The demons are coming. Can you stop them?

RED TEAM

Ever have one of those dreams where something horrible is coming towards you... but slowly? Because it's a dream, and everything is in slow motion? So you should be able to run away, but you can't. You can't run or move. And the horrible thing is coming towards you, drifting, floating, unhurried. Nightmare slow, as the scream rises in your throat.

The demon woman moves like that.

BLUE TEAM

The first clue that something was wrong, was the dead dwarf.

RED TEAM

The demon floats past you. You are, frankly, terrified that she might touch you... there's something intolerable about the thought of those strange soft hands. But she ignores you. For now.

She bends over the robed man on the floor. He screams in terror and tries to crawl away backwards.

BLUE TEAM

Three dead dwarves, actually. They've been in a fight. Two at the entrance to the safe house -- it's supposed to be hidden, or at least concealed, but there's a dwarf lying across the threshold.

What happened here? And where is Red Team?

RED TEAM

The dwarf is putting on his armor. (His very strange armor.) He's taking the pieces one by one out of a bag. The bag seems much too small to hold an entire suit of plate armor; presumably it is magical.

The dwarf pauses and frowns at the robed man on the floor. "Will you stop that? She's not going to hurt you. This time. She's just making sure that you're not having any second thoughts here." He turns away from the man to pull one of his boots on. It is a massive, heavy boot, with spikes. "Man up, little traitor. There's lots worse than Sissy here. And when you're around demons, whining and screaming is the last thing you want to do. Attracts their attention." The dwarf pulls the other boot on, then stands up and stretches. "Also, if you don't stop making all that noise, I'll break your kneecaps and then drag you to Drezen behind me."

Apparently the threat is plausible, because the robed man stops screaming. The demon leans over him and, very slowly, runs one furry hand down the side of his face. The robed man trembles, and tears run out of his eyes, but he makes no sound.

BLUE TEAM

The dead dwarves were Crusaders, once. But they've thrown away or cut off all holy symbols or regimental colors.

In your weeks of training, Corporal Nurrah has learned who can move quietly. "Don. Kyami. Through the door and down the hall, quietly. If there's anything there, report back. Don't get in any trouble."

Don nods solemnly, then pulls out his lucky coin and flips it, once. He frowns at the result then steps very carefully over the dead dwarf and onto the stairs leading down into the safe house. Kyami follows behind, trying to imitate Don's graceful sidling glide.

Kyami doesn't have ranks in Stealth, but with +3 from Dex she's the second stealthiest after Don.

RED TEAM

"I thought you said she would lay an egg in his brain, or something?" inquires the blond man. He is leaning against the room's only table, looking elegant and bored.

"I said she might. Don't think it'll be necessary, though." The dwarf is almost done donning his armor. He removes a helmet -- a very strange helmet -- from the bag, and lowers it carefully onto his head. "Give me a sec, here." The helmet's faceted eyes seem to glow. Its mandibles snap and clash. "Ah, yeah. Still working just fine... No, I'm pretty sure he's too scared to change his mind. Besides, I have a better idea."

The blond man arches an eyebrow. "Didn't you tell me one of those creatures laid an egg in your head once? How'd that work out for you, anyway?"

The dwarf grins. "Magnificently!" He's rummaging in the sack again. "One of Sissy's big sisters implanted an egg in my brain, and it hatched out a larva. I had to engage in mental combat with the worm for a day and a night. If I had lost, it would have eaten my brain and turned me into a mindless demon-thrall. But I won, so I got to control the larva."

The blond man's urbane smile is half gone. "Control it to do... what, exactly?"

"Eat the parts of my brain I didn't want, of course. Fear, most of all. 'We of the Brood fear nothing." It's more than just a slogan, Lewis. I'm literally incapable of feeling fear." The dwarf scrunches up his face thoughtfully. "Let's see, what else. It's been a while... Shame, of course. Empathy, caring about any other living thing. 'Love'. Things like that." The dwarf thumps his armored chest. "Lord Deskari, Lewis. The God Who Crawls This Earth." The dwarf makes a complex fluttering gesture with his fingers. "He's basically a giant genius insect. Right? One day he'll eat the world. I'm his loyal servant. So I reshaped my soul to make myself more like him."

The blond man -- Lewis -- has entirely lost his smile. He stares at the dwarf in open fascination. "You had a demonic worm eat pieces of your brain so you could become more like your giant bug-god?"

"Yup, exactly. It was a profound spiritual exercise, let me tell you." The dwarf reaches deeply into the bag. "Ah hah! There we go! Come to Papa!" He pulls out a long pole weapon -- a glaive. "Yeah, baby! At last my arm is complete again!"

On the floor, the robed man whimpers. The demon is still stroking his face, very softly.

RED TEAM SITREP PART ONE

You have been captured.

(It seemed so simple: the dwarves were obviously deserters, cultists heading back into the Worldwound. You won that fight without difficulty. Except the dwarves weren't alone.)

You are inside Safe House Hildegrin, very near the Border, a long day's march north of Kenabres. The safe house consists of a single large room underground with a smaller room adjacent; it has a concealed entrance and a concealed exit. It's supposed to be secret, a place of refuge for scouting parties retreating from the horrors of the Worldwound. It seems it wasn't so secret after all.

You are stuck to the walls: the demon has wrapped you in some sort of horrible sticky fluffy stuff. Treat this as a Web spell: you all have the Grappled condition, and must make either a CMB check or an Escape Artist check to break free. You have discovered the hard way that obvious struggling brings a swift and painful response from the dwarf.

RED TEAM SITREP PART TWO

There are four individuals inside the safe house with you.

The dwarf has been dressing and arming himself for the last few minutes. His armor is full plate, but made out of some sort of green metal. Bizarre spikes and spines protrude from it, so that he now looks like some sort of huge armored beetle. The dwarf is a more than competent melee fighter, as you have recently discovered. He is chatting with Lewis, but he keeps one eye on you captives.

Lewis is a blond human male around thirty years old. He wears white and looks cool and elegant. In your brief combat, Lewis did something that made you all feel weak and bad.

The robed man on the floor is currently being caressed by the demon woman. He doesn't seem to be enjoying it much. The dwarf calls the robed man "traitor" and treats him with amused contempt.

It's somehow hard to look directly at The demon woman; she seems to ripple in your sight somehow. She's more or less human in form but emaciated, skeletal. Her slim body is covered with pale grey-white fur. Her face consists only of a pair of huge, dark, eyes, faceted like an insect. She moves with eerie, dreamlike slowness.

It is possible to make Knowledge (Local) checks to see if you know any of these people, or Knowledge (planes) about the demon.

RED TEAM SITREP PART THREE

You still have your armor on. However, your weapons and gear -- including backpacks, spellbooks, and holy symbols -- have been removed. The dwarf gave them a cursory look and threw them all into a pile in the corner. A bit later Lewis strolled over and poked idly through them. If you had any gold pieces, or anything made of gold or jewelry, Lewis took them -- remove them from your inventory. He doesn't consider silver or copper worth the trouble of carrying around. From right to left, you are stuck to the wall in the following order:

Sergeant Kir -- Kir was injured but is conscious.

Lance-Corporal Benno -- The halfling is unconscious but still breathing.

Balek Nine-Fingered -- You have the Fatigued condition (-2 Str and Dex, cannot run or charge) but are otherwise uninjured.

Haruka Shiraboshi -- You have taken 6 points of damage.

Anycek -- took a hit but is still conscious.

Laurine -- seems uninjured.

BLUE TEAM SITREP

Blue Team arrived at the safe house a little while after Red Team. They've found the aftermath of Red Team's battle with the dwarves, and are now investigating further.

Don and Kyami have successfully slipped down to the bottom of the stairs. They are listening at the door. The door is partially open. They can hear everything that is said, but can only see part of what is happening inside. They have a good view of captured Red Team, but only occasional glimpses of the dwarf and his friends. Assume that you have rolled very well on Stealth, so that as long as you don't move, speak, or take any actions, you probably won't be noticed.

The rest of Blue Team is upstairs at ground level -- 20' up a crude shaft with a ladder, and then 10' along a short downwards sloping corridor. They can't hear anything, and are waiting for a report back from the two scouts.

"So, you removed love from your soul. There's no love in the Worldwound, then?"

The dwarf scoffs. "Of course there's love, if that's your thing. There's anything you please." The dwarf has started polishing his glaive, with careful diligent strokes. "Anything you please. That's the whole point, Lewis. In the New World, you're totally free. You can do anything you want, for as long as you want, with anyone you want, to anyone you want. As long as you're strong enough or smart enough to make it stick."

"Unless you get eaten alive by, I don't know, three-headed jackal demons or something?"

"The jackals are free too, Lewis." The dwarf runs one finger along the blade of his weapon -- very carefully -- and then smiles. "If you can't eat each other, then you're not really free, are you."

The demon woman stands up. She doesn't have a mouth, so it seems impossible that she could speak out loud. But somehow you hear her buzzing voice. I have completed the examination.

"And...?

He hates you, but he fears you much more. He loathes himself as a traitor, and torments himself imagining the consequences of his treason, but he cringes away from the thought of trying to turn back. He will serve you and Lord Deskari reliably as long as he is kept in a state of fear. The buzzing voice is impassive. Shall I implant him now?

"Ha! See? Told you." The dwarf puts the polishing rag away and stands up. "Nah. Like I said, I've had a better idea..."

Much as Takka hated waiting, he understood the importance of such. They needed information before simply charging in... and he was more than prepared for that. Sleek started to burble a little, but a slight prod from his rider, followed by calm rubbing on his side, calmed the slurk down.

"I do not feel at ease with this, Lady Nurrah. I worry for our compatriots ahead... I would feel better to place myself at the front, if permissible. Both my own armor and Sleek's will permit us to deal with the worst, should it come to that..."

Sleek paced a little in anxiousness as Takka turned to Sir Constantine. "How did this come about? The reports merely said to regroup with the Red Team... but to find all of this..."

Takka and Sleek can actually get to the room really quick, since Sleek has a climb speed of 30' (and Takka gets a +8 to stay on his back thanks to his... slime). Remarkably mobile for a big toad. Also, Takka has an AC of 19, where Sleek has an AC of 18 (sadly, the wooden armor messes with his mobility a tad), so they can actually absorb some punishment before needing backup. Also, with my Tactician ability, I can give someone flanking my target an extra 1d6 to their damage along with the +2 to attack. (It'll mean I skip my own attack, but Sleek can still bite!) I imagine that would synergize well with Constantine or anyone else with good to-hit.

Balek groans and stirs, wriggling slightly in the web but not yet trying to escape. His body is still weak and trembling. I doubt I could get free before that bug-dwarf skewered me, anyway. But doubtless our captors have weaknesses of their own. He nearly retches at the dwarf's description of the Worldwound.

But while his body may not be answering yet, his will is strong and his eyese are keen. Are these foes allies, then? Do they trust each other? Hardly

Sense Motive to see is any of these folk are particularly wary or careless, and whatever weak spots they might betray in how they look at and watch each other: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

And a Perception check to see if any ways out offer themselves: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

You have never heard of anything like this creature. Mind, the Abyss is endlessly fertile. There are lots of demons there, some common, some rare. It would take a lifetime to learn them all.

Bardic knowledge, no luck. And your bluff check was too low... Don is distracted and doesn't see your gestures. (His lips are moving as he mutters a prayer, and he's rubbing his lucky coin.) Note that a natural 1 on a Bluff to communicate will give the enemy a Perception check to spot you.

The room is 40' x 20' with a rather low ceiling. Laurine, Anycek and Haruka are within 25' of you; occasionally the blond man wanders that close.

You don't see their equipment (it's tossed in a corner at the far end of the room).

There's a wooden table in here, and a couple of long benches. You don't see any other exits (actually there are a couple, but you can't see them just now).

Duration is concentration, so it will blink off once you do something.

No - in my opinion, that is not a wise decision. @Kyami - please consider withdrawing that action so that you do not alert them to our presence. If they took out the entire Red Team without injury they either 1) have handled them without taking any or at least very little damage or 2) have powerful healing magics. Either of which indicates we are outclassed and requires extreme caution on our part. And DMDM does not pull punches.

Also: demon.

Personally, I would remain in my Happy Stealth Place and listen.

I'll agree on this one, I'd say we need to split them up somehow and deal with them one at a time... or not at all, if possible. I'd say luring one of them out, probably the demon or the bug-brain dwarf, would be the wisest move, and silently take them out if possible. At the very least, the less guards we on our prisoners, the better. Also, it seems like the dwarf on the floor may possibly be swayed... sure, he's scared, but if we can convince him that this is a bad spot to be in and that aiding us would help redeem him, we might be able to get another helping hand.

Also, perhaps out magic users could combine cantrips to create an illusion of some sort? I'm not sure what they have available, but if we could combine dancing lights, ghost sound and mage hand, we could make a very convincing illusion spell! Perhaps get the demon to come investigate? (If you can lure her/it under the ladder, me and Sleek can just belly flop on her :P +100 lbs of slimy toad should cause some decent damage)

for now I keep my course of action, looking aroung, without moving to much, and readying the healing judgement, till either battle breaks out or the situation gets that dire, that making an escape atempt can't make it worse

Otherwise, climbing safely down the ladder is at one-half speed. You can climb at full speed, but that requires a DC 5 climb check.

Lewis seems to feel it too. He shifts aside a little nervously, giving the demon plenty of room to move past. "Why do you call her 'Sissy', anyway?"

"Because her real name is IssidIoooIoooee, Captain-Doctor of the Third Swarm and journeyman Infestor. And that's a mouthful. Now watch this."

The demon has stopped facing Kir. Suddenly the bottom half of her face slits open and... unfolds. The furry grey flesh peels back to reveal a pulsing red and purple interior surrounded by wriggling mandibles.

Don is coming slowly and carefully, tiptoeing down the passage. When he steps outside the door, he bends over and puts his hands on his knees. He is trembling.

"Desna. Sweet Desna, Lady of the Way, thank you for guiding my steps to safety. Show me light in the darkness -- " He is frantically rubbing his lucky coin.

"Don! What's happening down there? Report!"

Male Kobold Oracle/1

Takka continues to grow nervous as neither of their scouts have reported back. Grinding his little fangs in his mouth, he ushers a silent command with his feet, moving Sleek forward to the mouth of the ladder case and peering in. "It is too quiet..."

The dark didn't bother him. He could see quite well in it, and slowly, he urged Sleek into the hole, clambering down as quietly, but swiftly, as he could manage. While his wooden armor made it decently easy to maintain and fix, it did clatter when he moved. He hoped none of the noise would attract any undue attention. He would urge Sleek forward to the bottom of the ladder, before holding at the bottom and waiting for any sign of trouble.

I'mma make a few checks, two for Sleek and Takka to keep quiet, one for Sleek to clamber down the ladder hole, and one for Takka to keep on Sleek's back...

Takka Stealth: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (6) + 6 - 1 = 11
Sleek Stealth: 1d20 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 2 - 1 = 11
Sleek Climb: 1d20 + 10 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 10 - 1 = 14
Takka Ride: 1d20 + 6 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 8 - 1 = 30

Reaching the bottom, Sleek let out a slight burble, causing Takka to quietly try and shush him with a pat to the head. Looking up ahead, Takka grabbed the lance off his back, ready to charge should the need arise.

From the writhing flesh of the demon's face, something emerges. It's a long, slender tongue or proboscis. It comes out... and out, and out, until it's longer than a man's arm. The tip of the thing's tongue sways like a cobra in front of Sergeant Kir's face.

Male Half orc Paladin 1 (redeemer archetype) AC 18 , HP 11/11, Int+1, Percep+1

He prays for divine protection shield spell and addresses Takka.

As he approaches the hole someoneemerges!

"What's going on down there?"

Takka, did our posts cross? Or do you still want to descend even as Don is coming out? (Note that you'll keep those rolls regardless.)

Corporal Nurrah is going to object to anyone going down until she's heard Don's report. "Stop, you fools! Don't charge in until we hear what he has to say!" She turns to Don. "Well? Spit it out quickly, man! What's going on down there?"

Do you obey Corporal Nurrah, ignore her and head inside, or do something else?

The swaying tongue suddenly shoots forward, 1d20 ⇒ 17 hitting Sergeant Kir directly in the forehead. He yells in pain and tries to struggle, then suddenly goes stiff. His eyes roll back in his head.

It'll take Don about three rounds to describe what he has seen: Red Team captured and disarmed but mostly still alive, layout of room, dwarf (brief description), other guys (description), demondemondemon. (He's pretty freaked.)

You can wait until he stops talking (well, he doesn't stop, but after three rounds he starts to repeat himself and Corporal Nurrah cuts him off) or do something else.

There's a pause. Then the tongue seems to pulse -- once, twice, three times.

There's another pause. Then, with a horrible slick sound, the tongue withdraws. There's a surprisingly tiny wound in Sergeant Kir's forehead; as you watch, a trickle of blood comes out of his nose and one ear. He seems to be still alive, though unconscious.

SGC waits for the first part.....

Cuts the man off....
"Our fellows are helpless against an enemy, no time to hear everything, Go for help in case Takka and I fall as well!"

Headed down nearly immediately.

Ugh... come on, really?

Takka is too busy trying to keep Sleek quiet, and Sleek is too busy staring at a bug on the ground to take notice of the yell... but looking up at SCG started to come down, Takka urged Sleek forward a bit, giving him room to safely arrive at the landing, speaking quietly up to him. "I'll shall charge in first. With enough surprise, we should catch them off balance enough to end this quickly!"

Lewis says, "Was that..."

The dwarf grins. "Yup. Little surprise, for the next time Sergeant here is being particularly miserable and big-eyed. Give our Eagle Girl a lesson about petting sad puppies. You never know where a stray dog has been, yeah?"

"Nice. But won't he remember?"

"Nope. Sissy wipes his memory of the last five minutes."

Lewis raises one elegant eyebrow. "She can do that?"

"She can do that."

Lewis turns and waves a hand languidly in your direction. "But what about the mooks? Won't they remember?"

"Ah yes, the mooks. About them..."

Can't cast anything while I'm restricted by this sticky stuff Balek thinks to himself. I'd give another finger to get out of it. But I won't just stand her and let that ... woman-shaped thing ... eat my brain, either.

If he sees any help coming in the door, Balek will yell and struggle to distract attention to him and way from it, while trying to break out of the web, even if he is still woozy from whatever happened during his capture.

CMB check to escape the sticky stuff: 1d20 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 - 1 = 15

Also still waiting for results on Perception/Sense Motive checks from earlier.

As Don starts describing the situation,Osei listens intently and reaches to open his scroll case, and to retrieve a quill and inkwell from his pack. After hearing the full report, the wizard looks to Nurrah.

"I assume I should report our situation and status of the safehouse immediately. Do you agree, Corporal Nurrah?"

@DMDM: Can I make a Knowledge (Planes) check based on the description from Don?

Nurrah: "Stop, you fool! We need a plan!"

Obey her, or charge ahead?

Will give Nurrah's response once we know who (if anyone) is rushing ahead.

Yes you can, but at -2 because you're hearing the description at second hand, from a guy who is rushed and half-panicked.

(Don has finished his prayer to Desna and has started one to Shelyn: "Beautiful lady, I will make a song for you. Three white doves will I buy, and release to fly free. Let me live to look upon the glory of the world again, and I will --")

Sorry, but Takka is moving ahead. The panic and the fright in Don's eyes is enough to say some bad s**t is ahead, and he's about ready to rumble on in.

Takka turns back ahead and waves to Kyami to nudge the door open and then step to the side, so he and Sleek can charge in and launch their assault.
