took... they're d-dead. I c-couldn't think r-right."

When she's finished talking to Ardis, she makes her way quietly to Grimold, offering a nervous, toothy smile. "H-hello. I d-don't suppose you r-remember me? I w-went to the prison to v-visit, b-but you weren't there. D-did you hear about your...you know about your f-friends, r-right?"

Daen manages to make a decent showing of himself despite his hard physical training and the extra fights this past weekend. He's still quite sore, but hopefully he will get past that. He did loosen up a bit through the exercise, but he'd had better days. The way they were working on new things gave Daen a bit of hope he'd be able to at least use a practice sword for this Fireday's fights. If he doesn't have to rely on his fists, he can do so much more. But he was also down on himself for getting ahead of the game. It wouldn't do to have dashed expectations on Fireday, it could cause him to lose his edge.

He received the script, and since he respected Jalen as a warrior and for his open attitude, he made a point to make his rendezvous. After a day like today, he also wanted to get some work done with Comell. So after the disparaging words toward the newcomer and their dismissal, he headed off to the Professor's Offices.

The physical training gives Grimold a workout. Though the exercise is tough, he notices that life on the streets seems to have prepared him well for it. He even finds the obstacle course fun, and combat training isn't so bad when you're not at risk of being brutally murdered.

Fisk manages to take all the enjoyment out of it when he calls him up in front of the others just to insult him. He had to bite his tongue to keep from doing something incredibly stupid. Felipe isn't hear to protect you anymore when you shoot your mouth off. Still, as much as the words hurt, public humiliation is a far cry from public execution.

As Elyssa pats him on the back, he gives her a rueful smile. "That's funny. My mother says the same thing."

Grimold's eyes narrow as Eilidh speaks. "Yes, they're to be sent to the salt mines, and I'm to join them if I can't prove myself here." His upper lip curls into a sneer as he adds, "Thank you for the reminder."

Eilidh shakes her head, looking both distraught and a touch annoyed. She reaches out hesitantly to touch Grimold on the shoulder. "I-I'm sorry. They're...They're dead. I w-went to the p-prison, and there was blood all over the cell." She looks around to see which of the others are nearby, especially looking for Fisk. Once she's satisfied he's not around, she goes on. "Th-there was a p-paper just outside the c-cell, in a p-pile of ash."

She lowers her voice conspiratorially, stepping a touch closer to Grimold, and continues. "L-look, I n-never wanted th-this for y-you. Between dinner and meeting with Jalen, Eilidh searches for the archery range. She'd been here for two weeks, but she'd never heard about it or seen it. Then again, though, the Bonewatch was much bigger than she imagined it'd be.

Damn, I forgot to include one of the random events :(

Day 14
Characters: Daen

Daen's spent a fair bit of time practicing this weekend and it shows, although he is exhausted his style still brings him through. Unfortunately, his tiredness caused him to miss a few subtle changes to his equipment before practice. In the middle of a sparring match with Kassara, a few of the buckles on his leather armor snap and it tumbles around him, tripping him up. It takes him some time to fix the problem, but he still manages to force his way through the class successfully.

Day 14
Characters: Daen

..Hm..just realized how cruel events have been to Daen lately..

Daen has not had an easy time the last three weeks. His spat with Leo, Fisk's attitude and the issue with the thief, Grimold, haven't made a good impression of the Knights of Ozem. Professor Comell has been a boon to that--his jovial personality, desire to teach and pleasure in helping Daen learn how to read and write magical scrolls has been somewhat of a balm.

Unfortunately, Daen is not having a good day.

In fact, he's having a very bad day.

Day 14
Characters: Eilidh

Eilidh's showing at training may not have been fantastic, but Fisk's attention was focused on Grimold that day and she slips under his notice. She decides to take up Vorin's advice and spend some time hunting down the archery range.

Allie finds the range before she finds the entrance to it. The hedge wall Vorin talked about actually seems to separate it from the rest of the courtyard--on all sides. After circling for a few moments, she realizes her options are to force her way through the hedge or find the entrance from within the Bonewatch.

Day 14
Characters: Daen

A peculiar feeling grips Daen's mind and he feels a choke on the back of his throat. He realizes it is an enchantment of some sort, although he is not sure of what--only that he finds himself now unable to lie.

A voice booms behind him even as the door slams shut. "Daen Aheritor. Where is the book? Who are you working for?"

Behind him, the looming figure of Comell stands in front of the door. The fat professor with his scarred arms and limping leg usually seems very harmless--but at this moment his red face and scars are quite intimidating. He doesn't wait for an answer, moving toward the scrub with his cane in one hand, looking as he's about to wallop the half-elf.

Daen was no stranger to angry outbursts and threats of violence. Normally he was either able to escape or bear what was about to happen to him. This was something entirely new. Never before had he been the subject of such enchantments, although he'd read of them in books. He racked his mind trying to figure the roughness of this particular one. In any case, it didn't particularly matter because it was obvious that this Professor's power exceeded his ability to resist.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

"I work for you, sir." Daen spoke the truth, but it was obvious that the particular notion he'd just expressed wouldn't be sufficient. "I also don't know what book you're talking about. I'd be glad to help you find it if you'd stop scaring me."

I'd have liked to save that 20 for something more useful. Sigh. Not a good day for rolls. Good thing I still passed the class.

At the Gilded Dragon:

Allie smiles up at the barkeep as she sips on her beer. ”He sounds like quite the hero!” she says, ”Do you remember his name?... Just between you and me, the city wants to offer rewards to normal citizens who display acts of altruism and bravery, my mother’s involved in the program and I’m sure that he’d be offered a reward. Do you know anything that might help me find him?”

Talking to Allie that night in the barracks:

When she returns to the barracks that night, Kassie seeks out Allie and flops down onto the bed next to her. Leaning in, she whispers: “I stayed a little while after you ran off, are you OK? That man, Silverius, was horrible. The pentarchos said that his daughter’s in the Watch though. I wonder who it is? ” after a moment, she continues, ”I managed to get some of that ash from the prison. Apparently some kid came past and told the guards about a fire at a bar nearby – some of the guards left to deal with it. I don’t think it can be a coincidence! If we want to find out who killed the prisoners maybe we should also try to find out how the fire started? The guards who were on duty will be back tomorrow. I think we should talk to them.”

Training the next day

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

The next day Kassie joins the others for another bout of training with Fisk. Relieved to finally be using her blade, she enjoys the session enormously, laughing prettily when Daen’s armour falls around his ankles, she manages to give him a wack on the ass with the flat of her blade as he struggles with the leather.

Daen's Spellcraft:

Comell cast a Zone of Truth on the area.

The Knight frowns, pausing with his cane in one hand, looking cautious. He keeps his back to the door, between him and Daen, but his eyes are darting around checking exits.

"...You may be deflecting. State it plainly, Daen. You did not steal or take any books, treatises, papers, essays, or other scripts with writing on them from this office? You were the only one in here that day...my office is locked with mundane and magical means. And no one--No one! should have known what was in here."

Comell looks slightly less threatening, more confused and, almost more alarmingly, he looks suddenly incredibly worried.

Golden Dragon Kassara:

That's going to require a bluff check :P

"Hmn..I don't know about reward, but I think he's come around the kitchens a few times. I like to have leftovers fed to the poor around here rather than go to waste--it doesn't due to see Vigil citizens starve!"

Grimold just stares at Eilidh, dumbfounded. His eyes cloud over, a series of expressions cross his face, finally settling on passive shock. He has no idea how to deal with this information, how he should react. Were they killed by the guard? Was he supposed to die with them? Just what in Desna's name had he gotten himself into?! With a slow shake of his head, he says, "I'm going to die in here."

That night, he starts sleeping with his dagger under his pillow.

Kassie:

Eilidh rolls over to look at Kassie, giving her a shaky grin. "I'll be fine, I think. Thanks for talking to them, though, and for getting some of that ash. I don't think there's a lot you and I can do with it, but maybe that old dwarf teacher could tell us something about it. I think it was a spell that killed them.

We could try the guards, but I somehow don't expect them to know much, and tracking down the boy that reported the fire is going to be another dead end. Whoever did this didn't want to be found, and I doubt we have the resources here to find them. At least, not without help, we don't. Should we talk to the dwarf teacher?"

Grimold:

In the courtyard, Eilidh fidgets a bit as Grimold reacts to her news. "Are...are you okay? N-no, you're n-not going to d-die here. You j-just need to p-play along with wh-what everyone else is d-doing. L-look, I got you here, s-so I'm r-responsible f-for you, alright? H-here's what I know about th-this place."

Daen took a deep breath and calmed his nerves somewhat. "I have not ever taken anything from these offices or library without your express permission beyond what I have personally brought into them." He raised his eyebrows and looked expectantly at his employer. "I believe that's unequivocal enough, don't you? Now let me know if there is anything I can do to help." Of course Daen wasn't saying this completely altruistically. He knew that grateful employers were sometimes generous, and also he wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about the professor's particular research as well.

So the murderer's name is Jalen. Grimold's nostrils flare as he considers Eilidh's words. Her explanation of how things work here lined up with Daen's, with some new information as well; he hadn't heard about the extra classes. Was this a peace offering she was making or was there more to it then that? She said she was responsible for him, but what did she mean by it?

"You are Allie Tilernos, yes?" He sighs, having trouble ordering his thoughts. "If it hadn't been for you, I would have been sent to the mines or killed with the others in that cell. But if it hadn't been for your friends, mine wouldn't be dead." He held up a hand to stall her reaction; he wasn't finished. "I will do what I must to survive here. If I don't, my family starves. I will cooperate with you and your sister, but your friends are not my friends." He shakes his head as he adds, "Jalen least of all." He sighs again and his mouth turns upward, not quite making it to a smile. "It is better that I do not attend your meeting, but thank you for your advice. May Desna bless your stars."

Day 15

Kassara
The innkeeper tilts his hat back and whistles. ”Reward, huh? Good luck with that.” He looks over his shoulder and shouts into the kitchens.

”Mihali! Mihali, come out here! I've got a gal who's working with the Guard and wants to ask you a question.”

A squat halfling squeezes his way through the double door. He is, very likely, the fattest halfling you have ever seen. His red hair is covered by a dirty chef hat with large, thick mutton chops reaching to his chin. A string of garlic is strung over one shoulder and his sleeves are pushed up. Despite the rotund stomach, his arms seem strong and bear a detailed tattoo ending in his shield mark. He moves to the bar edge and grunts. After a few, awkwardly long, moments, a scuffing sound can be heard under the bar. The barkeep smiles at Kassie and nods his head, keeping the smile and eye contact on her. Finally, the head of the halfling re-appears.

”What'choo want?'

After explaining herself again, Kassie finally gets some information. ”Yeah, a scrawny runt goes by the name of Josica. He warned us, and the guard about it. Didn't say who started the fire though.”

Sense Motive DC 10:

Even the barkeep seems a bit unnerved at how long it takes the halfling to retrieve a box sturdy enough to support him. But he already started smiling at Kassie and to stop now would seem unfriendly. So he maintains the awkward smile and eye contact the whole time.

Characters: Eilidh
Allie finds it fairly easy to move through the hedges. In fact (using your first d20 roll) she discovers the hedge is just an illusion. The courtyard for the archery area is beautiful. Several fountains showing famous Lastwall heroes are lined up beside a covered arch that protects several waterproof boxes holding bows and practice arrows. The targets are set at various distances, 30', 60', 120' and 200'. There is enough room to set the targets further away. Only a single person currently occupies the area. A tall, thin elven woman in a red and black outfit of exotic, peculiar style that Allie is not familiar with. Her pants are wide and when she stands still it looks more like a dress. She is firing at the furthest target.

Characters: Grimold

Grimold is directed a cheap scribe living nearby in the city. The place itself reminds Grimold of the Oathless quarters near the docks. The building, while large, is in need of repair. The shutters hang off of the windows, paint curls off the wooden walls and the fence around it is overgrown with weeds. A large sign bearing a carved quill hangs from a single chain above the door, the other having broken recently. Within Grimold finds the smell of paper and must, piles of books along the floors and shelves moving off into the distance. Paper, scrolls and parchment lays scattered about in seeming no order.

A bald man with wire spectacles is writing furiously on a parchment, one finger scanning a copy of the work he is copying. At your entrance, he looks up and adjusts the glasses. ”Ah! Customers! Come in, Come in! What can I do for you? Perhaps a book on warriors? Adventurers? Ah no—a boy like yourself..folk tales?”

Characters: Daen

Sense Motive DC 10:

Comell seems to believe you, and actually doesn't seem that surprised by your answer.

Sense Motive DC 15:

While not surprised by the answer, its obvious Comell was hoping Daen was the culprit even while he also didn't suspect the young man much. The worry in his brow makes Daen wonder at the importance of the item.

Comell lets out a sigh and the cane's point drops to the ground. He leans heavily upon it, waving a hand. ”Sorry to frighten you, boy. I had to be sure..I had hoped...no, I know you were not a likely culprit. You do not seem the type. “

He moves past Daen and slumps at his desk, tapping the cane against it. ”Did you see a set of unbound papers on my desk during your last visit when you left? A Treatise?” He carefully avoids mentioning the title.

Grimold's eyebrow arches in skepticism at the mention of folk tales. He'd heard of tales being written down and bound lifeless in the pages of books, but he'd never actually bothered to read any. Books had none of the same power as a story well-told by bards in taverns, and he told the man as much. "What good is a book of stories when I can hear them told better in any tavernroom on the docks?" He hands the man the list of titles he needed, but some part of him is hoping the man might actually have an answer.

Let's try this again, shall we.

I hadn't brought this up in the recruitment thread, but many/most people living in Vigil have something called a Shield-Mark. Its a Mark of Justice (spell) that forms a tattoo-like shield on the palm of the right hand. The mark is an oath of loyalty to support the crusade and its ideals and to treat citizens with fairness, honesty and respect. Individuals asking to be soldiers in Vigil must swear to serve the commanders and citizens and to temper justice with mercy. Anyone without a mark cannot own property or businesses in Vigil and cannot carry weapons.

As you'll see in the gameplay thread, having a mark is not required of all scrubs. You can decide if your character already has one or not.

Copy-Pasted from the other Discussion:

I think your {old} Gameplay Thread is flagged as hidden. It happened to me earlier, when I started my Curse of the Crimson Throne game. If you tell a mod that you think it's flagged hidden, they should be able to fix it, but they didn't tell me how to do it.

Shield-Marks: I'd assume that the Tilernos family would have had them essentially from childhood. As one of the "old families" of Lastwall, it seems like they'd be taught from childhood to serve and to temper their justice with mercy, etc. If this isn't the case, Eilidh will still have one. Also, she prefers "Allie" over Eilidh, but her mother refuses to use the nickname.

@Kassara: We should figure out what our relationship is, as sisters. It's a great opportunity to RP relatives, and one that doesn't come up often.

Thanks for the opportunity, DMRaven!

I'd expect most Tilernos to have them as well, although there may always be an exception. Not every Tilernos lives in Vigil and the marks are a Vigil-specific, rather than Lastwall-specific, thing.

Hey Allie,

Given the age restrictions, if we decide to be sisters rather than (say) cousins, we'll have to be pretty close in age. Kassara works better (I think) as a 16 year old than a 15 year old, and probably wouldn't be very good as an older sister. My preference would be for us to be 16 year-old twins (I think Allie is 16?) - much more fun to play very close siblings than distant cousins! (like you say, opportunity doesn't come up all that often).

From our personality descriptions it seems like Allie is a bit dour and anxious, and doesn't make friends easily?? - in contrast, Kassara (maybe "Kassie" would be a good abbreviation to match Allie), is outgoing and doesn't take things seriously, making friends easily. It seems to me, therefore, that there are 2 obvious ways the relationship could go:

1: Confict - They dislike each other and don't get along at all well due to their different natures.

2: Synergy - They know each other's strengths and weaknesses, and have come to rely on the fact that each has strengths the other lacks. Allie acts as a check on Kassara's wild-side, Kassara stops Allie from retreating into a morass of friendless anxiety. - This doesn't preclude a lot of bickering (almost demands it in fact).

Either of these options could be fun, but i'm more inclined to go with option 2. What do you think?

NG Female Human Inquisitor 5 | HP 45/45 | AC 18, T 14, FF 14 | F 6, R 6, W 7 | Init +6 | Per +10

Yeah, cousins doesn't work as well, I think. It's a rare opportunity to play characters with a family relationship. Your analysis of the two characters is really close. I don't envision her as dour so much as unable/unwilling to commit to a close friendship, even if she wants to. Anxious, yes, shy, yes. Your character did seem like a more loud, rebellious (in a fun, good way) sister.

I'd love to play twins. I think some mixture of the two options would be best. I know just from living with my brother for 18 years that even if there's a lot of conflict, even if you're close. I'd lean toward the second option as well.

Great! Sounds like we've got a plan :)

Twins do sound interesting. This ought to be an intriguing situation. Kassara and Eilidh have very different personalities, which is one reason I selected both of them.

Side Note: There is a lot of tidbits of information here and there. Not all of it is terribly relevant to main plot points. Much of it is window dressing to help make the Bonewatch feel more alive for you all.

Thanks! - would it be possible to include important NPC info in the campaign tab?,,...

And which of the candidates are best looking? (a girl likes to know.)

There are a few twins out there that have vastly different personalities. Maternal twins in particular. I've had roommates and friends that were twins and it was amazing how different they could be. Of course, there was the one time I dated twins... that was a bad experience. Don't do that. It may sound good, but no. No it is not.

Daen is not terribly good looking. But he's not bad either, just terribly terribly average.

I love the amount of NPC's we're dealing with. You're really outdoing yourself with this one. I keep wanting to ask questions, but I put him into this as if he knows practically nothing that's going on. So I'll probably just ask them in character.

Male Elf Unchained Rogue/Wizard/Fighter 2

Depends on the type of person a character thinks is good looking I guess.

Eckart is blond and blue eyes and tall. but a bit on the thin side. Doesn't have the best looking clothes but is clean and 'well enough' off.

Very true,.. but are we fraternal or maternal twins? We're the same hight, similar weight and skin tone, but we have different coloured hair.... which means we have to be fraternal twins... Unless Kass bleaches hers, or Allie dyes it (or Kass spend a lot more time in the sun and her hair is a bit more bleached as a result. In any case we clearly look very similar.

What'd you think Alllie? Identical or not?

NG Female Human Inquisitor 5 | HP 45/45 | AC 18, T 14, FF 14 | F 6, R 6, W 7 | Init +6 | Per +10

I don't think we're identical twins. At least in Allie's case, the red is natural. She hasn't spent as much time as she probably should worrying about appearances, and given the technology level in Golarion, dying hair would either be expensive or a magical procedure. In any case, the two personalities are so different that it's unlikely we'd be identical twins unless the differing attitudes were rebellion against the identical thing, and I think growing up in the Tilernos household would give other things to rebel against if we needed them. Just my thoughts.

Female Human Swashbuckler 5 | AC: 20 [T: 16 FF: 15] | HP: 60/60 | F+3, R+8, W+1 | Init: +9 | Perc: +7 | Panache: 5/5)

I'm not fussed either way - I agree that Allie doesn't seem like the type to dye her hair, but Kass kind of does - especially if their mother has red hair (like you say - the rebellion thing, and bleaching is easy, even in low-tech Golarion). Identical twins' personalities can be very different after all.

Once selections/ranking is finished, the PC's will have time in their cohort barracks to talk to each other and others. Also, while the fight is going on, Eckart, feel free to start up conversations with those who aren't fighting.

As another aside: One advantage and disadvantage of PbP games is that they can be slow. This is an advantage as, unlike in a tabletop game, it is very easy to have long, in-depth conversations between players and NPCs. On the other hand, such conversations can slow down play if done improperly.

My preference is not interrupt NPC or PC interactions but instead move the game along around/beyond them and allow them to continue via spoilers. For example, if Eckart starts talking to Gideon or Austyn but isn't finished speaking before Kassara and Urias are done fighting; then that conversation can continue in spoilers for as long as necessary afterward.

And yes, I'll provide NPC information in the campaign tab under a spoiler. I'd intended to, just haven't gotten to it yet. It'll be an easy location for you to ctrl+f a name to figure out what they look like/who they are.

NPC information is up. Please let me know if the format is easily readable. I've attempted to organize the list and will update it whenever you learn more information about an individual or encounter more individuals.

Heheh. Doing nonlethal while raging is funny.

Actually she should be waking up. Cure spells cure as much non-lethal as they do lethal, so the non lethal damage she would have taken would be equal to her hit points followed by 7 points of lethal. Healing her for 6 hp would leave her with 1 point of lethal damage and 6 of non lethal, so she would be fine.

For reference, here's a link.

Ouch, poor Kassie! If only she had rolled a bit better, her higher AC could have helped out more. It's alright, she'll have a chance to prove herself in dueling, acrobatics and knowledge soon enough.

No prob, we all make mistakes. I, for instance, just had the forum eat my post. I'll have to put up another later.

Male Elf Unchained Rogue/Wizard/Fighter 2

I'm hoping that we perhaps get to group up in some exercises against the other groups of 20. Maybe there is some sort of challenge to be the best group as well. Who knows.

Until the cohorts get whittled down there won't be much direct competition. You'll see about the second part of your statement though.

Working 16 hours Thursday, won't get a post up till Friday.

I know Raven isn't going to be posting today, so if things get too fun in teh dorm, we'll catch up with that later and I'll bring Daen in.

Male Elf Unchained Rogue/Wizard/Fighter 2

I think some other stuff happens after a couple hrs. But Yea plenty of time to chat

On my phone but will try to get something up before getting off work.

On phone all day but planning to post. Excuse any spelling errors or odd format please! Any ooc questions van be asked here.

Side note: secret and special things are granted to taking certain actions enough times in a month. Anything from gaining contacts, discounts in items and New abilities.

Side note two: Any pc with family in the knights know that sabotaging another cohort is expected and elaborate tales of pranks abd rivalries are told by every Knight to their kids. At the same time, getting caught results in punishment. Think of it as training for those who are sneaky. Its not your traditional chivalric knighthood as you learn!

Edit: just. Noticed it was Urias who asked about alastwall and not Kassie. Sorry!

In the future, will we be able to make the additional actions before our skill checks? We all made them today, but I can see us not doing so in the future, so the extra +2s and +4s might be really useful.

Also, in the downtime rules, we could use some of our capitol to help us with related skill checks, so if we did some downtime stuff and use our Goods, Influence, Labor or Magic points to increase our scores for these checks as well? Even though we are training all day, you'll allow full downtime rules in the midst of this? I've never worked with the downtime rules before, and it seems you can earn up some interesting things. Do you want us to come up with RP and justification for what we're doing or do you want us to tell you what we want to earn and you figure out whether or not we can do it and how?

Now about training for a future bout, are the +2s for each day in preparation cumulative? Can I spend 2 days to get a +4 to AC or something like that? Or are the +2s non cumulative, but if I spend extra days, I can have a +2 to AC and +2 to Damage?

I almost said I don't mean to ply you with questions, but that's exactly what I mean to do, so I'm not going to say it.

As a typed bonus from the same source, training benefits do not stack. And yes, you won't actually have a chance to even use an action the first day, but will on subsequent ones. The first week is a sort of "adjusting to how things work." Of course, there are some events that will prevent you from using your actions as well.

You can use capital in all the ways described, including using as skill checks while in Vigil.

Downtime rules are useful but very, very slow. Especially when the PC's aren't exactly gaining a large gold income to pay for their capital.

Questions are fine!

The first day was sort of to set up the scene. The entire first week will be introducing the PC's and players to the mechanics for the coming weeks/months.

Male Elf Unchained Rogue/Wizard/Fighter 2

lol what do we do if we don't have enough money to purchase these required things?

NG Female Human Inquisitor 5 | HP 45/45 | AC 18, T 14, FF 14 | F 6, R 6, W 7 | Init +6 | Per +10

I would guess you'd have to work up the courage to ask someone to borrow, or spend a day of "downtime". Just a guess, though. I'll have the books soon, but I don't know how many people can read from one set in the two-and-a-half days we have before the due date. Also, Eilidh is tired of giving away things for free. She might want a favor later.

You're not expected to really have the gold on hand to buy the incredibly overpriced books at the War College. Comell sets it up that was as a sort of test. He wants to see if scrubs can locate resources, obtain them with their limited funds and what they do when curve balls are thrown into the equation.

It's cool.

On a side note, my family is getting together this week for Thanksgiving, my brother came in this morning. I doubt I'll have very much time to post, but I'll do my best to keep up. If I'm holding up the line, feel free to make whatever check I need for me, or I'll do them all when I can.

NG Female Human Inquisitor 5 | HP 45/45 | AC 18, T 14, FF 14 | F 6, R 6, W 7 | Init +6 | Per +10

Septima is going to love me! Also, I'll also be out of town from Wednesday through Sunday of next week. I'll try to post a few times, but if you need to make rolls for me, don't hesitate to do so.

PbP always slows down a bit around holiday time/holiday weeks. I don't mind! I'll do my best to keep those who stick around entertained and progressing forward. There's plenty of room for side conversations due to the format.

A google spreadsheet with the NPC attitudes has been added. Should be easier to view for multiple reasons. I made it color coded to, hopefully, make it easier to quickly glance down a column and see attitudes. Let me know if the colors hinder rather than help.

The chart is nice, but you might want to switch colors. If you go with Helpful as Blue, Friendly as Green, Unfriendly as Orange and Hostile as Red, you won't have to deal with bold text and it'd be easier to see at a glance.

Thank you, that does look a lot better.

Is Trainer Fisk unfriendly because he's a drill sergeant, or because he hates us?

Edit: @ DMRaven: "Sometimes...sometimes I have to mumble, too. Mumbling is easy."

Because he's your drill sergeant. Also, he hates everyone.

Still need Day four rolls and actions for Eckart. Also need Day Four action from Urias.
