Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury's office is vastly different from all other Venture captain's office . The spartan conditions, the hanging weapons that seem to have been used recently, all point towards a utilitarian decor.

"Come in, come in. Please sit. I have just finished debriefing the dwarves, both rescued prisoners, and emissaries. Nasty business those Razmiran. Totally understand what you all had to do to rescue our captive Pathfinders. Doesn't make it any easier but look where I am. Two days ride to the Worldwound, towns wiped out by demonic hordes. Watch these crusaders. Riding into town, gleaming armor, pristine swords, prayers to Iomedae on their lips. Spend a week fighting these monstrosities, come back changed. Different. Eyes wide open."

As he speaks the Venture Captain paces around the office.

As if remembering the Pathfinders are still here, he turns to them, a look of sadness on is face. "I know that you recently arrived here, and I truly hate to do this to you, but given how successful you were in Razmiran, I have another assignment for you."

"Some weeks ago we received this letter from an anonymous source, advising us of the discovery of a Sarkorian site in rural Mendev, near the village of Dawnton. We sent three Pathfinders to perform an initial investigation. “Word came to us two days ago that the entire team has been arrested for murder and is scheduled to be hanged in seven days’ time. I would appreciate your traveling to Dawnton, investigating the crimes, and finding any evidence necessary to clear their names.”

He pauses for a moment, as if gathering his will or holding back strong emotion. “As much as it grieves me to think this possible, you may find evidence that implicates our comrades. If they are guilty of this crime, let them hang. It’s justice of a sort, and we must all remember that we are guests in Mendev and subject to all its laws. Your predecessors’ reputation has tarnished the Pathfinders’ name in Dawnton, so I recommend you not travel and investigate openly as Pathfinders agents. Be careful and remember that three comrades are relying on you.”

Pooka stretches his arms and snaps his fingers, the latter inviting Luna to come closer before doing a few circles and laying down on the floor. He tosses her a treat, to which she only moves just enough to retrieve it before closing her eyes with a satisfied huff.

"It seems we are destined to be traveling always into the areas where we are not welcome. I will keep my wayfinder hidden appropriately. Rest assured, if there is truth to be found, we will find it. Allow me to grab my journal, we will have a few questions..."

Sun's eyes track the pacing of the venture captain, listening to what he is saying and trying to understand the implications.

"I am not familiar with the Sarkorian you speak of. Can you please elaborate to a simple Druid what it is and how it functions? Perhaps your observation of people changing might be tied to this." Sun asks.

"Illustrious Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury, we are to being very good at delicate situations," says Xûll sincerely, and before his companions can mention the slaughter he continues, "Not just at the ending of blades, also. We are knowing when evil is evil and when good folk are being mistaken. There is being a difference.

"We are already having cover as guards for the Holy Druid Sun Desin, so perhaps we should be keeping this, yes?" Xûll suggests, "But please Illustrious Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury, be telling us would you like us to also be continuing predecessors' mission in Dawnton?"

Xull:
Assume someone gives you a +2 assist:
10+ Dawnton is a small village at the crossroads of the local trade highway and the Setian River, a tributary of the Egelsee. It has a small permanent population, butswells to many times its size on festival days and during the harvest.
15+ As with many small villages in the region, Dawnton has become distrustful of strangers since the fall of Kenabres. This distrust is especially virulent toward tieflings and others with demonic roots, influence, or appearance.
20+ Tobias Luin is both the village’s sheriff and mayor. Local opinion holds that he is fair to the point of being soft. It is unusual that he would hold an execution, but local law calls for a vote of the citizenry to decide the fate of those guilty of capital crimes.
25+ There are rumors of similar brutal crimes in other villages near Dawnton. When a guilty party was found in those cases, execution was always the result.

The Venture captain pauses in mid pace, turns to Sun, "Sarkorian is a culture, the indigenous race that existed here before the Worldwound ripped a hole in this place. They were know as fierce, painted warriors and bizarre witchery. Yet even before the end, Sarkorian mystics spoke of ascendant chaos, a thinness between this world and the next. The Pathfinders where going to search the site for anything that could help us keep the demon hordes in the Worldwound at bay. Nothing in that site could have caused the chaos currently enveloping Dawntown."

The venture captain tries to end his pacing, and turns to Xull, "That would be too much to ask. I just want you to concentrate on liberating my Pathfinders if they are innocent. I have other teams that can search this site."

No problems. Just from running these, they usually have two skills per "knowledge block" - and the knowledge (local) usually allows gather information also. Hence my "in case" roll. :-) By the way, what's a "butswell". Is it what happens when you eat too much cake?

"Me has been hearing locals of Dawnton be misliking of strangers," says Xûll, as much to his companions as the venture-captain, "But we be trying to be making of best impression. Me also be hearing that Dawnton Mayor Tobias Luin is not usually being firm so as to be hanging of people, but vote among citizens is to be needed for this case.

"But Illustrious Venture Captain Jorsal of Latterbury," Xûll continues, "Me has been hearing of similar crimes in towns that are being close to Dawnton. Perhaps they are being related? Is it being good idea to be looking at those murders, or are we not to be having sufficient time?"

Please open Xûll's spoiler if my Shoantinglish isn't clear - even if it is.

Turning to Xull, "Those cases you are talking about. Done and finished. The people responsible for those murders have already been hanged. No, I need those Pathfinders back. And you are too valuable to me to act as country barristers for the next month, settling village disputes and the like. Once the demon horde relents I can look deeper into the matter." at this he releases a mirthless grin.

"Time is of the essence. We have 7 days and Dawntown is a 3 and a half days ride. I can give you mounts for the journey." With a look at Pooka and Luna, Jorsal knows Luna is a fierce combat mount, but unsure if Pooka also uses her as a draft animal.

Pooka nods at the man, "I will indeed make use of your offered mount. Luna would be better served to be unburdened by my weight so she is fresh, should the need to defend ourselves arise."

Pooka rubs his hands together, "So all we know is there has been a string of murders, and this one involves our fellow agents, somehow. The sheriff wouldn't normally dole out judgement this harsh, but he was pressured publicly to do it. And it would be best not to travel openly as pathfinders. Got it. I can't think of anything else that we don't need to discover ourselves when we get there. Shall we?"

"Me fast runner, not normally ride," says Xûll, bouncing on his long legs for emphasis, "But me not having been running for three days before. Horse is being acceptable. Should we be getting extra equipment? Are we to be needing anything not normally in adventurers' kits?"

Xûll is otherwise happy to get moving. Unless anyone else has other questions, he'll make his way down to the stables to get the horses. First, though, he'll stop off at the Exchange's supply store for a decent bow.

I can contribute to that if this seems like a good idea."

"Good be your suggestion, Holy Druid Sun Desin. No, point of blade be only bringer of truth we be taking, me thinks."

Unless the Venture-Captain has more to say, Xûll remains willing to leave.

Nothing to buy (other than the mwk comp. longbow with prestige points), I stocked up pretty extensively last session, and hardly needed more than my nodachi! ;-) Time to save up for some magical niceness.

Also, sorry about the out-of-date tagline! Leveled up and updated my stat block, but totally forgot about the tagline. My will save dropped (no idea how that happened, I'd probably transcribed it incorrectly last level, sorry!) and I've also come to realize that Xûll's medium armor slows him down! I could swear medium armor was fine... did it slow in 3rd Ed? Anyway, his armored speed is now a paltry 30ft. On the plus side, reflex save is up, perception is up, CMB and CMD are up, hp are up (of course), Rage rounds are up.... but the rest are the same.

"Me be ready to be leaving when you are being ready," says Xûll to his friends as they return from their respective factions' supply stores.

Sun is willing to leave as well. I cannot think of anything that would be well suited for me to purchase to have on hand to help the investigation until we get there and dig into it a bit further. I have shuffled his spells around to hopefully deal with the more urban mission.

Actually, Xûll will pick up a mwk cold iron lucerne hammer. Never know when you'll need bludgeoning, piercing, demon killing and/or reach! I also like the idea of both being strapped over his back in massive sword over massive hammer style. Just to cover devils, too, he'll pick up some oil of align weapon. The arsenal grows!

Plenty of time to retcon purchases, but I feel like we are done here. Moving along ....

The venture captain nods to the Pathfinders as they exit his office. "Good luck gentlemen. Augustus I had heard you were quiet, but we look for assertiveness in our newer recruits. Be confident to be bold son."

The road to Dawntown is well used, slicing through farms, meadows, and lightly forested areas. The Pathfinders feel isolated as they travel on the fine animals the venture captain has lent them. They cross few farms, and fewer locals who wish to speak to them.

As morning breaks on the fourth day, the Pathfindes set out once again to Dawntown. As the approach the town, the number of people grows exponentially. Small clusters of rugged looking farmers amble towards Dawntown. The Pathfinders try to engage these 'hangers' in conversation, but are met with cold indifference. The Pathfinders note that this is not uncommon in this region, so close to the Worldwound, these peasants often find themselves the innocent bystanders in the conflict between Iomedae's holy warriors, demonic hordes, and scavengers picking over the remains. The group can distinctly overhear "Murdering hobos...getting what they deserve" too many times for their liking. At their current pace they should reach Dawntown before sun down, with enough time to secure lodgings and take a general survey of the area.

The Exchange

Male Human (Shoanti) Level 5, #-3

When the are alone on the road, Xûll is struck with an idea.

"Friends, it is occurring to me that we maybe being better off with different cover," he begins, "Since we are being strong types, and our organization be fighting demons of Worldwound already, why we not be posing as demon fighters? Holy Druid Sun here for healing and holy mission, we he for helping town. What are you to be thinking of this?"

Xûll pats his newly acquired cold iron lucerne hammer fondly. This should help with the cover! he congratulates himself on his accidental foresight.

Pooka nods his head at Xull's suggestion, but offers another perspective for thought. "We know that they don't appreciate the pathfinders as well, do you think posing as worldwound veterans would peg us as such? I think going as the muscle and traveling companions for Sun the druid, on a mission of healing would be good, and might give us a favorable edge when we begin to speak with people."

The large Shoanti strides up to the nearest pod of hangers. His smooth words turn their normal indifferent attitude. "Well me Xull. I am Zeb, and this is my wife Jora. You all headed to see the hanging too? Can't wait. Should be a fun time. Heard town's pretty full so we are headed to the tent city as they are calling it. See you around."

As the Pathfinders near the town proper, they see the cluster of wooden building to the west, and to the east they see a sprawling 'tent city'. Dawntown is a very small town, and only has an influx of people like this during is planting and harvesting celebrations. A large stream meanders behind both the town, and the tent town giving locals access to transportation.

Ok so you have one phase left to explore, and need to decide where to lodge. Move your token to where you want to investigate, then you can all come together and choose lodgings and compare notes. You can investigate alone, in pairs, or as group, but I recommend alone.

Ok so I chose to start with Xull so everyone can see how the mechanics will work. I can then run all your encounters simultaneously. What we are going to do is role pay this out, if a NPC is initially hostile towards you, I will prompt you for a Diplomacy check. At the end, I will roll off screen to tell you what you have learned. I will also add in modifiers depending on how it has gone, and of course I will choose the skill with the best modifier. For this encounter Xull, your final skill check will be Diplomacy or Kn (local), unless you can/want to roleplay a different skill thematically.

As Xull approaches the tent town, he noticed dozens of tents and sundry sized ring an open area where the visitors gather for games and talk. He feels like he just walked into a county fair, rather than a town about to hang people. He can spy food stalls, music, jugglers, and sports.

You didn't have to make the diplomacy check, but I will allow it. Generally speaking, the town is currently inhabited by locals - found in the town proper, and hangers - found outside town. You will find they are all uninterested in talking to you for various reasons. Try to connect with them, make friends.

Xull walks up to a man, and begins speaking. The man turns to him, surprised he is bring spoken to. "Pathfinders, bunch of murdering hobos. Who cares what they did or who they did it to. Just happy to see some excitement around here. Look at all this. Have you ever seen a woman throw burning torches like that. So glad I left the farm to come here. Sad to have to head back in a few days. Plowing, tilling, weeding watering, harvesting. Got here after the townspeople voted. I don't know the mayor so not sure what his deal is. Lived in this area all my life, not too many hangings around here."

Looking back at Xull, the man realized that he is talking much more than he normally would.

"Names Renvar. You seem like a real nice fellow. What is your name and where did you say your from? Don't think I caught it."

Traveling much now, and travels be taking me with Holy Druid Sun Desin - are you to be hearing of him? - and making deal with dwarves of mountains. Be securing good trades, much quality equipment. Cannot be talking much more about such dealings, but trade deal be done and we be hearing of hanging in Dawnton so we be coming here."

Xûll smiles amiably as he finishes pitching the man's tent, "Lacking for excitement, yes? Perhaps you would like to be seeing me doing some kind of physical challenge? I am being strong and liking of good test of strength. Maybe be providing pre-hanging entertainment?"

The Shoanti man is happy to partake in some kind of wrestling contest, if someone else is up for it, or perhaps just trying to break something through a show of might. The idea is to provide some light entertainment and ingratiate himself with the locals, hopefully using his new friend Renvar as an in.

Xull spends time in contemplation, preparing himself for the upcoming conflict. At the appointed time, he makes his way over to the tents. The thin man Renvar was speaking to approaches him, 'So you think you can take on Ruamumba? You are a big boy." He turns to a group of men standing near him, "Change it to 5/2."

Once again turning to Xull, "Oh here are the rules. No magic, no weapons, no lethal force. First to tap out or pass out loses. Questions? Wanna bet on yourself?"

Xull, prepared for the contest, moves with his new entourage behind the tents. There he sees a 15 foot diameter circle outline in chalk. The ground inside the circle is packed, hardened earth. He see the large Grundi enter the circle. Xull enters opposite and waits for a signal. A sizable crowd has gathered and people are trickling in behind the front row.

Pooka doesn't know why he is suddenly so sad, feeling he is missing out on something enormously fun..

Umm ... Pooka is in the beer garden, you my friend will have a GREAT time! I just wanted to show everyone what an 'investigation' is like.

The Exchange

Male Human (Shoanti) Level 5, #-3

Xûll will bet on himself. However since this is PFS, there will be little effect. How about he pays the man's losses if he loses to try and maintain the friendship?

As the man's fist thuds into Xull's face with a force like tempered steel, Xûll favors the man with a bloody grin, "This is good! You not be using magic, but you be having other... special skills... me thinks. Me be having skills also. Me be getting very angry that Garundi man hit me... man should be knowing better manners!"

Red veins pop to the surface of Xûlls eyes and he spits out equal measures of foam and blood. (Enter rage, assuming it doesn't violate the rules)

Unarmed strike, raging, power attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 9 - 1 = 28
Crit confirm: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 9 - 1 = 19
Damage, raging, power attack: 1d3 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9
Crit Damage, if successful: 1d3 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 2 = 11

Xûll ducks another blow from the man, and comes up beneath his guard. Using his legs to add force to the blow, the maddened Shoanti strikes the Garundi hard with his knuckles just under the soft part of his jaw.

Woo! Nothing wrong with my dice... for now! Gotta love getting a crit in that situation. ;-)

By the way, if rage isn't allowed, take that back to 7 damage on the hit, +9 if the a 17 confirms the crit (so 7 damage or 16 damage if his AC is 17 or less).

Everything was legal there

With a vicious upper cut, Xull knocks Ruamumba out cold. The onlookers' silence is deafening, until Xull can hear Renvar scream from the back of the crowd. The crowd slowly begins to disperse, many forlorn looks on people's faces. The thin man approaches Xull, "That is mighty impressive outlander. Why are you here?"

I will use Xull's earlier responses, and assume that he asks similar questions to the thin man as Renvar.

off site rolls

Xull learns, "Otto, a farmer who lives just outside Dawntown, found the body of the first victim the morning the accused Pathfinders arrived. He is still going about his business as though nothing happened."

"Otto worships demons out at his farm. That's why the murderers skinned the first one alive out on his property."

Agustus

Agustus approaches what the locals have described as Orug's General Store. It is one of two permanent business here in Dawntown. This sprawling shop occupies three large storefronts on the main road. The center room is the general store. The east room holds stored goods, an office, and the living quarters of the owners, Orug Foram, and his wife Tessa Greehagh. The west building is Orug's barbershop.

Sun

Sun approaches the village's inn. He immediately notices that it is huge for a settlement of this size, but due to the influx of 'hangers' it is quite full. there are two rooms available if you want them. The pub downstairs is the only restaurant available in town, and is very busy at meal times. He walks in to a bustling common room.

And last but not least, Pooka

Pooka, with Luna obediently behind, makes his way to the beer garden. Located in the center of the tent city's open area stands a broad beer garden with walls constructed of beer barrels and crates. It is currently very difficult for Pooka to find a place to stand as the mass of humanity, and cacophony of sound crash over him.

@ Xull FYI I used the stats from the bullying brawler (monk 2) 96; NPC codex. I so wanted to use stunnnig fist round 2, and then flurry. Oh well.
