DM Oladon |
Gah! What kind of players are you guys?! I'm going to kill you all and replace every last one of you!
Asht'el |
Three of us will be at PaizoCon, at least. Maybe we should just play without the DM Bag? She had the option and chose not to go. Anyone else care to join us in Seattle?
Njord Bjornson |
I thought we already renamed it 'Everyone but Oladon-con'.
DM Oladon |
On a more serious note, do you guys want to take a temporary break while 73.3% of the crew is at Paizocon or elsewise unavailable?
Njord Bjornson |
I can't speak for the other slackers but I'm still going to be available for posting.
Randall Quickstep |
As mentioned, I will be away for a week. I suspect posting will be restricted or non-existent. Feel free to bot Randall as necessary if you decide to advance the story.
Njord Bjornson |
Come on guys. We've got a fortress full of elves to kill!
DM Oladon |
I'm heading out tomorrow on a camping trip, and will be back next Tuesday or Wednesday... or possibly Thursday, depending on how lonely the bears are. I won't be posting during that time.
DM Oladon |
If any of you use my Paizo Campaign Tools browser extension, you may be interested to know that I've just released a new version with an exciting new feature.
DM Oladon |
Nah, not when it's in a Google doc. I used to use a site called... something or other that I can't remember at the moment, where you guys could move your own pieces.
DM Oladon |
I'd like to point out at this point that I don't think anyone has used their Christmas present yet.
Asht'el |
Gang - my infrequent posting of late may get even more infrequent for a bit. I'm being deployed on Wednesday (Sep 2) to the island of Saipan (a US territory) to help clean up in the aftermath of Typhoon Soudelor. My available time and connectivity are both difficult to predict at this point. I return on September 24 and will post as I'm able.
DM Oladon |
Sorry for another bout of radio silence, guys... I'm fending off a cold.
The good news is that I think I'm close to victory... the bad news is that I'm going to be gone all day tomorrow if I'm feeling well enough (and in bed if I'm not).

Off topic questions
I am building a gunslinger, is it worth trying to build one for online play? Or, is it even worth trying for one for say PFS? Or should I go to something else? Bolt Ace? or another class.
Asking because some of you are GMs of games and prolific in your games and hanging out with other GMs.
DM Oladon |
I'm starting a new job tomorrow and will not be posting during business hours in the interest of staying focused and disciplining my mind.
I'm hoping that we can still progress at a decent pace; we're getting close to the end of book 5, at which point Feral will take over for the home stretch.
Let's do this!
Kobold Catgirl |
I'm about to head off, but with regards to the wands, this is where my search will begin when I get back.

A note to all my games:
I am closing on my house on 10/30 at 9AM Central. That means between now and then and a few days after, my world revolves around packing and getting ready to move. We are moving all the big stuff the next day. Internet should be on at the house 10/30 in the afternoon. I will be checking through various mobile forms of communication but please don't let me hold up games. Thanks.
Asht'el |
Good luck on the move and congrats on the house, Jametor!
As always when leveling up Asht'el, I'm spending large amounts of time pondering spell choices. Here are some I'm thinking about (I get one each of level 4, 5, & 6):
4th level: Charm Monster, Confusion, Greater Infernal Healing, Greater False Life, Greater Invisibility, Communal Protection from Energy, Wall of Fire
5th level: Cone of Cold, Feeblemind, Geyser, Suffocation, Teleport, Wall of Force, (I was going to suggest Smug Narcissism, but realized I’d be expected to cast it on others, rather than myself or Jametor)
6th level: Chain Lightning, Explode Head!, Sirocco
I also would welcome feat advice, as I'm not used to running spellcasters at this level.
Randall Quickstep |
What does Asht'el want to be when he grows up? Pure damage-dealing spellslinger? Battlefield controller? Party buffer?
In reverse order, for me (not being Asht'el, however), I could totally see Chain Lightning as a choice if you want to deal (non-fire) damage to several foes. Keep in mind that demons are immune, so if you think we will be fighting demons, you would wind up using the slots for a lower-level spells instead. Something like...
Cone of cold is another good potential (non-fire) damage option that I believe has a higher max than the non-intensified fireball. However, Wall of Force is a good way to split a group of foes or just make them have trouble to reach you. Of course, you can always teleport and wish them a fond farewall.
I have an enchanter that is regretting being an enchanter lately - her foes often make their saves on her spells - Charm Monster and Confusion are in her ballpark. It's great to turn a bad guy into a friend, however, when it works. Lasting for days is hard to beat. Your Greater.... set help survivability for you or allies - not going to lie, I would love Greater Invisibility going into an epic battle. Communal Protection of Energy is nice.
HOWEVER! You need to pick spells that you are interested in spamming. Something that you will cast once a day is a weaker choice for a sorcerer than it is for a prepared caster. Something that gives you versatility - useful in and out of battle, maybe. A wall of force can function as a bridge, for example, or a ramp. Of course, if you are in battle, anything dealing damage might be case over and over again.
Feat choices that make your spell choices more versatile, saves more difficult, etc. Is there metamagic you are interested in? Some extend your spell's range, duration, etc. Quicken is expensive, but has its place. Empower has been shown to be preferable to Maximize for its cost.
Hopefully there is something there you can work with.

And for myself, I need to figure out what feat to choose, also.
Anybody considering any teamwork feats? I'm also wondering about Swap Places (?) from Seekers of Secrets, Surprise Attack, or Go Unnoticed.
My base damage is low enough that Vital Strike or Improved Critical are of limited interest.
Improved Feint might be a strong choice - I can't remember, but it might be why I boosted my Int last time... Have to go back and see if I said anything about it.
Randall Quickstep |
Looks like I considered Improved Disarm to go with my Weapon Snatch. If only we fought things that used weapons...
Mobility is not a bad idea. Surprised I don't have it yet.
Asht'el |
Thanks, Randall, that's a helpful set of questions and ideas.
I'm a little betwixt and between on what Asht'el wants to be when he grows up. Because he did a lot of harm to his family with his fire magic before he could control it, he's a bit shy of just blasting away, so I've given him a focus on conjuration (but not summoning) in order to be a battlefield controller. I've enjoyed that a lot, but it turns out there are not that many spells in the black tentacles or glitterdust vein, where I conjure something that requires a save on the part of my foes. And where there are some, they sometimes have downsides that I don't really like - such as fleshworm infestation, which is a cool spell in some ways, but a bit nastier than Asht'el tends to be, and it requires a touch attack, and he just doesn't want to get up close and personal like that. So in some ways, I'm like your enchanter, having painted myself into a bit of a corner.
On the other hand - fire runs in the dude's veins, no? So I can't help but look at some of the blasting spells, even ones like cone of cold, which I could turn into a cone of flame with my bloodline arcana. But I don't want to overlap too much with Jametor either.
And on the other, other hand - Asht'el does regret the harm he's done in the world, and thus is glad to be hooked up with you all trying to save it. And buffing his friends makes him feel like he's part of a team of good guys, which is nice.
Looking back over this post, I appear to have said 'Yes' to all three of the options you laid out as possible roles for him... Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.
Edit: Yes, I agree, Mobility would be a good choice for someone in Randall's line of work.
Moar edit: Cone of Cold and Rime Spell would be fun! But then I'm sort of poaching on Firiel's turf.
Randall Quickstep |
For a feat, have you considered Reach Spell? I forget the cost, but it can change a touch spell to a ranged touch. I like it for healing from the back row, but certain attacks would work well with it. Vampiric Touch comes to mind.
Randall Quickstep |
I forgot about your arcana. With that in mind, I would avoid fire spells. Pick other energy types and convert them as necessary. But you knew that.
Asht'el |
For a feat, have you considered Reach Spell?
I had considered it, but I had also misunderstood it. I didn't realize it could make a touch spell into a ranged touch, I thought it just moved ranged spells up by a range category. That would open up a lot of possibilities!
Jametor Darksbane |
Remember Ash, we have that comixture feat that allows us to combine our forces (shape of... form of..) and we don't use it a lot. There are times where I wish I had focused on conjuring but when I made the switch, the hobbits were still getting things online and we had a few battles where everything seemed to go crazy. This is my first high level and obviously my first spellcaster so I am sure I have made all the mistakes.
Randall Quickstep |
I am leaning toward Mobility or Improved Feint, but could be persuaded to do something else, especially if Firiel has a teamwork feat in mind.
Surprise Attack is a legitimate contender, too.
Jametor Darksbane |
Yeah feat is holding me up too. Meta seems like the way to go, but which one. I was thinking still or silent, but I am not sure.
