Jokum of the Breakbones |
"Whatever we do, let's do it quickly. I'd rather not wait like sitting ducks out here any longer than we have to." Jokum eyes their surroundings warily, alert for danger.
I can happily smash the lock if we decide that's what we want to do--I think Jokum has the highest damage dice, so it may (may) take fewer rounds that way.
Karthak Ironbreaker |
If there's no other way, let's do it. As for the corpses I think Iavdi idea to be the best one. Let's hide them and give them proper burial later on (if we survive, of course... XD)
Voren the Outsider |
Voren nods at Jokum. Turning to Iavdi, Athas, and Karthak, Voren offers, "Do you need any potions for wards?"
Voren looks around. "Well, I think that the two do deserve a hero's burial. But we should do something more until we get done in the Garrison. Like bury them? Or maybe say some prayers for them? I'm not really religious, so I'm not sure what to do in this situation. But, both Iavdi and Lisandra have good ideas on what to do with the bodies."
Voren looks at the gate. With some thought, he turns to the others. "Wait, guys. I may have some ideas. What if I use my scale of cloud walking to get to the other side and unlock it from there? Or I can pass it to someone who has good stealth? Or... maybe... I could use bluffs to try and get the enemy to open the gate? Like, say that I'm Faxon? Or a tiefling who wants to join? Or something of the like?"
lavdi |
If you are truly offering, Voren, I will take the Protection from Evil potion. Should come to good use!
"What is the extent of this scale's power, Voren? Can it actually allow you to pass the door?"
Hopefully someone can pick up disable device, even if it isn't a class skill. I'd be willing to do it, but I'm not getting much skill points wise.
Dakota Bloomingdale |
"Voren, I really wouldn't like to know you alone on the other side of that door. What if they're ready and waiting for us? You would be walking right into a trap, and us unable to help you right away. Let's just take it down!"
Dakota has a good dex, she might take DisDev next level if necessary.
Arthas Sword of Ragathiel |
"We leave the bodies for now. I have already given them the litanies and rites. When, of if we return, we will collect them and take them with us."
"Voren, I want you to take your scale and get inside. Having a door to shut behind us is a huge bonus. If you cannot easily get the door open for us, then bluff your way to safety. If things go sideways we will breech the door as soon as possible."
"Let's move people. Give me an evaluation of that door and keep your heads on a swivel."
Voren the Outsider |
I know that the scale provides levitation. I was thought there was a gate and a wall to a courtyard or something. Sorry, my mistake.
Alright, Iavdi. You get the potion of Protection from Evil. I got the potions for both myself and the entire party.
Looking to Iavdi, Voren says, "It doesn't let me go through walls. It lets me levitate on a pillar of clouds. But, now that I think about it, it won't be useful here. I guess that scythe blow got me a bit mixed up." Voren smiles sheepishly. A bit of an in game excuse for my mix up.
Looking at Dakota, Voren says, "Well, if I were to get them to open the door with a lie, we can just swarm in. However, if everyone has a different idea, then that's fine."
Looking at Arthas, Voren says, "I can't go through the door. However..."
Camris, how tall is the building? Could I levitate to the roof and get in? Kind of a stretch and I would still be alone or with 2 others if I pass the scale to them. But still a thought...
DM-Camris |
Voren: The Gray Garrison is three stories tall (about 35ft tall at highest point). Two full floors and a partial third. You don't see any obvious entry points from your place on the ground.
The main doors have 50hp with hardness 5. The burst strength is 25.
The lock mechanism have 20 hp with hardness 10.
Karthak Ironbreaker |
Karthak looks at Voren and Arthas and shakes his head:"Only one of them deserves an hero's burial, but the paladin's right on the account of leaving them here as hidden as possible. Torag willing we'll be able to give them a proper burial later. That said I think that entering alone in a den full of demons is no option at this point. We don't know what lies behid those doors but I gather it won't be Shelyn's blessed sisters welcoming party. So I strongly object to sending one of our own inside and hope he can fool an horde of demons. At this point it's better for us to break down the gates and face the enemy head on"
Then the dwarf grins and nods at Jokum:"Well if no one has anything on the contrary I think we may proceed... Jokum, seems like you got your wish... let's chop these gates down!"
Attack roll: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Damage roll: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Lisandra Elsinore |
Nodding as they discuss the fate of the two bodies, Lisandra finally adds "We should probably move the remains to one of these buildings, lest the carrion beasts get at them before we return."
Glancing at the fort, Lisandra adds somewhat hesitantly "I'm afraid I don't have any other ideas; siege warfare was never something I studied." Realizing herself somewhat useless to the task, Lisandra stands back as Karthak and Jokum get to work on the door.
Voren the Outsider |
Okay. I have two potions of protection from evil. So Voren still has one and Iavdi has the other. I made a note of this in my alias. Anyone else want any any potions?
Voren nods at Karthak and his thoughts. And he agrees with Lisandra's idea. With anyone else who wants to help, Voren helps get the bodies into one of the buildings. When Karthak and Jokum begin to chop the door, Voren steps back with Lisandra, waiting to enter the breach. He pulls out the wand of magic missile, just in case.
Jokum of the Breakbones |
Jokum grins as Karthak charges the door. "I was going to attack the lock, myself, but..." Striding over to the door, he stops suddenly, eyes narrowing. He pushes against the door, testing its give.
"What might be easier..." he murmurs, looking suddenly perturbed and withdrawn, "If I could be...big enough...and control it..."
Ok, so looking at those numbers, two questions: one, to DM Camris--how many people would you allow to Aid an attempt to break down the door?
Two, to everyone else...did anyone prepare or have access to enlarge person? I'm just saying, if we want to get in quickly and are willing to blow some resources on it...Jokum enlarged and then Hulked Out would have a +9 to break down the door, unaided...probably faster, since you only need to make the roll once. Thoughts?
I admit to also being really enamored of the idea of an enlarged, bear-like Jokum literally breaking down that door. :P
Voren the Outsider |
Sorry, Jokum. I do have enlarge person. I just don't have it prepared. Maybe next time.
Arthas Sword of Ragathiel |
"The dwarf has shown us the way! We shall cast the door down!"
Arthas charges the door and brings Radiance's indestructible blade to bear on the reinforced wood.
1d20 + 8 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 8 + 2 - 2 = 21
1d10 + 5 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 5 + 6 = 20
"Hurry Jokum, let us breach this portal without delay?"
Jokum of the Breakbones |
No worries, just thought I'd check in! Old-fashioned way it is, then.
Grinning, Jokum backs up, and, as Arthas rebounds from the door, he lunges forward, bringing his greatsword down on the knob.
Charge: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 2 = 22
Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (2, 1) + 5 = 8
Intelligence: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Looking around as he backs away from the door to leave room for the next assailant, Jokum seizes a stout beam long enough for several other people to take hold. "Plenty of wood around here if we wanted to try to ram it down...feels like it's getting close!"
So, just doing some more math...I think we're close to half the doors' hit points, even accounting for hardness, which brings the break DC down to 23. If three people can aid a ram, that's a +8 to someone's Strength check before their actual modifier (+2 for each person and +2 for the ram). Shall we give it a whirl, or just keep hacking?
Voren the Outsider |
INT: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Voren looks around. He notes that there is debris, masonry, and beams. But he doesn't make any connection.
When Jokum brings up the idea of a ram, Voren walks over, hooves clopping on the ground. He takes part of the beam. "I'm not physically strong. But I'll help in any way I can!"
Arthas Sword of Ragathiel |
Arthas takes another powerful two handed swing at the door.
1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 - 2 = 21
1d10 + 5 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 6 = 18
Radiance Bites deep once again.
"Just strike it down! I'd rather have my hand filled with steel than a timber when this comes down. Make yourselves ready with the ram."
Door only has 12 hp left. Just bash it in.
Jokum of the Breakbones |
Jokum looks down at the perfectly good ram in his hands, then shrugs. "Very well..." He drops his part of the beam (possibly throwing Voren wildly off-balance), and charges the door again.
Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 2 = 11
Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 5) + 5 = 13
AHAHAHAHAHAHA I'll leave that to Camris to describe...:P
Voren the Outsider |
Voren is wildly off balance when Jokum drops his end of the beam. However, he drops his end and regains his balance.
DM-Camris |
Karthak puts the finishing blow on the door. You can see through a hole in it, and its held up only by the lock mechanism now.
Then Jokum charged up and rebounded from it (along with anyone using Aid Another on him).
Jokum then fell prone in front of the door.
Then, almost as an afterthought, the main door slowly toppled over into the Gray Garrison with a soft WHAM.
DM-Camris |
Beyond, in the Foyer, you see this.
Along the northern wall of this room, a frieze depicts a line of mounted crusaders crashing over a horde of twisted demons.
The crusaders’ faces have been obliterated and vile graffiti is carved over the entire scene. Fresh blood stains the floor.
In the open doorway to the left you see a couple of armed and armored Tieflings with mugs in their hands.
They immediately bark warnings while dropping their mugs and going for their swords.
DM-Camris |
Arthas Sword of Ragathiel |
"Vengeace is upon you!"
Radience ablaze with holy light, the paladin falls upon his foes bringing retribution to Ragathiel's foes.
1d20 + 8 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 2 - 2 = 23
1d10 + 5 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 6 = 15
Karthak Ironbreaker |
Karthak advances towards the tieflings axe and shield on the ready. When he's just a few inches from the one in front of him he slashes viciously, aiming for his head:"Time to die, demon-scum!"
Attack roll: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Attack roll: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Move up to the first tiefling IF he's still alive after Arthas' attack, otherwise attack the other one
Jokum of the Breakbones |
Jokum manages to pick himself up and staggers forward into the room, a breath behind the other attackers.
Stand, move to engage the closest enemy (flanking if possible). Aaaaand that's my turn. :P
Dakota Bloomingdale |
Dakota moves with Iavdi. If she attacks, Dakota will Aid her. If not, Dakota will try to boost her AC.
Aid Another defensively, +4 to Iavdi's to hit or AC depending on Iavdi's action: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 - 4 = 12
lavdi |
Sorry, Mother's Day stuff got me!
Iavdi moves into the room, surveying the situation.
Seeing the demon-spawn choose to raise their weapons, she will do the same.
Moving to square E8, but that takes 30 feet of movement, which is a double move, so she'll have +4 AC. Thanks, Dakota!
Voren the Outsider |
When the door smashes in, Voren moves. Seeing the tieflings arming for combat, Voren moves closer to them, Seeing his companions fighting the first one, Voren turns his gaze to the one behind the tiefling. His eyes turn black, as if they were onyx stones. Dark energy emits from Ayne hiding in his cloak.
Move to F9, which should be 30 feet.. Then cast Evil Eye hex on tiefling 2. Voren will decrease its AC by 2 for 6 rounds. Will Save DC 15 decreases this to 1 round.
Lisandra Elsinore |
Just a quick question: How long did it take to break down the door? Bless lasts for four minutes at this level, so since the last combat took a few rounds, I'm thinking I don't need to refresh it just yet.
Moving quickly into the room, Lisandra takes a defensive position in the rear and awaits for the Tieflings to react.
Going to delay her action until after the tieflings go, unless Bless is down, at which point Lisandra will recast it.
DM-Camris |
Round 1_____
Arthas Sword of Ragathiel_____
Radience ablaze with holy light, the paladin falls upon his foes bringing retribution to Ragathiel's foes.
Arthas strode up to Red 1 and smote him down.

Karthak moved up to Red 2 and hewed his legs out from under him.
Jokum of the Breakbones_____
Jokum manages to pick himself up and staggers forward into the room, a breath behind the other attackers.
Dakota Bloomingdale_____
Dakota moves with Iavdi. If she attacks, Dakota will Aid her. If not, Dakota will try to boost her AC.

Lavdi_____
Moving to square E8, but that takes 30 feet of movement, which is a double move, so she'll have +4 AC. Thanks, Dakota!
Voren the Outsider_____
Move to F9, which should be 30 feet.. Then cast Evil Eye hex on tiefling 2. But since he’s down now, Voren holds off for the moment.
Lisandra Elsinore_____
Moving quickly into the room, Lisandra takes a defensive position in the rear and awaits for the Tieflings to react.
Going to delay her action until after the tieflings go, unless Bless is down, at which point Lisandra will recast it.
Enemies__________
Now that you’re up at the archway leading into what used to be the Meeting Hall, you see fifteen more tieflings scrambling away from tables with a card game and serving platters laden with body parts harvested from human victims, and chairs to unlimber weapons and start shouting commands, warnings and tactics.
Some of them are able to get off crossbow shots at Jokum and Arthas.
Crossbow shot 1 vs Jokum: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 for a possible 1d8 ⇒ 8 piercing damage.
Crossbow shot 2 vs Jokum: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 but shot each other.
Crossbow shot 3 vs Jokum: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 but shot each other.
Crossbow shot 4 vs Jokum: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 for a possible 1d8 ⇒ 6 piercing damage.
Crossbow shot 1 vs Arthas: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12 for a possible 1d8 ⇒ 8 piercing damage.
Crossbow shot 2 vs Arthas: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 for a possible 1d8 ⇒ 8 piercing damage.
Crossbow shot 3 vs Arthas: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 but shot the ceiling.
Crossbow shot 4 vs Arthas: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 for a possible 1d8 ⇒ 4 piercing damage.
Lisandra Elsinore |
It took about three rounds to take the door down. There might have been a round or two of healing somewhere in there as well.
In that case, Bless should still be up from the previous battle correct?
Watching the bolts suddenly start flying in, Lisandra realizes the danger has increased exponentially. Moving up behind Jokum, she quickly makes a prayer of healing.
Move to L10, cast Cure Wounds on Jokum... if Arthas was hit for any damage, she'll transfer 5 HP to him.
Cure Light Wounds on Jokum: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Karthak Ironbreaker |
"Quite a few demon scum here too, eh? I guess we'll need some help to deal with them swiftly!" so saying Karthak moves aside and invokes the power of Torag.
Karthak moves to L8-9 and cast protection from evil on himself. Lasts 4 minutes.
Second, the subject immediately receives another saving throw (if one was allowed to begin with) against any spells or effects that possess or exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment [charm] effects and enchantment [compulsion] effects, such as charm person, command, and dominate person). This saving throw is made with a +2 morale bonus, using the same DC as the original effect. If successful, such effects are suppressed for the duration of this spell. The effects resume when the duration of this spell expires. While under the effects of this spell, the target is immune to any new attempts to possess or exercise mental control over the target. This spell does not expel a controlling life force (such as a ghost or spellcaster using magic jar), but it does prevent them from controlling the target. This second effect only functions against spells and effects created by evil creatures or objects, subject to GM discretion.
Third, the spell prevents bodily contact by evil summoned creatures. This causes the natural weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creature. Summoned creatures that are not evil are immune to this effect. The protection against contact by summoned creatures ends if the warded creature makes an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature. Spell Resistance can allow a creature to overcome this protection and touch the warded creature.
lavdi |
Unfortunately, Karthak, it's not darkness. Tieflings, as far as I know, have darkvision. So darkness wouldn't be useful. It's actually Obscuring Mist. I don't want to do it if the party has problems with it.
lavdi |
Okay, sounds good. I'm just trying to avoid us dodging 15 crossbow bolts next turn. That's usually a bad idea.
Following her companions encouragement, Iavdi moves up and calls upon her heritage to create a cloud of mist to protect her and her friends from the tieflings bolts.
Move to K9, cast Obscuring Mist
Voren the Outsider |
Do I need a clear line of sight to cast a spell at someone or use my evil eye hex on one of the tieflings? I ask because Iavdi just put down Obscuring Mist.
Arthas Sword of Ragathiel |
OMG, if there was ever a perfect room for a 6d6 fireball . . .
The bolts deflect off Arthas like rain off a lotus flower.
"Behold! I carry the Sword of Ragathiel. I am his will made manifest in this place. You have broken your oaths and trespassed upon holy grounds. Your punishment---eternal damnation!"
Arthas charges in with Radiance held two handed. The cold iron blade glowing a holy nimbus in the mist. He brings the blessed blade down on the first heretic with what must surely be divine guidance! targeting lucky number 14, Blap!
Power attack: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 8 - 2 + 1 = 27
Threat: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 8 - 2 + 1 = 25
2d10 + 10 + 12 ⇒ (5, 5) + 10 + 12 = 32
AC is now 21. Arthas is under the effects of bless.
Jokum of the Breakbones |
Jokum bellows in rage as the two crossbow quarrels sprout from his shoulder and side. "Hnnnngh! That's it!" With a bellow, he follows Arthas, charging the foe who remains standing after the paladin's mighty blow.
Charging number 13, staying on the south of the cloud of mist!
Attack, Charge and Blee: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 8 + 1 + 2 = 24
Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (4, 3) + 5 = 12
