After another of many days spent exploring and mapping the territory between the Gudrin and Shrike rivers, the party strikes camp along the bank of the southern river.

The waters of the Gudrin river are unusually clear; the river itself runs slow and deep, averaging 450 feet across and 150 feet deep at the deepest point.

The weather is fine if a bit cool as night approaches. You find a suitable spot and begin to set up for the night... take it away! :)

Night watch order please.

Danna has still not replaced her animal companion correct?

I have some additional material to relay to you (as you may gather from the additions to the map) tomorrow. I would also like everyone to repost your character bio/backstory to your character sheets here for easy reference. Thanks.

Any other business to attend to?

Bjelich busy's himself with packing up the camp. As he works he says to Kyras, "You know it sure would have been nice to have spoken with that boggard. I think that bag of goo he caught Grigor with would be a useful item to aquire."

Female AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13; HP33 Human (Ulfen/?) Druid Level 5

I believe Crix is with us unless we either retcon'd it so he wasn't with us or actually went back to Oleg's which we might have done. I guess I really don't know. As far as where to, I think we were just following the river.

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Kyras wakes early and has a light breakfast by the fire before settling down to contemplate his spells for the day. After a time of quiet study he gathers up his spellbook and carefully wraps it in a thick sheet of leather before stowing in his pack.

Kyras then helps begin to breakup camp and prep the horses for the days journey. He looks over towards where Crix and Danna are prepping their horses and gear.I wonder if he will ever forgive my action. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts Kyras finishes prepping his horse.

Well Bjelich if you would like to leave him a note maybe he won't run off next time. Either way we know where he is next time we can come more prepared.

Wheeling his horse to the west Kyras looks at the others. Lets keep following the river west and we will try and map as we go. With that he spurs his horse west leading the others along the river bank.

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Yes Crix is still with us.

After breaking camp, you head down river towards unexplored territory. Not long after getting underway, you pass a shallow section of the river that you determine would allow you to ford the otherwise formidable body of water. Being at the southernmost edge of your charter's defined area, you ignore it for now and carry on along the northern bank. Shortly before noon you spot a large body of water to your west. Carrying on, you eventually arrive at the spot where the river flows into the lake. You find yourself on the eastern shore of a lake that you surmise is referred to by the locals as the "Tuskwater".

The lake is quite large. You estimate that it is about 10 miles across west to east at this point and twice as long north to south. The lake seems to narrow to the south. As your gaze turns northward, you spot what looks like a plume of smoke rising from a large hill on the northernmost shore of the lake.

Consulting with your map, you determine it will take you at least 6 hours to reach the northern shore of the lake, and that does not allow for crossing the Shrike river that almost assuredly also drains into the Tuskwater. Returning the ford on the Shrike (Hex F5) would add another 6 hours there and back again to reach the source of the smoke.

Hex H5 not fully explored/mapped. No XP awarded.

Where to?

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Kyras looks at the others. The bandits perhaps? We will have to head to the ford of the Shrike either way to get there.

Unless anyone else offers up some other option Kyras leads the group towards the ford.

Female AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13; HP33 Human (Ulfen/?) Druid Level 5

Upon hearing Kyras' suggestion that the smoke may indicate the bandits she takes Kyras aside. Do you think it wise to take Crix to a bandit camp? If Than is there his emotions may over-ride any orders we give and put him, and all of us in danger. I would suggest we skirt the area, perhaps gather a bit of information and take him back to Oleg's then approach the area from the west side. We may even acquire some reinforcements at Oleg's.
She leaves Kyras to think about this and perhaps discuss it with the others out of Crix's hearing.

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Kyras leans closer to Danna.I have no intention of attacking the fort today. I want to take a look, from a distance, just to see what we are facing. I intend to skirt back north towards Oleg's then we shall return without Crix.

He nods to Danna happy that they are on the same page and continues to lead the way.

Bjelich nods in agreement with Kyras' plan to recon the source of the smoke, If the smoke is indeed coming from the bandit fort, we will need a sound plan before our meeting with them. Although, I don't think Oleg can spare anyone for this, Danna's right, we should look into using any and all resources outside of this party.
The cleric smiles in jest, Besides, perhaps now we can leave a note with the boggard on our way back to Oleg's.

You turn and ride north following the lakeshore. The area is abuzz with the sounds of life. Birds chirp and pluck fish from the clear waters of the lake. You spot a fox in the distance, which quickly makes its escape as you approach. As the afternoon passes, you reach the northern bit of the lake and find yourself at the headwaters of the Shrike as it begins its journey northward to Brevoy. From the eastern bank of the river, the hill and plume of smoke are much closer. Just a mile or so from the other bank, and near the lake.

You can make out some sort of structure, mostly wooden from the look of it, and with what looks like a palisade wall. The hill it sits upon is completely barren of vegetation, giving a commanding view of the surrounding area. It dawns on you that you might in fact be visible if someone is watching from the few towers you spy dotting the structure.

Realizing that the party may be visible Kyas quickly leads the party north following the Shrike river.

He spouts off a few items see the discussion re: Oct. 2011 of note, I recall Kressle mentioned there are about 10 bandits there at any given time, sometimes more. None of them sounded particularly nice. She also said something about another entrance off to the side, didn't she?

You only have a few hours before you need to strike camp for the evening. Not enough to leave this hex, let alone make it to the river ford before dark (in H6, six hours away).

Where do you wish to make camp?

The priest of Erastil shifts in his saddle. Leaning forward, he squints at the fort in the distance and ponders out loud, Supposing they've spotted us, how long do you suppose it would take them to get here, if they bother sending anyone?
A few minutes goes by before Bjelich turns his gaze to the skies above then back to Kyras, Kyras, the hour is getting late, we should find someplace discreet to make camp. Looking about for any patches of trees in which to find shelter, the priest shakes his shoulders, It's going to be a cold night and there is much to discuss. No bonfire tonight guys!

So the plan is to ride another hour or two north along the river and then make camp for the night?

Go ahead and have your discussion as well...

Female AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13; HP33 Human (Ulfen/?) Druid Level 5

Yes, let us put as much distance as we can between us before nightfall.

I can't remember, we don't have the wagon or anything right?

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

No wagon right now. Yes I would put as much distance between us and where they could see us.

Corbius listens as Bejlich and Danna recount the information shared by Kressle. I imagine unless they came by boat it would take them over a day. I would be more concerned about an ambush at the river. They know we have to cross there. That is what I would do.

Before dark Kyras leads the group into a likely camp site and dismounts. Lets camp here for the night. And Bjelich is right we cannot have a fire it is likely to draw unwanted attention.

How should we approach the fort? A frontal assault is likely suicide. We cannot sneak in unless we can fly? Try subterfuge? Or using the supposed secret passage? What do you think would work?

You awake the following morning after having ridden another hour north from the shores of the lake. The night had passed uneventfully but uncomfortably without a fire to keep warm or prepare the evening meal.

The morning is chilly and a light fog envelopes the hills in all directions.

What is the plan for today?

Flextime (last night)
The very thought of assaulting the fort invokes imagery from a recent nightmare - a delirious laugh, blood spilling from his comrade's throat ...a cold shiver runs down the cleric's spine, We are ill prepared for a frontal assault, that much is true. And I don't believe subterfuge will work. We never caught up with those other bandits - it is likely the Stag Lord is aware of who we are and what we look like. Bjelich takes a bite of his cold rations, chasing it down with a bit of ale, I think it is at least worth trying to find the passage Kressle mentioned. We could continue north, back across the river F5, then west F4-F1. It would give us a chance to see the other side of their fort and perhaps a more favorable approach. He finishes his meager rations and tucks his empty cup back into the bag at his feet, Actually, I would prefer they ambush us. Any chance to reduce their numbers prior to entering the fort is favorable. Bjelich thinks for a moment, How hard do you think it would be to lure some of them out?

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Arising to a foggy morning Kyras is quiet and contemplative as he gathers his gear together for the day ahead. After prepparing his mount and helping the others Kyras mounts his horse. He peruses the map for a few moments before handing it back to Grigor.

Turning to the others. I intend for us to ride to the river ford and turn due west until we are south of the shrine of Erastil. I want to see if we can gather more information on the bandits fort as well as check in on our friend at the temple. At that point we will return to Olegs. Be on the lookout if the bandits saw us yesterday they may wait in ambush for us so be ready.

Crix stay close to Danna if anything should happen keep your head down and do as she says.

Otherwise lets keep the chatter down today no sense in warning anyone waiting for us that we are coming.

With that Kyras wheels his horse toward the ford his Rapier resting on his lap.

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Flextime

I believe the tunnel is our best approach. Waiting for them to come risks us being caught out in the open if some bandits were to return. As well, we are unlikely to bring down their walls and I am not interested in "laying seige" to the fort.

The tunnel is not without risk if they suspect us of coming we will be trapped with no escape. The risk is that Kressle has warned them of our approach that direction. However, if Kressle survived, if she returned to the fort, if she did not have some doubts planted by her conversation with us I still do not think she would tell the Stag lord. I doubt she would be treated well for sharing that information. Personally i hope she is there. I want to see her again.

Flextime
That's a lot to presume. A sly grin spreads across Bjelich's face as he continues, and there are ways to hide our approach , he makes a few playful 'arcane' gestures with his hands. His fun is shortly interrupted by a large yawn. The cleric stretches his arms then heads off to bed.

Next day!
Bjelich finishes his morning rituals, adding an extra prayer to Erastil, before packing up camp. Having double checked the packs loaded onto Mokos and MP, the cleric mounts his horse and carefully places his shield close by before falling in behind Kyras.

Flextime
There is some merit in dispatching some of the bandits ahead of time, but it is a tricky balance to achieve. Perhaps upon our return I can do a bit of scouting to see if any sentries can easily and quietly be lured away from their post. I do suggest that anytime we are in sight of the camp two of us should dismount and we should try to make this look as much like a pack train as possible.

Morning
Danna watches the morning arrive, not sure if she should be thankful for or wary of the fog. Before the others rise she listens carefully to the early morning stillness, trying to detect any misplaced noises.

As Bjelich listens to the druid's suggestion an eyebrow raises in interest, I like that! he smiles and nods adding, I think we could make that work, don't you Grigor? Looking around at the party's garb, in particular Grigor's shining armor, he remarks, Course we should try and dress the part too.

You break camp and ride with purpose downriver, making for the ford. You ride along in almost complete silence, knowing that you are in dangerous territory this close to the Stag Lord's base of operation. The fog seems to muffle some sounds and amplify others. On more than one occasion you find yourselves stopping and listening to noises that seem to be just outside your vision. The fog would have also posed a problem for navigation had it not been for the river to guide you.

The fog begins to lift shortly before noon and not long after that you arrive at the ford.

As you approach the wide expanse of shallow water where the two rivers meet you spot a downed horse on the far west side of the crossing. It lays just in the river near the bank on its side. You also immediately notice two bodies laying in the reeds along the shore itself. Multiple arrows protrude from each.

Danna's sharp eyes pick out a smaller body in the water with the horse. Barely visible, it lays across the neck of the still animal.

You are currently 150' from the downed horse and 165' from the far west bank.

Any questions? Actions?

As the fog lifts, Bjelich keeps an eye on the fort to the west. How far away are we from the fort? Can we make out any more detail? Lookouts on the walls?

Upon reaching the expanse and seeing the fallen horses, he checks their surrounds, looking for any signs of other horses or spots nearby that could be used to hide in ambush - grassy knolls, clumps of bush and trees...
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Perception check

You are in the next hex already.... 12 miles away from the fort, so no, you can't see any more detail. ;)

As for the ford... the far bank is a mix of brush, trees and tall grasses. Plenty of places to hide in. You scan the bank as best you can from this distance but you do not see anything other than the bodies.

Female AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13; HP33 Human (Ulfen/?) Druid Level 5

Judging by how the bodies fell and the position of the arrows, from which direction were they likely shot?

Danna lurches at the sight of the smaller figure and tells Crix to drop down as if to take cover, hoping he did not see it. She looks to Striker to see if she seems wary or senses anything while at the same time looking for any signs of another presence in the area.

Danna's perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Striker's perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

She whispers to the others, Let's spread out and approach. Cover me while I go to check the horse. Crix, please stay here and hidden until we know it is safe.

She waits briefly for any other ideas before proceeding cautiously across the ford with a shortspear in hand and Striker near by.

The map shows us in G5 :( Were we able to gleam any new intel about the fort as we past by or was everything in fog?

Grigor, take Crix and keep watch towards the south east watch our six, I'll move up to west to a high vantage point if possible. Danna, I will come at once should there be wounded. Bjelich, with Knut and MP in tow, moves his horse west to keep a look out.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Male Human L3 Cavalier (Dragon Order) Human L3 Cavalier

Grigor stays on his horse and leads Crix (who is presumably on foot) a few yards back up the trail, setting his lance into his saddle and pulling his crossbow from his back. He loads the crossbow with a normal bolt, and alternately watches Danna and the far shore, and the area around the trail to the south.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

In order...

Danna

You are far too far to make that determination. The fact you can see the arrows at all is commendable. :) (You all are currently suffering a -15 penalty to your perception checks due to distance to the horse and small body. Even more to the far bank.)

And regarding perception checks, I appreciate your pro-activeness, but I will be rolling those on your behaves. Just like I would for noticing traps, you wouldn't really know how well you did until proven otherwise. :)

And while I am discussing it, you only get one perception check until something significant changes to require a new check or the result of the 1st check would suffice (both at my discretion). I'll post an example in the OOC thread.

Bjelich

The map was not updated, because I thought it obvious given the bolded location bit in the post header... and the description of you being hours downriver at the ford. :)

You did in fact ride away from the fort the night before, putting an hours ride or more distance between you and the fort before striking camp. The fog was largely irrelevant at that point in the morning.

As for your current situation and positions, I present this rough map for your viewing pleasure. :)

MAP

There aren't really any higher vantages nearby that still give you a clear view of the river. Any hills would have you well back of the bank. For scale, remember you are roughly 150' from the downed horse currently. The darker splotches on the map are larger clumps of trees or piles of rocks etc.

Grigor

Glad to have you join us finally! :)

A few minor points. I am assuming Crix is either riding with someone, or is on his own horse (pack or otherwise). If not then I am going to have to significantly adjust how fast you guys have been moving/exploring. :P Someone please clarify.

Secondly, there is no "trail" to speak of. :) You are crossing "trackless" terrain currently... and have been navigating by the river bank for the last 6 hours. (East bank, heading northward)

In summation

I have Danna dismounted, spear in hand, crossing the ford on foot with Striker by her side. Grigor is keeping watch over her with his crossbow, scanning the far bank for threats. Bjelich is likewise doing the same, presumably with his bow(?) in hand. Crix is waiting upon his mount a few yards behind the rest of you.

Just need Kyras' actions to update things...

Anything else? Corrections? Questions?

Sorry, missed/overlooked the bit about how far we were from the fallen horse and bodies:) Can I presume everyone, or at least Bjelich, is able to move closer to the scene before taking up their lookout positions? Say within 50ft?

You would have to cross the open water/area of the ford to get within 50' of the horse and bodies. You would be essentially following Danna across the ford, but stopping 50' short of the horse.

Is this what you want to do?

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Sorry for the long delay been busy with birthdays and such the last couple of days.

Kyras looks as the others draw their bows and cover Danna from the bank. Kyras quickly dismounts drawing his thin blade as he moves beside Danna. If you think I am going to let you risk your life while I watch from the other shore you are mistaken. Following beside her he looks towards the riddled bodies. you check out the child? I will examine these two and keep your eyes open

As Kyras crosses he looks to see if there is any sign of deception on the bodies ie lack of blood. If he notes any he will warn Danna off as he continues forward.

Bjelich accompanies Kyras and Danna towards the bodies, but stops short about 20ft. away in case a short controlled burst of positive energy is needed :), I'll stand at the ready here. Bjelich (puts his dice away) readies his longbow as he keeps watch to the north west of the fallen horses.

Danna, Kyras and Bjelich dismount before wading into the river, heading towards the far shore and the visible bodies. Striker accompanies the trio as they struggle through the waist deep, chilly and steadily flowing water of the ford.

As they reach the midpoint, and before they can make out any more detail about the fallen bodies, Striker suddenly pins his ears back and lets out a loud hiss as he stares intently at the far bank.

At the same moment Bleich spots something odd...

Bjelich only:
...about the tree just behind and to the side of one of the bodies (B -25). As you try to make out what it is, you see a small flash of movement from the same spot.

DM only:

Kyras init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Bjelich init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Danna init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Grigor init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
??? init: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Only Bjelich will act in the surprise round, and he is first to act.

MAP - Ambush at the ford

HOLD! Bjelich calls for the party to stop and points to one of the trees just behind the 'bodies' B25 , I saw movement over there! He raises his bow and aims at the tree...

That is your entire action for your surprise round?

Bjelich will ready an action to fire an arrow at any target that resembles a bandit in the vicinity of B25

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Having barely survived their attack on the fort Kyras returns to the fort in a foul mood. He has ridden in silence most of the last three days. Only speaking to keep the group pushing the others forward hoping to stay ahead of any pursuit.

As they enter the fort Kyras spot Crix from across the yard. He makes eye contact for only a moment a slight shake of his head indicating that Than does not ride with them.

Looking away from the child he owes so much to he feels the bile rise in his throat realizing he has again let him down. His anger again rising he dismounts and tosses his hoses reigns to the nearest stable boy before heading off to the prisoners cell.

Slamming the door of the room open Kyras moves toward their hostage Rage in his face and fire in his eyes.

I a tired of these games bandits. I offered you a chance at redemption for sparring your life. By rule and right your life should be forfeit but I have spared it on the condition that you HELP US. That means more then only supplying the information we ask about.

You look me in the eyes and tell me you did not know about the undead outside the walls. You explain to me WHY you would not have warned us when you knew what we planned.

Do not offer me petty excuses! I am giving you one last chance to help us. I want to know everything you know about that fortress. Entrances, Hidden passages, Where the stag lord is in the camp. is there anything under the camp! I want to know it all.

Then you are going to help us infiltrate the camp. If there is no secret way in you are going to help us talk our way in.

I am giving you two reasons. One if you do not do everything I ask I will execute you on the morning in the square for your crimes. There wil of course be a trial and you will be allowed to offer defense and then I will personally take your head off. If you do all that I ask and we return successfully. I will release you.

Kyras pauses takes a deep breath as he remembers the fire.I will not fail Crix again His face still a mask of anger he turns and leaves the room. I will return at dawn tomorrow for your decision. You are being given a second chance make it count. With that Kyras slams the door on his way out.
