Urrnir's eyes narrow at Lilia's words. She attempts to move in such a way as to block the caretakers avenue of escape of, failing that, prepares to pursue him should he choose to flee.

T'Saalix looks at Uurnir and raises an eyebrow.

"What's this then? You're going to kill an unarmed man serving his city doing a thankless job? Fine, just do me a favor and bury me anywhere but here!"

looking back to Lilia

"If dwarfs want to be buried with their heads still attached they should tend to their own dead. I don't suppose the dwarves of Silverhelm went out of their way to cremate my people according to our tradition when they butchered them in the Duskmoon Hills..."

"You can argue about centuries old prejudices whenever you want, but if you are killing dwarves, we have to bring you to justice!"

I'm not overreacting here, am I?

No, knowingly assisting the gravekeeper ain't good.

That's assuming that he's doing so, though? I'm not sure we have any proof of that. He's not admitted to killing dwarves-- he's admitted to desecrating their bodies. Big difference.

Cairenn gives the gravedigger an incredulous, scornful look. "T'Salix! You are charged with honoring the dead, regardless of race. If you are defacing the dead, know that they will come for you in turn... sooner than you might think. Or do you not know the dead are walking the cemetery this very day?"

Cairenn looks sharply at the half-orc, alert to any tell of lying or truth-hiding.

Bolstered by the support of her group, Lilia presses further. "Did you kill those dwarves, or do you know who did? We have already encountered evil in this graveyard. Do you serve that evil, too? If not, please tell us."

The gravekeeper was using his cart and had been operating for around a week. He probably didn't kill the dwarves but turning a blind eye to the machinations of the undead is still pretty bad.

Ronen steps closer to T'Salix stopping three feet from him. "T'Salix twice this day I have met you in a suspicious circumstance. First, at the grave site where no doubt you were aiding in hiding a body that probably did not die of natural causes. Now we find you at a site that looks as if it was recently disturbed. You are responsible for the carts are you not? Is not one of your carts missing? We only just encountered an abomination who walked with a group of the recently deceased and cart full of dismembered heads. The trail leads here to your shed where we find you. Surely have knowledge of what is going here? You said yourself that you are only doing what you are told. So tell us exactly what is occuring here because by all accounts you have walked this cemetery more than anyone and know where this creature spawned from and what else still stalks us."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

Realizing the gravity of what the others are saying to the half-orc, Lueck steps back a couple of paces and looks around. He wants to make sure that T'Salix doesn't have any potential reinforcements lurking around if the discussion takes a violent turn.

T'Saalix looks genuinely surprised to hear that you have encountered undead in the day time.

"I've never killed anyone, at least not outside of battle. But If you really saw the dead risen in the daylight hours then something is wrong. We see signs of them all the time but we never actually encounter them... "

argh!!! Hopefully wont need second roll

No need for second roll ROnen, yours and Lilia's previous rolls have already shifted T'Saalix attitude to helpful.

T'Saalix looks relieved that the situation is somewhat diffused.

"The only excavation plans I'm aware of is for the old barrow mound outside the cemetery walls. It's been here longer than the city of ashes, longer than Bard's Gate even... it's ancient. But lately there's been some interest in it. I don't know why. My boss, Erlend, was an archaeologist before he became a caretaker here. Maybe it's his contacts from archaeological circles who have taken an interest in the old site. But that doesn't explain why the dead are rising in the daylight hours today. If you ask me, it's an awfully big coincidence that would happen on the day you all arrived."

As if to punctuate his point, the howling of the shadow wolves wafts down from the hand of fate mingling with the whistling autumn wind.

"Great now we have wolves"Pris shakes her head before she looks about the place. No real high ground that is easy to get too. She would have to climb to save her self and the others.

"So a big mound you say, all mysterious and full of dead people wanting to walk outside the dome. Sounds fun but shouldn't we I don't know ready our selves for wolves or worse before we dive into a mound full of dead people?"Pris asks as she checks her self and her daggers just encase.

It looks like the wolves are coming down out of the cliffs as far as they can but they have to stay in shadow. By night they would be free to sweep down into the cemetery it seems.

"Yes they are Priscilla. And they will hunt us down as night falls. More importantly is do they hunt us own their accord or at the command of something else." He looked grimly towards the cliffs. His instincts had not lied. "T'Salix can you direct us to this site that you say Erlend has begun digging?"

T'Salix gestures towards the ancient barrow mound that Genevieve had showed you, beyond the cemetery walls. "It's over there. Genevieve knows more about it then I do. There's a wagon load full of digging supplies around the back, but I guess the team got delayed leaving Bard's Gate. We were expecting them today. For a moment I thought you were the archaeologists here to do the dig," he says, tipping his head to Urrnir and Lilia and Priscilla. "When I saw the priest with you I realized you were here on other business."

Lilia points the half orc to the corpses they had just disposed of. "The undead are up there. You might want to go collect them before proper folk discover them.". Lilia turns to the others, "Let's head to this excavation site. Sounds like that area is what we have been sent to find."

Nodding at Lilia's suggestion he faces his companions. "If that abomination did come from the excavation spot it is feasible that it attacked us because it feared we were about to enter it's lair. But worse is that cart it had with it. Are they building an army? Do they expect to finish what the March of the Bones did not?"

From the tracks, it seems the undead gravekeeper came from the direction of the "Hand of Fate" rock formation, not the ancient barrow, and it only picked up the cart full of dwarven heads when it got to T'Saalix's shed.

Lueck going to take some liberty with your character hope you dont mind

As Ronen ponders the questions to the party he sees Lueck move off to look at the cart trail. Lueck bends down his hand moving over the trail. Ronen is unsure what Lueck sees until he sees Lueck point to the ground. "It came from that way." and then points in the direction of the howling wolves.

"I know it is important that we head to the barrow but the abomination came from that direction we must investigate it. Brother Valorn as a soldier of our Lady we cannot turn our backs on the fact that the these abominations now walk in the daylight. If the source lies in the cliffs we need to investigate this first."

With a disatisfied sniff Urrnir turns away from T'Salix, instead listening now to the ongoing conversation. Like Lueck she remains silent, unable to offer anything of value. What if the hands of fate were merely a red herring intended to distract them until nightfall when their fates would be sealed? Then again, were their assailants really able to do such a thing in with so little notice? The group had only fully come together earlier today after all.

Her brow furrows at the apparent conundrum.

He wondered why they had asked T'Salix to join them. They did not trust him. And they had good reason not to. Ronen took the cue. He understood if they let T'Salix on his way he might betray them. The half orc had no allegiance to them and if necessary might inform Erlend if the situation called for it.

"T'Salix, Ares is right. Whatever abominations are skulking the cemetery put you at danger. Coming with us provides you more security and with your knowledge of the area it would help us greatly."

T'Saalix looks shocked.

"You want me to hike up onto that hunk of rock with you now, at closing time? We leave at this time for a reason, tourists. Ares blushes with embarrassment then cuts in, "If they try to overrun us I can keep them at bay with my own light after dusk. Come with us to atone your sins and help us rid your cemetery of perversions of evil."

T'Saalix nods. He seems to like Ronen's no-nonsense manners. He follows along out of the cemetery and up into the Hand of Fate, where the shadow wolves are crouching at the edge of the light.

As the distance between the party and the wolves shrinks, T'Saalix exclaims, "Do you see that? Their eyes are like burning embers!"

As the group follows the trail up into the cliff formation, it becomes easier to make out the numbers and position of the shadow wolves. There is a group of four on the upper plateau, six more that have picked their way down through shadowy pathways to the middle levels of the rock formation, and one advance group of three that had been over-eager and got themselves stranded in the low crags at the foot of the hand of fate, close to the ground. These three are pacing nervously. It looks like their way back has been cut off due to a change in the position of the sun. The shadows they followed to get this low have been dispelled and they are stranded where they are, huddled under a crag that blocks them from exposure to the sun light.

Urrnir once again draws out her Longbow. This time, however, she awaits the confirmation of her companions before doing anything further.

T'Saalix squints and gazes up further into the rocks.

"Looks like we can avoid some of them and make our way to the top. The sunlight will keep them separated... Do you holy types know anything about these creatures? They don't look natural, even I can tell that much."

Knowledge Religion DC 17:
These shadow wolves are akin to the better known humanoid shaped shadows, an incorporeal undead which drains strength from the living with it's touch. These lupine shaped shadows have the same incorporeality and strength drain, but are an added menace because of their propensity for becoming corporeal long enough to trip their prey. Even divided into small groups these creatures would make a deadly foe.

The air is noticeably colder as you step onto the Hand of Fate, and an ominous sense of foreboding emanates from the place, as if it is reacting to your presence, and only the sunlight is containing something that wishes to stamp you out of existence.

Cairenn peers at the shadow wolves, then sucks in a sharp breath and reaches to grab at Lueck's arm a moment.

"Lueck, do you recall the bat-god? How it became mist, and how normal weapons couldn't harm it at all? That we needed enchanted steel? These wolves are like that as well... and they can bear one down to the ground as surely as true wolves. It would be suicidal for us to fight them on their terms. Better to rain vials of holy water down on them while they stand trapped in their little pockets of shadow. Have a care, everyone. Those ghost-wolves will sap your very strength from your limbs, should they get their teeth in you. Stick to the sunlight, and let us not tarry up there."

At the Hand of Fate itself, Cairenn shivers with the sudden chill. He looks around him, warily, and mutters a spell to detect enchantments.

Ronen looks to the sky watching the sun sink behind the horizon. "T'Salix do you have any idea what we might at the top? And how much time do you think it will take to reach the top?" As he looks back at the group there is certain amount of distress on his face. "If we spend time trying to kill the wolves we waste resources and time. "Maybe we could I don't know blast 'em with some light, I think you holy guys can do that, with the symbol presenting and chanting and what not Right, cause if not I think we are hosed"

T'Saalix seems to be really embracing all the attention. His brow is furrowed as he takes in the lay of the land.

"If it's just a quick jaunt to the peak we're aiming for, we could be up and down again in an hours time... on an ordinary day. Today seems different though. Something in that hill knows you are here and can't wait for night to fall to give you a warm welcome. Look at those things!"

The half-orc takes in Ronen's words with a somber expression, but offers a chauvinistic sounding scoff at Lilia's suggestion of camping overnight on the Hand of Fate.

"A nice structure to hole up in, that's what you expect to find up there? A nice little cave... what a fine idea... I'll tell you where I plan to hole up for the night... in my bed, back in Bard's Gate! No, Ronen has the right of it. A quick dash up to have a look around, then back to the ground while we have daylight left."

T'Saalix seems angry about revealing his fear. He seems like a prideful individual who has been in and out of his fair share of sticky situations, but the idea of being stuck in the cemetery, or even on the road, after dark, is more than he will risk.

When Cairenn casts detect magic, he picks up an aura of necromantic magic blanketing the whole Hand of Fate. It seems to originate from deep inside and spill out at a few points about two-thirds of the way up (possibly from cave mouths that are not plainly visible from here due to the uneven craggy shape of the formation).

"You know the area better than us, orc. If your words are true then we should use your knowledge. Let's move up there quickly, and then get out of here before the wolves take all of us."

"We should leave the beasts with a distraction. We've no guarantee how long this will take. If we were to draw their attention away we could at least make a stealthier approach. Otherwise they will set upon us immediately once the sun falls."

T'Saalix grimaces. "I think once the sun falls, nothing is going to stop these and worse from setting upon you. Let's get up there and have a quick look around. I want to see where this ghoul that stole my cart came from."

T'Saalix hikes up into the bluffs, picking his way along a trail that is carpeted in light, to avoid the shadow wolves.

Cairenn recognizes the bluff the party is cresting... this is where he once saw a mysterious woman with blond dreadlocks standing after the caretakers had left for the day.

As the group hikes they manage to follow a path avoiding the shadow wolves. The evil creatures howl and snap their jaws at the air, singeing themselves on rays of sunlight in their efforts to draw closer and circle the party, but to no avail.

After less than forty minutes the group seems to have reached the origin point of the gravekeepers tracks. Cresting a rocky bluff you come to an area that was sheltered from view from the ground. A system of shallow caves can be seen, and within them a great door of green copper, stained with rain fall, encrusted with earth and clay. The door bears cruel iconography and symbols in an intricate pattern, faded and masked by detritus. In it's center is a wheel, too large for a mortal to turn, marked with increments and symbols like the face of a sun-dial. The wheel is rusted and the whole door swollen shut and overgrown with moss. It doesn't appear to have been opened in a very long time.

Several meters out in front of the door is a monolith of the same green metal, this structure less weathered and possessing a sickly sheen. Around the monolith is freshly churned earth, as though it has risen up in the same fashion as the unquiet dead who nightly shirk the fetters of the grave in the cemetery below.
