Anton Klasnic |
Anton stops for a moment when Janos and Drosil spot the coins. He dismounts and as he slowly walks the perimeter of the group, strings his bow and checks his arrows are in place and easily accessible in the quiver.
Just call me paranoid. he says with a grin to Janos as he passes by him.
He scans the treeline, checking both with his eyes and that part of him that can see the darkness in men's hearts, wondeirng if there is anything out there, just beyond his vision waiting in ambush.

Also, Detect Evil??
Dantrian Almaeus |
Dantrian takes the note from Mosswick, written in Petros' own hand, and takes out his booklet of formulae. He folds a pair of sharp creases into the note, so that it fits within the confines of the stiff cover of the booklet, then tucks it in at the back with a few other similarly folded items.
As the group travels from the schloss to the wood, Dantrian is more quiet than usual. Occassionally though, he answers an unvoiced question of Mosswick's aloud, which perhaps suggests the two are conversing throughout the ride.
His own alarm rising with that of the others', Dantrian slips from his horse as well and begins leading it by the reins. Mosswick retreats up into the canopy overhead, following the group from above.

Perception (Mosswick): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
DM Jelani |
The coins are normal gold Ustalavic marks, neither particularly new or old. Anton can sense no evil within the range of his spell. Mosswick telepathically reports lots of webbing in the canopies of the trees over that way (the same way the trail leads). As all of this is happening, the Five begin to hear noise coming from that same direction. It sounds like a woman shouting, and then they clearly hear "HELP! HELP ME!" screamed in a feminine voice.
B'yelka Morfaine |
Unphased by this expected turn of events B'yelka says, "This is familiar. I wonder if we will find more Twisted Kin lost out here." I suppose a country has to earn a reputation just like any artist.
Janos Ardeal |
"And this is why it's deadly to follow strange voices in the swamp. The same seems to be true of the forests as well." Janos pockets the coin he is holding. "Well, let's follow and spring the trap on the trappers."
He draws his sword and moves to follow the line of coins.
Perception, take 10: 10 + 16 = 26
Dantrian Almaeus |
The gold matters little, Mosswick. And the last two spidery things we faced each nearly killed one or all of us. Pursuing the voice crying out is a risk and risks should not be taken heedlessly.
Dantrian prepares himself for expected trouble by quaffing a number of extracts. He then glances at Anton, "Perhaps the trail goes unused due to the inherent dangers of walking it. Dangers not unlike the phase spider we faced in the swamp." He glances around for a moment before adding, "Still, I suppose the merest chance someone might legitimately be in need of our aid warrants investigation." He then follows in pursuit of Janos, one hand holding the rein of his horse and the other now wielding his heavy mace.
Whatever we find ahead, your chiefest concern should be your own safety, Mosswick. Keep your distance should this result in violence.

You're right Dantrian. If someone is lost out there, no one but us is going to find them.

DM Jelani |
The trail leads the Five a few hundred yards off the hunting trail. After a few moments the crying of the woman's voice stops. The soft haunting melody of a harp drifts through the air to replace it. It emanates from a ruined stone watchtower in a small clearing at the edge of sight. The tower stands about three stories tall; blood ivy and grayish green lichen blanket the stonework of the tower’s crumbling exterior, while passing winds whistle softy through its darkened, gaping windows.
Everyone give me will saves. This is a sonic mind-affecting charm effect.
You must move at normal speed into the tower.

That music... It's wonderful..! Anton says distantly and starts wondering into the undergrowth toward it's source.
B'yelka Morfaine |
Seeing the boys steel themselves, B'yelka follows suit. She chants and sings weaving the songs into spells.
Good Hope for all, Blur for Janos if that's OK ☺
Will Save: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 2 = 17
As the Six move toward the ruins she catches the seductive rolling of harp chords. Sounding like water running over rocks, B'yelka murmurs agreement to Anton's appraisal of the music. She steps drops the reins to her horse and moves towards the tower.
Can I have Well Versed back, just for a minute? lol
Drosil the Grey |
Will Save (Charmed Life 1/3, Good Hope): 1d20 + 1 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 1 + 2 + 2 = 21
Drosil reins in and, seeing the others transfixed by the harp, dismounts and attempts to break Anton free of the enchantment. "Anton! Wake up, man - pull yourself together!"
Shake Anton out of it as a standard action.
Janos Ardeal |
Will Save (GH): 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 2 = 7 +1 vs. Arcane spells
Janos' elven ears pick up on the music and he smiles. "Well, that's beautiful." He begins walking towards the tower.
DM Jelani |
Eh....good hope after you know you’re making a save is a little cheese I think. There was time for minutes long buffs before I posted about the save. Also the radius is three hundred feet from the tower so you’d technically be saving before you even saw the tower.
So in this case, no good hope/blur first.
B'yelka Morfaine |
No worries :)
"Huh? Oh! Drosil!" B'yelka comes around and gives Drosil a hug, thanks for saving her from whatever this thing is. And a plan seeds in her mind.
"Play along. Whatever it is may not be aware that we aren't in it's thrall. Shall we walk in like complacent zombies?" She shuffles along towards the ruins, casting a spell as she walks.
Good Hope
Anton Klasnic |
Not all of us are used to the stage, B. Anton whispers with a smile. I fear my zombie impersonation will be somewhat lacking. I will cover you from afar. Anton says, moving toward the noise but skirting to one side.
Anton Klasnic |
I think it's a good plan B'yelka, just that Anton would blow it and I think he is best placed at a distance providing covering fire rather than stuck in the thick of it.
Drosil the Grey |
Drosil smiles at B'yelka's suggestion and begins moving forward with her, seemingly entranced.

Long, taut strands of shimmering silk fill the ruined tower’s interior, forming an intricate pattern running from floor to ceiling. Half a dozen large cocoonlike shapes hang from the ceiling, suspended above the tower’s hard-packed dirt floor. In the far corner, between two larger chunks of rubble, a wide burrow opens into the ground. As soon as anyone enters the tower, the music goes silent.
B'yelka Morfaine |
Standing somewhat behind Drosil the Diva pretends to 'come to' as the music stops. "What? Where am I?" She scans the room looking for the source of the music. She does this while fervently hoping whatever was making the music doesn't hate real competition. Or even worse, it wants accompaniment
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Janos Ardeal |
Janos looks around at the tower. "Well, it appears it might be another spider-like creature. Perhaps we should try to draw it in here? Tear down some of these cocoons and I bet it will come to us." Janos casts a spell, making his skin craggy and bark-like.
Cast Barkskin. +2AC
Anton Klasnic |
Seeing that the source of the noise emanates from a tower in the middle of the trees, Anton stalks back over to his friends.
Something's down there and it wants us to follow. Does anyone know what create such a siren song?
B'yelka Morfaine |
B'yelka feigns indignation, "Why Dear Anton I thought you knew what I create such a Siren's Song!" She looks at Janos, "And it seems you don't want to play along with any ruse." With an overwrought sigh, she adds, "Then you may as well cut down some of these.. . eggs? food? Whatever they are."
Janos Ardeal |
Knowledge, Dungeoneering (GH): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 6 + 2 = 23
Janos studies the cocoon shapes and then the tunnel, seemingly dug by whatever resides here. "It's possible, B'yelka. This thing could have ambushed the Way as they were traveling through." He shrugs. "But whatever it is, it isn't natural. Let's see what happens."
Without further warning, Janos draws a throwing axe and flings it at the nearest cocoon, looking to cut the strands of webbing.

As the Five are observing the tower and discussing what to do, there is a sudden rustling sound from the hole inside the tower. A massive thing heaves itself up from the depths. The bloated white segments of a maggot’s body erupt in a torso of mixed feminine and insectile features. Pale humanoid skin and carapace meld together beneath a face with segmented eyes and mandibles chittering a song of discordant alien clicks and hisses, as overlong carapace claws weave cords of thick webbing between them.

Janos Ardeal |
Janos' eyes widen as the huge monster comes into view. "Damn, that is ugly. It really should stick to playing music." He concentrates to whisper one of the secrets of the oaks. His sword tips like it's weighted at the end.
"Spread out!" The Ranger darts to the side, waiting for the right opening.

Inspire Courage. Total of +4 to hit and +4 to damage (with Good Hope). Blur on Dantrian

Drosil, who seems to have learned his lesson about running headlong into the waiting arms of whatever creature might be attacking them, follows Janos' instructions and moves to the left.
