Male Human Expert 1 Warrior 1

I am opening up the gameplay thread for those who wish to begin roleplaying.

Your characters have diverse backgrounds, but there is one thing they all have in common. On this night, for what ever their personal reason, they found themselves at The Bloody Barrel. A den of ill repute in Port Peril; The Bloody Barrel is known equally well for its potent liquor and for its rowdy atmosphere.

The night is young, just after Nautical Twilight, the moon looms large in the sky, a waxing gibbous. The walls are made of wood and are quite thin, the ceiling is the only part of The Bloody Barrel that seems to be in good repair.

Inside is a scene of raucous revelry, the proprietor Big Tim, a dark haired human man no taller than a normal man's shoulders frantically runs about trying to keep his patron's in line. He is flanked by two large bouncers who aid him in, somewhat, keeping the peace. Four barmaids to serve drinks and a cook round out the employees. A small band plays a rowdy tune on a small stage in the corner, a hat placed out for donations. The noise of their fiddles and tambourine filters into the crisp night air outside.

Whether you are there as a slave to a pirate, an adventurer seeking fortune, as a salty scalawag seeking work or something more exotic is up to you, but it is here that our adventure begins.

A group of five burly and loud pirates sit around a table having a jolly good time. Accompanying them is a younger female with slick blue/green hair who is looking at her companions with daggers in her eyes. She is clearly not having a good time as her companions are.

high perception roll:

Looking closely you can see that she is probably an Undine. You also see is that there is a large shackle around her left leg, though there is no chain attached at this time.

A little tpsy from the alcohol, Doreen returns to the table carrying six mugs of ale, and sits down clumsily, spilling beer all over the table. She pushes the mugs towards her drinking buddies. Hoping to find a new crew to join after her last one was disbanded, the girl dedicates the night to drinking and talking to other pirates at the Bloody Barrel, looking for a new ship. "Here, fellas, this round's on me!" she says before telling another joke to entertain the group. The laughter cheers her up, but as the anedocte unravels, she notices that the blue-haired woman does not seem amused. Still, she goes on. "... by now, the clerk is furious with the parrot, and says 'Listen, you little bastard, we ain't got no grapes and we ain't gonna have no grapes anytime soon, so next time you come in to ask if we got grapes, I'll nail your goddamn wings to the floor!' The parrot leaves again, only to return ten minutes later. This time, he asks 'Got nails'? The clerk, still angry, yells a big 'No!', to which the parrot promptly replies 'Great! Got grapes?'" As the drunken pirates laugh falling back on their chairs, she leans over to the blue-haired woman and asks discreetly "Hey, why the long face?"

Seeing her 'companions' distracted she quickly says "Some of us are not here by choice, best ignore me and get away while you can." She takes a quick chug of the beer to hide her talking.

They never liked her talking to strangers. It is a miracle they brought her along tonight. Probably because she retrieved their latest treasure from a shipwreck under the sea.

She thinks "I guess this is their way to reward me. I would rather be rewarded by their slow deaths."

You can see her hateful gaze return on her companions.

Do you want to control the 5 pirates Michael?

You see a scruffy-looking man with a shoulder-length black hair and tanned skin, sitting in the corner and nursing an ale. His eyes are a pearly white, with no visible iris, though they are usually hidden underneath a bandanna tucked low over his brow. He has a thin nose, high cheek bones, and a strong jaw. He is dressed in black leathers, with a curved sword of eastern make at his belt and a dagger. He is tall, with a slim frame and straight posture.

Between drinks, he sings softly to himself, keeping time by patting the table in front of him.

Farewell and adieu, to you Nexian Ladies,
Farewell and adieu, ye ladies of Nex;
For we've received orders to sail for old Taldor,
But we hope in a short time to see you again.

We will rant and we'll roar like true Taldan sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar upon the salt sea.
Until we strike soundings in the channel of old Sellen;
From Escadar to Oppara is thirty-five leagues.

He stops suddenly and narrows his eyes at the exchange between the blue-skinned woman and the halfling.

@Calah, I am fine with you determining NPC reactions in cases like this. In general that will be true for any NPC you create so long as there are no mechanical benefits.

A tall pirate, the only one of the five with Calah who could be considered handsome turns to Doreen, I've no idea why she has the long face, she made us pretty rich today, got most the gold off the wreck Good Fortune. Quite the diver she is.

When Dimitrious makes his way over the five pirates, all five turn to look at the new... nuisance.
One of the pirates, the one with his back to the wall, reaches into his coin purse and pulls out five silver pieces (Recently retrieved by Calah).
He punctuates his sentence by throwing the silver pieces at Dimitrious's forhead.
I will... coin toss pay you... coin toss to leave us alone. coin toss.

Meanwhile across the bar, a middle aged barmaid wonders over to where Arjun is sitting. Seeing Arjun's glass near empty she says, What'l you be havin' love? The mead, the grog, or something harder?

ahh how to make an intro, its all about first impressions ya know...Well this seems like the kind of place noro would frequent and probably is already know by more than a few sailors in Port peril, (and i don't mean that way you dirty minded fellas)

outside the tavern there seems to be some heated words between a guy and some woman with a slight lisp.

patrons inside can hear something about oweing money.

Listen Noro, the boss says you haven't paid him his percentage of the earnings. now you can pay us now, or we can take it from ya the hard way. the guys says.

Get the hell out of my way, you musht be shome real dumbassh to actuallky think you even look threatening, look you already started to pisshed your pants, you shtupid....ahhhh srew it.

the next sound heard is fist meeting face and the ambiance of the room is broken by a local street thug flying through the front door bleeding profusely from his nose.

he tries to scramble to his feet when a woman enters the doorway. going shomewhere? ya little pissh-ant. she says as she cracks her knuckles ready to finish the job.

the woman is dressed in what appears to be common dock worker clothing but of a heavier leather material possibly doubling as armor. she carries no weapons.

she goes up to the now cowering "thug" and grabs him by the shirt and cocks her fist ready to pond his face.

good place to intervene if anyone wants to otherwise Noro pounds him and tosses his unconscious body back out into the street

"Noooo let them fight! This is the entertainment of tonight!"

With the distraction from the brawl Calah leans over to Doreen and says:
"Look girl you seem nice, but unfortunately I cannot get away from these men. They once killed one of my friends on board when I first refused to dive. So unless all five of them are knocked out or killed this evening, I will not be able to be free without risking the lives of my remaining friends. But if you could help me I would be eternally grateful."

"Mead." Arjun puts a copper piece on the barmaid's tray and sits back to finish his current mug, only to have a cacophony of noise and commotion burst through the door in the shape of the female brawler. Not 10 seconds pass before a lovely lady is sitting in his lap, asking all of the right questions!

He puts an arm around her and points with his mug to the melee in the taproom. "That I am, lass. It will be a lively evening, by the looks of it. They are taking bets on who can pummel each other the most proficiently. I would put my money on flint-face." He gestures to the female. "Her blood is running hot, and she seems like she knows how to use those fists."

With the commotion over, the five pirates sit back at their chairs and notice that their beers are almost empty. Too lazy to get more beers on their own they don't mind someone else getting their beers.

One of the uglier ones, Bill, says:"Yeah Calah its your turn, go fetch us some more beer! And no running away you hear, you know what happens!"

Calah stands up and walks with Doreen towards the bar. She "accidentally" kicks out the chair of Bill. He falls down on the floor with the remainder of his beer spilling on him. This to great amusement of his companions.

After I fed him his own balls the other men didn't dare to try something similar. Heck, some actually showed me some respect afterwards. But the majority of the crew are like those five. Stupid, greedy idiots. They are not my crew mates and I am not part of the real crew, I am merely their captive, their slave. The only reason I was not keelhauled was because I am their best diver."

They arrive at the bar and Calah yells:"Barkeep! Give me two of your best beer for me and the pretty lady here. I also need four of the cheapest piss that you still call beer that you have."

While the barkeep is pouring the beers she continues to Doreen: "I cannot get away from them unless they do not know I had anything to do with it or if those five are dead without anyone witnessing me partaking in it. I still have some friends among the other slaves on board and the captain will have them raped and tortured just to get back at me. I cannot do anything for the risk of word reaching the ship of my actions."

Looking at the halfling she says "I am not for one to get anyone in the same predicament as I am in. If you can't help me, best ignore me."

Calah sighs audibly and her head hangs a little. You can clearly see she does not like her current predicament. She has a tough shell and for good reason.

Still she looks at Doreen and smiles. It is not often a pleasent looking female gave her some friendly attention for no reason. Still, she is more than a little suspicious, why would this woman go through this trouble for her, what are her motives. Perhaps she could help her, but what would she want in return. She wasn't the first time who was interested in her for her diving skills.

"So tell me, what brings you to the bar? And why are you so interested in me?"

Calah has not heard Dimitrious ask for the beer. Her attention is focussed elsewhere. On her thoughts and Doreen.

One of the bar maids accepts the silver piece and hands Dimitrious two pints of ale. She winks as she does so.

Doreen stares at the halfling and laughs. "There are no 'miladies' here, shorty! Here, take the beer and scram. I'm trying to have a conversation here." She then turns to Calah and goes on "Your call, but if I were in your shoes I'd be out the door already. Trust me, it's dog eat dog out there. Your 'friends' wouldn't think twice about you. Me, I'm just looking for a job. Turns out my last captain had some debts, and ended up paying with his head.... now I have to join a new crew." She leans back against the counter and takes a long look at the people gathered at the tavern. "I don't like staying put for long, you know." She looks at Calah again. "And just so we're clear, I'm not interested in you. You asked for help. I shouldn't even bother, it'll probably blow up on my face later..."

Amen to that. she adds to Doreen's comment about a dog-eat dog world raising her rum some as a little toast.

she does not try to intervene in the conversation, she knows that in places like these most conversation are best left unheard, unless you want to end up dead.

Still facing the bar Calah says: "Hmmm perhaps you are right. I can tell you for sure that those guys are part of a useless crew. They haven't had a proper plunder in ages if it wasn't for me."

Calah leans forward to passionately whisper in Doreens ear: "Shame you are not interested in me though, I'm sure we could have some fun together..."

Calah pulls back and also leans against the counter, once again a cold shell. "Now if you want to find a proper crew you need to make a name for yourself. I would think that us bashing up my former crewmates would stir things up. Maybe that brawler girl would like to join in on the fun. I think they still have some gold in their pockets we could split. What do you say to that suger? Ready to be a real pirate?" She says as she winks at Doreen.

Doreen backs away as Calah whispers at her ear. "Whoa, back off, you're not my kind of fun." The rest of the proposal sounds even less appealing. "Listen, you wanted away from those guys, I bought you some time alone. I'm not offing a bunch of sailors just 'cause you need someone to do it–hell, I don't need the bad blood. Plus, what are you talking about, 'real pirate'? I am a real pirate, and you're just an unlucky slave who can't tell when to run from when to fight." She points to Calah, Dimitrious and Noro, and continues. "So you and your friends can go pick a fight with your crewmates while I'll take my beer over there and watch you fall flat on your face."

Doreen walks away angrily, pushing people out of her way and sitting down at the bar a few feet from Calah. She looks to her side and sees an elf asking for something non-alcoholic. Looking up, she blurts out to no one in particular "What's wrong with these people?"

Observing Doreen's tantrum Calah sighs and smiles to herself. "I guess she was a little too young and innocent for this after all." She softly says to herself. In a louder voice: "Oh well, I'm sure she will grow up soon enough once she's been a part of a real crew or gang-pressed. I mean who does not love a good bar brawl." she says as she winks over at Noro.

To Dimitrious she says "Thanks for the concern short stuff, but unless you can convince a couple of strong people here to help, I will go back and bide my time."

Calah gathers the beers, spits in each one, and makes the two trips necessary to bring all the beers over to her table.

Its a shame this plan failed, there will be others. She will just have to bide her time a little longer to get away from those idiots. They all deserve painful deaths for what they did to her over the years.

The five pirates at the table are oblivious what goes on at the bar and are just pleased to have some more beer to drink when Calah returns.

****MAJOR PLOT POST****
It is dark and your head is pounding, rhythmic creaking is in the air. The splash of waves can be heard some place near. A musty smell permeates the air and you are unsure of the events of last night.

For those who have spent a lot of time at sea:
For some of you your surroundings are at least some what familiar. The noise and the rocking mean you are on a ship, truly salty sailors can determine that based on the period of the rocking this ship is of a decent size and the seas are relatively calm.

For our Landlubbers:
The constant rocking is wrecking havoc on your stomach, A DC 5 fort save is required to stave off being sickened. As best you can tell you are on some sort of ship.

DC 3 Perception:
Most of your belongings are missing, as you pat yourself down in the dark you realize you are missing everything but the clothes on your back.

A burst of light enters the room as a hatch is pulled open. A tall man with a dark braided beard stands before you, his right hand grasps a long whip. He is joined by 6 men each with a stern look and griping a cudgel tightly.
The man with a whip bellows in a deep accent,
Still abed with the sun over the yardarm?
On your feet, ye filthy swabs! Get up on
deck and report for duty before Cap’n
Harrigan flays your flesh into sausage skins
and has Fishguts fry ye up for breakfast!

He cracks his whip in the air as if to punctuate his speach.

It seems that you have been press ganged and this man standing before you wants you up on deck. It is here that our adventure truly begins.

Calah looks around to see who else is lucky enough to be on the ship with her.
Are her pirate friends from the other boat on the ship as well? Do we still have our armor on or is that gone as well?

Seeing the couple of familiar faces Calah walks over to Doreen and offers her a hand to stand up. She smiles at Doreen but whinces due to the headache while saying "Well it seems I got rid of those idiot pirates after all, though it was not in the way I had hoped. Don't fret, I had nothing to do with this."

Her faces turns more serious as she continues "Best keep your head low and do as he says for now. We wouldn't want that pretty face get ruined by that filth's whip now would we." Calah throws a wink with the last sentence.

Male Human Expert 1 Warrior 1

@ Calah: Armor is gone for now, as are your former captors.
For group decisions we will use the rule of two. If one person proposes an action and a second person seconds it I will assume that is what the group does. In this case Calah seems to be proposing keeping heads low and doing as told for now. With a second I will assume that is what the group is doing. This is to keep PbP from bogging down. For truly important decisions I will allow everyone an opportunity to post.

And meet him you shall He replies to Doreen tersely (Only that high diplomacy saved you from his whip).

As you are ushered up to the main deck, you begin to take in your surroundings. Figures cluster around the ship’s mainmast, looking up at the higher deck on the stern, where two figures stand. One of them
is a broad, muscular Garundi man with a shaven head, a long beard bound with gold rings, and an eye patch—clearly the captain. The other is a younger, balding man with a long black ponytail, wearing a long coat and
carrying a well-used cat-o’-nine-tails.

Once all of the newly impressed sailors are on deck the captain addresses the crew
Glad you could join us at last! Welcome to the Wormwood!
My thanks for ‘volunteering’ to join my crew. I’m Barnabas
Harrigan. That’s Captain Barnabas Harrigan to you, not that
you’ll ever need to address me. I have only one rule—don’t
speak to me. I like talk, but I don’t like your talk. Follow that
rule and we’ll all get along fine.
Oh, and one more thing. Even with you new recruits, we’re
still short-handed, and I aim to keep what crew I have. There’ll
be a keelhaulin’ for anyone caught killin’ anyone. Mr. Plugg! If
you’d be so kind as to make pirates out of these landlubbers,
it’ll save me having to put them in the sweatbox for a year and
a day before I make pies out of ’em.

At the end of his speech, the captain walks away, leaving behind the man with the cat-o’-nine-tails. This is Mister Plugg, the Wormwood’s first mate. He looks down at you and smiles unpleasantly.

Mr. Plugg barks out Sailors some of you may already be, you will have time to prove that. For right now it is time for me to decide what your fate onboard will be. I need a new rigger aboard, someone who can climb fast and handle themselves on the mast, riggers have it easier than most. The first one to the top shall be my new rigger.

I will need a two climb checks, whomever has the highest total will make it to the top first. Getting less then a 5 on either check means falling off the mast and onto the deck and taking 1d6 damage.
