Male Drow Magus (Kensai) 1, Perception +4, init +3, FORT/REF/WILL 3/3/4, Arcane Pool 4/5, HP 6/10

Argent, infuriated, attacks the gnome who damaged him.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Quin unleashes another ray of frost at a gnome...

attack1d20 ⇒ 10, damage1d3 ⇒ 1

Vrek fires at the wounded gnome but it deflects the arrow off of its shield.
Leiaf hits the gnome with a dart of acid. since most acid spells are conjurations I will assume that these don't require SR checks.
Argent lashes out at the gnome but it ducks under the blade.
Quin shoots a ray of frost at the gnome but it hit the wall behind it.
Liante fires her xbow at the wounded gnome but it bounces off its shield. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 151d8 ⇒ 31d100 ⇒ 39
Shelquet stabs his dagger at the gnome and hits the gnome under the chin dropping it. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 221d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 31d100 ⇒ 75

The gnome lashes out at Argent 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 231d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 31d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 171d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 but his shield spell limits the damage.3 damage
Out of the darkness a leather clad gnome appears behind the gnome that struck Argent and stabs the other gnome in the back.1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 151d4 + 1d8 ⇒ (1) + (2) = 3 The stab is a glancing blow but it surprises the other gnome. the leather clad gnome signals "Let us finish this. I have a proposition for you all."

Round 9
Move: Lieaf moves 20' forward

Standard: Acid Dart(ranged touch): 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 + 1 = 13
Dmg: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 1 = 7
Blur Miss %: 1d100 ⇒ 52
Note this is Lieaf's 4th acid dart

Lieaf is surprised by the appearance of this turncoat ally, but is more focused on getting to Argent before the one remaining hostile gnome finishes him off. He hustles forward as fast as his tired legs will let him and throws more acid at their diminutive foe as he goes.

sigh so several posts i made yesterday were eaten... i was going to get 3rd round of concentration from detect magic. I wouldn't have fired yet.

Female Drow Alchemist (Vivisectionist) 1

The feel of blood and viscera running over my fingers... so soothing... Ok, focus Shelquet. One more to go. Maybe I can knock this one out so I can see what its insides look like as they operate. Shelquet thrusts her dagger at the remaining Gnome... Attack and damage, sneak attack if applicable: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 231d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 31d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Invigored by the feel of warm blood on her flesh, she strikes with verve at the Gnome and lands a hit

Male Tellarite

Seeing the leather clad gnome appear and join them, Vrek chuckles. Despite the ineffectivness of his bow shots, he's starting to find this comedic, and the gnome joining them is just another fun twist
He signals back Love to hear it...

He fires once more, maybe THIS time the damn thing will actually do some good..

To hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
dmg: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Percentile: 1d100 ⇒ 92

Male Drow Magus (Kensai) 1, Perception +4, init +3, FORT/REF/WILL 3/3/4, Arcane Pool 4/5, HP 6/10

Something must be amiss here. How can I be fighting this poorly?

Argent moves to flank the gnome who wounded him and strikes.

I really need a hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Leiaf fires an acid dart but shoots above the gnomes head.
Liante finishes concentrating on the gnome and sees a faint aura of illusion magic.
Shelquet stabs the gnome with her dagger. 1d100 ⇒ 50no sneak attack, also, sneak attack damage doesn't receive any additional bonuses
Vrek fires another arrow but it misses the gnome.
Quent fires another ray of frost at the gnome but misses the gnome.1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 51d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 191d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

The turncoat stabs at the armored gnome and it falls down. 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 261d4 + 1d8 ⇒ (2) + (3) = 51d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 81d4 ⇒ 4
The turncoat flashes hand signals "There are three more guards, the sheriff, and two pack lizards waiting in the tunnel. I was sent to check on these three. If I don't report back immediately, they will come in force. I assume you are from the drow stronghold. These gnomes are planning on gather a force of gnome warriors from the surrounding communities to throw off the yoke of the drow taxes."

Round 10. Argent's shield spell is expiring next round. You have one round of actions to take before the gnome must leave

Spoiler:

Liante: (oracle spells used:x)

Argent: 3/10(spells used: shield)
Vrek: (bard spells used:x)

Firstly, Leiaf moves up behind Argent and casts cure light wounds.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Next he addresses the turncoat gnome in undercommon as he stoops to loot the corpse of one of the fallen. And what do you hope to gain by turning on your kin so quickly? What price do you want to your treachery?

Assuming the gnome's answers are halfway believable and not totally outrageous...

Very well, report back to your fellows and tell them you have found a cache of supplies ahead - the others are there now and they should come at once.

Ok, time to set up a two minute ambush guys...

Male Tellarite

Vrek tries to get a read on the gnome as Leiaf's question is answered.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

He also looks for a place to hide since it seems they're going for an ambush rather than retreat
Stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

the gnome is speaking in drow sign language. Combat rounds are still going. You have one round to discuss matters with the gnome before he leaves which equates to 48 hours of real time starting now.

As Leiaf starts to talk, the gnome frantically signs Use sign! Do you want them to hear you! In answer to your question, I don't much care for the mayor or the sheriff. I think they are all weak. I heard a whisper that if I took a job going with the sheriff, then I would be granted a grand opportunity. I assume this is it.

Vrek, you do not "hear" any dishonesty in the gnomes words. Also, the caravan is out in the cavern so I'll keep your stealth roll for your approach.

He must serve the drow if he has been taught our signs... No drow would permit himself to teach it unwillingly.

Liante signs to the gnome, Who do you serve little one? We are here to bring strength and take away the weak.

Quin remains silent...

Male Tellarite

Vrek nods to the others, giving his silent opinion that this one is on the level... at least, as much as anyone ever is.

Female Drow Alchemist (Vivisectionist) 1

Shelquet eyes the little Gnome intently. I wonder what HE looks like on the inside? Perhaps after he has exhausted whatever utility he may have, we will find out...

Liante wrote:

Liante signs to the gnome, Who do you serve little one? We are here to bring strength and take away the weak.

The gnome signs, I served no one before but I would hear whispers after I plunged my blade into flesh before. The whispers had no name. They just said I would find opportunity here. The gnome looks over its shoulder worriedly, I must get back to the others. I will position myself next to the sheriff. You must strike quickly or they will get away and warn the other gnome communities At that, the gnome goes creeping back around the corner and into the tunnel proper.

okay, what are your plans? every additional round you take will change the layout of the battle field against you. For responses, I'm counting every 48 hours as one round.

Male Tellarite

Vrek is happy to let others make tactics, but reminds his siblings through sign that he can prepare a grease spot for the oncoming foes if they just tell him where best to lay it

Male Drow Cave Druid 1; Init +1; Hp 11/11; AC 17 Touch 11 Flatfooted 16, Fort: +4 Ref: +1 Will: +7(+9vs ecnhantment spells or affects), CMB -1 CMD: 10; Initiative +1; Perception +11

Okay, so what's everyone's thoughts on how to play this? How many rounds prep time should we gamble with?

Here's my suggestion: Argent and Shelquet hide themselves in a forward position. The rest of us hide and take cover amongst the crates of the cache. The gnomes enter the chamber and Leiaf, Quin, Liante and Vrek start attacking them from cover at range ( since we are all pretty much horrible in melee). Then Shel and Argent attack from the rear, flanking the last gnome in the formation hopefully. Its not fancy - eager to hear ideas from everybody else.

Also, might be a good idea if we remind each other what we've got left to bring to this fight. Leaif has three acid darts, magic stone (whoo hoo I can throw stones at them!) and obscuring mist, which he could convert into a 1 rnd summons - which might slow their advance and buy us another round of missile fire. I'm out of healing.

Finally, DM Grey, would you rather us move this sort of conversation over to discussion, or is talking strategy fine here in gameplay?

Leaif uses round 1 to cast magic stone on a handful of pebbles.

Male Tellarite

For speed's sake, I'm just going to say 'yes' to your plan. Feel free to click my profile, but my big 'spells' are grease and charm person.

Vrek will cast grease from his hiding spot as soon as the foes come into the ambush site hoping to trip up their middle and break them apart.

Liante calls guidance upon herself as she steadies her crossbow, ready to shoot the first enemy to come into her sights.
Guided Readied Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 of bloody course lol

Female Drow Alchemist (Vivisectionist) 1

I concur with Leaif. I'm ready to eviscerate some Gnomes! I'm curious though, are they Gnomes or Svirfneblin?

round 12
As you all inch forward back around the main tunnel, you see the turncoat talking to one gnome while one watches the entrance. they are not coming to you. on the map they are between the tunnel you are in and the one leading to the spider den. A few other gnomes are handling the pack lizards. Once everyone is in position, Liante fires a bolt but it misses and startles one of the pack lizards. As the sheriff turns to look at Liante, the turncoat stabs it in the back.

round 13. everyone is up! Quin, Shelquet, Argent, & Leiaf need to roll stealth. Still have Vrek's stealth check.

Stealth(including ACP): 1d20 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (11) + 1 - 3 = 9

Leiaf sighs inwardly as their plan to flank the gnomes falls apart instantly, and makes a half hearted attempt to hide against the irregular wall of the tunnel. He assumes the sheriff is the biggest threat, and begins to conjure a denizen of the deep caverns to strike him down.

Round 12
Full round action: Cast Summon Nature's Ally I - conjure a giant centipede to flank the sheriff with the traitor.

Male Tellarite

Vrek stays very carefully hidden, but will wait till the traitor attacks, then tries a grease spell under the other deep gnome foes.

Reflex DC 16

As a giant centipede appears before the sheriff, the turncoat stabs the sheriff under his arm pit but the sheriff is still standing. vrek sings a tune causing grease to appear under one of the feet of the gnome toward the east. The centipede bites the sheriff in the leg causing a negligible injury but the gnome must take a moment to fight off the poisonous effects. The remainder of the party remains hidden waiting to strike.

The sheriff turns on the centipede and vanquishes it with one clean stroke. The gnome under the grease tries to stand but falls, then he starts to crawl toward the edge of the grease away from the fight. The other two gnomes aim their swords at Leiaf and Vrek. both of you need to make fortitude saves (Leiaf gets a +8 alch bonus) on dc 12 you are blind

round 13 over. Round 14 is up! everyone is up. I'm waiting until the majority of the party has acted before assuming someone would give up his/her hiding

Fort save VS DC 12: 1d20 + 4 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 8 = 18

Leiaf swings his spear valiantly at the vile little creature attacking him.

5' step to wherever will provide an ally a flank to move into.
Spear: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13
1d8 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

What has happened here? It feels like we are the ones getting ambushed! The plan was to use spells etc to keep the gnomes AT RANGE for as long as possible, yet somehow we are instantly embroiled in up close fighting. And doesn't grease cover more than one square? I'm sure Vrek's intention was to catch more than one gnome, or at least put a barrier between us an them that they would have to cross before they could start swinging swords at us. Also, Argent and Shelquet drank the gnomebane too(not listed in the status spoiler).

Male Tellarite

That was kind of my intention, though I may not have worded it well.
Ah well, fort save, here goes...

Fort: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 12

Vrek's eyes blur, but only for a moment. He begins to sing, inspiring courage in his allies even as he slashes at his foe.

Inspire Courage up, +1 to hit and dmg for allies
Sword hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Dmg: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

Female Drow Alchemist (Vivisectionist) 1

GM, I presume my Mutagen is still in effect? This will determine Shelquet's actions regarding combat.

Shelquet: mutagen is still in effect. lasts 10 minutes per level.

Quin will keep hidng

Leiaf moves up and takes the place of his recently departed centipede and stabs at the sheriff but fails to penetrate his armor. Vrek begins to sing a song and readies his sword there are no enemies within striking distance so I'll turn the sword attack into a readied action The remainder of the party continues to hide. The turncoat, with Leiaf's help, stabs the sheriff in the back again causing him to stagger.

The gnome to the east finally crawls off of the grease and stands up. The northern gnome moves behind the turncoat and stabs the turncoat in the back. 2 damage The western gnome's form begins to appear streaked and moves toward the party.

Round 14. Everyone is up. Leiaf & Vrek are in the open. Everyone else is still hiding.

Lieaf strikes again at the sheriff, hoping to distract him enough for the turncoat to land a fatal blow. So intent was he on taking down his opponent that he didn't notice that he was rapidly falling behind enemy lines, and that most of his siblings hadn't yet joined the fray.

Spear thrust vs. Sheriff: 1d20 - 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 + 2 + 1 = 17
Dmg: 1d8 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 + 1 = 5

Female Drow Alchemist (Vivisectionist) 1

Can I move to flank the Sheriff or is it possible? Just curious about my options.

Shelquet: as Leiaf and the turncoat are currently flanking the sheriff, without another person to assist there are no other flanking options.

Female Drow Alchemist (Vivisectionist) 1

Ah, my mistake. Can you GMPC me for today? I've been feeling lightheaded and nauseous for a few days and after I post in my campaigns I'm running, I'm going to try to find out what is going on.

Leiaf stabs the sheriff through the heart and it slumps down off his spear. The other gnomes see the death and run off into the depths of the underdark.
out of initiative
The turncoat smiles at Leiaf and signs "You, you have the power to lead. I will follow you. I am known as Iverna Already-Has-Your-Knife but others call me 'knivy Ivy' for short." Looking around at the carnage, she smiles "What do you command of me, master Leiaf?"

Leiaf's chest swells with pride as he kills the sheriff and Ivy speaks of his leadership. This is immediately followed by a moment of panic as she asks him what to do next. uhh... He looks to his siblings for guidance.

Ivy, where do you think those other gnomes are headed? What do you know of Fastervault?"

Meanwhile, looting the sheriff with detect magic. Did they leave their pack lizards?

Knivy Ivy shrugs her shoulders, "The two that went west will either die or end up at one of the gnomish outposts. The one that went east will either die or end up back at Fastervault." Knivy nods her head toward the cave with the spider hole and signs, "The pack lizard went in that cave."

Quindavotos watches carefully from the shadows...

Male Tellarite

Vrek fights a chuckle at mention of Leiaf's 'obvious' leadership. "Any goodies in the pack lizards that maybe of use to us?"

Ivy, answer my siblings questions. I'm going to go retrieve those lizards. They will be useful in moving this stash we have found.

Handle Animal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Afterwards, he asks the gnome some questions of his own. Do you think you can track and kill that one gnome that headed east? Could you reach Fastervault on your own? Do they know you there? What can you tell us of their defences?

Ivy wipes the blood from her dagger before answering in broken undercommon, "No caches around here. The lizard was carrying supplies for our trip. Tracking is not one of my strong points but I could give it a shot. Fastervault is a few days away making it a dangerous trip alone. The primary defenses would be a militia in times of need but I'm not sure what else there would be. There is no standing army."
I emailed a map of Fastervault to everyone. Let me know if you didn't get it. What is the plan now?

Male Drow Cave Druid 1; Init +1; Hp 11/11; AC 17 Touch 11 Flatfooted 16, Fort: +4 Ref: +1 Will: +7(+9vs ecnhantment spells or affects), CMB -1 CMD: 10; Initiative +1; Perception +11

Leiaf leads the pack lizards back to the cache and starts loading up the gnome bane and as much rations as they can carry. Hmm, from you description Ivy it doesn't sound like there's much In the way of fortifications, so not much to be gained by trying to have you slip back into to town alone for a bit of sabotage at this point. You'll stay with us for now.

To the others: Well siblings? Rendezvous with our main force or try to track and kill this lone fleeing gnome before he gets to Fastervault. He can't report more than a small drow scouting party ( and Ivy's betrayal), but it might still be enough to put them on alert. Of course these caverns might do the job for us and the whole thing might be a waste of time.

Male Tellarite

"Ivy, pleased to meet you, I'm Vrek," Vrek says smoothly, "Is there anything you can think of to sabotage? Do they have an armory somewhere? Or gaps in their protective walls that can be widened? Leiaf is right that it doesn't sound like it has many fortifications, but it's probably best to at least get a feel for those it does."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

"Also, you hear whispers? Interesting. We too, have a patron of sort, a powerful being who is of great use. I wonder if he speaks to you as well." The dark elf doubts the demon prince is behind these 'whispers' but it might help earn her loyalty faster if she thinks it possible.

"I'm no scout by nature so how well we can track our 'prey' is hard to say, but I think we should try anyway to find him. I prefer total surprise to anything else, and if he reports us it might make it harder to try to use 'diplomacy' later."
