Count Edmond Vaylan |
Edmond sits down for a second to catch his breath and takes a look at his shoulder. "Well, that is really uncomfortable." Then he hears Havelock speak up. "I think there is another way in over here. It's where they came out from this side."
Hugh Tiberious Gatsby |
Hugh makes his way up to Havelock. "In case we all die a horribly painful death in the next hour, I want you to know that I appreciate your assist earlier. As much as I like to think I can take on the world, I know I wouldn't be anywhere without those who help me." he drops his pride for a slight second. "Thank you."
Just as suddenly as his gratitude showed itself his movements become more brisk, his stature more sharp, and the ever present grin reforms from the humble smile. The facade pops back into place. "Back to business" He makes his way back outside and gives a laugh "Side entrances are where all the fun happens! How is everyone? "
Dimwit |
"Why don't we retireve the pitons from the hole and discuss whether we should go in through the front or through the window?"
Dimwit chuckles to himself, Havelock having aroused him from his disappointment in seeing his prey running off. "Brilliant suggestion! Aye, grabbing those pitons is a splendid idea. You Oracles, you're a wise bunch, to be sure. Always thinking. I like that." he says, giving Havelock a playful slap on the bum and cheeky grin as he walks past to retrieve his pitons for the hole.
Baron Marcus Hawklin |
"Good. I think we're all alive, anyways." Marcus shivers, turning to Genta, only to find her unscathed next to Edmond's red side. [¡]Well, it was hard to see.[/i] he thought to himself silently, walking over to him. "Lord Vaylan, take this."[b] he says, offering the same to him.
[b]"Well, that is really uncomfortable."[b]
[b]"Aye, it looks that way."
Havelock Vetinari |
Shouldn't the yellow square in front of me be gone?
I move over to where the fleeing Kobold went and take a look at the entrance.
Count Edmond Vaylan |
"Thank you, friend. I am not so grievously injured yet that we should be wasting that on me, though." He laughs to himself, "And to think, I didn't honestly expect to get hit so I didn't buy any potions of my own. Foolish, I suppose." He moves to the side entrance just to peek in.
Genta Cynama |
Genta shakes her head no. "Sorry, I haven't prepared that one today. I do have a couple of curing scrolls, in case we need them. But I think we can handle a pack of kobolds... if it is just kobolds."
She checks herself and her fox for injuries and sees none. So, she walks over to the side door. "As long as we're going in, I'd support using the least obviously-trapped path."
Hugh Tiberious Gatsby |
"I think I'll try and see what's in this room, make sure there's no ambush or set up one of my own.". Hugh tries and climbs up into the pantry all sneaky like.

Havelock Vetinari |
I notice that my comrades entered in through another route, and move towards them.
ShakaUVM |
Hugh trips over a tripwire and falls prone... and then he stands up, no harm done. It looks to have been hastily and recently tied off.
You hear nothing down any corridor except off to the right, you hear the sounds of sobbing.
The spikes are just sitting there on the ground, and don't seem to be much of a threat to anyone.
Baron Marcus Hawklin |
Marcus walks further into the mansion, picking up a scroll lying on the floor. "Hm? What's this?" He opens the scroll and attempts to read it.
Dimwit |
Thinking to follow Havelock, Dimwit is about to turn in the same direction taken by his comrade. But as he does so, he notices a mysterious scroll out of the corner of his eye in the other room. Dimwit knows that between him and scroll there could be traps or he could be about to walk headfirst into an ambush; but his curiosity gets the better of him and he's unable to let it go. "Just a peak," he tells himself. And the next thing he knows his stout little legs have conveyed the rotund little dwarf to where he saw the scroll.
ShakaUVM |
Marcus walks further into the mansion, picking up a scroll lying on the floor. "Hm? What's this?" He opens the scroll and attempts to read it.
The scroll is nailed to the wall, with what appears to be a nail covered in dried blood. Your attempts to move it are unsuccessful.
It reads:
"Abraxas, Devourer, Heed and Respect this Contract, entered into Willingly by Joint Assent with I, Hocuba Illance, Fifth Count of the Name.
By the Heavens that bend above us,
By the god we both Adore,
I command and abjure to you carry out routine housekeeping duties on the facility annex, circumscribed by the boundaries denoted in Attachment A (which shows the building you are in) which will be enumerated in three points directly below:
1) Restoring the floors, ceiling, roof, walls, structural elements and decorative water features in this building to the exact condition it is in at the moment the two of us sign this contract. You will not harm any resident in the hall during this process. You will carry out this task exactly one time per tenday.
2) Restoring the ward lines as detailed in Appendix B to the exact condition it is in at the moment the two of us sign this contract. You will not harm any resident during this process. You will carry out this task exactly one time per day.
3) Report to me via a Sending spell any time an unauthorized creature or person or construct enters the grounds of the estate. The Sending spell will contain all of the details that you can escry. You will carry out this task no more than one time per day.
Payment:
1) For carrying out enumerated point 1 above, you will be paid .2 SUs, though naught from any target that has fewer than .5 SUs remaining.
2) For carrying out enumerated point 2 above, you will be paid .3 SUs, though naught from any target that has fewer than .5 SUs remaining.
3) For carrying out enumerated point 3 above, you will be paid .1 SUs, though naught from any target that has fewer than .5 SUs remaining.
The SUs will be paid from your pool of SUs, as enumerated and described in Contract SU-497. You will not collect SUs from any other source, other than that detailed in Contract SU-497.
<Signed>
Hocuba Illance
5th Count Illance
<A red smear>
Abraxas
Devourer
Dimwit |
Looking to his comrades, Dimwit asks, "Hocuba Illance, 5th Count Illance? Abraxas, Devourer? Do these names mean anything to anyone? Perhaps that whistle that we heard before was a sign that the sending spell had been caste and that this Hocuba Illance has been informed of our arrival? Do you think we'll be given an official reception sometime soon? Maybe he'll be inviting us to stay for tea or a feast in our honor?"
Havelock Vetinari |
"While tea would be nice, I highly doubt it's a priority to those in this building."
I make a knowledge planes check on , taking 10:
10+6=16.
Havelock Vetinari |
"I highly doubt coffee is high on their list of priorities either" I say wryly, as I walk over to the sobs I hear while thinking about the name "Abraxas".
Upon meeting the cowering kobold, I say to it in Draconic "Hello. Would you care to tell me what exactly happened to this place, how you came to live here?"

Baron Marcus Hawklin |
"Illance is the House that owns this mansion, burgess." Marcus begins, "Hocuba Illance runs the estate separated from his great-grandson, the 8th and current Count Illance. It would appear that someone or something has signed their servitude to the Count in a blood oath. The stipulation that the wards be replaced every tenday would explain why we found no breach in the system, although it is clear that the rumors of intruders were true." He continues, trailing behind the others. He follows along in the conversation Havelock's having, while taking in his surroundings.

Dimwit makes his way into the kitchen to see if there is anything of interest.
The smell of fresh bread permeates the air. You see a pot of tea on the stove. As you enter, a sharp whistle rings out, signalling it is ready.
Knowledge History: 1d20 ⇒ 12 (10.)
Poking around, you see that the food stores here look perfectly fresh, but the names on the sacks of flour and produce are from farms that went out of business decades ago.
ShakaUVM |
Upon meeting the cowering kobold, I say to it in Draconic "Hello. Would you care to tell me what exactly happened to this place, how you came to live here?"
"Why did you have to STAB me?" the creature whines in Draconic. "This is our home now. I just came here to find a place where I could do my research in peace and quiet."
Dimwit |
Having scoured the kitchen and finding nothing of any real interest, other than that the foodstuffs seem oddly well preserved for their age, Dimwit checks out the four smaller rooms near to Marcus.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Should I do a perception check for each room individually or one roll for each room?
Baron Marcus Hawklin |
Knowledge History: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Do my perception and history rolls discover anything else out about the area? I'd followed them, but I haven't been able to move my token. I've been on my mobile.
"YOU attacked US. WE were defending ourselves." Marcus stated legally, in Draconic, "There doesn't have to be any more violence. We're here to investigate. Where is the Count, his artisans, and servants? This is their home, which we were given permission to enter. And what's this research of yours? If you explain yourself, we can get to the bottom of this and put this behind us as a misunderstanding."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
ShakaUVM |
Should I do a perception check for each room individually or one roll for each room?
Go ahead and roll once per room.
Do my perception and history rolls discover anything else out about the area? I'd followed them, but I haven't been able to move my token. I've been on my mobile.
You see nothing else of interest around here. The storage room the kobold is cowering in is filled with produce that (History) are again from decades ago. Yet they look as fresh as the day they were picked.
"No, YOU attacked US. WE are defending ourselves! WE are the artisans!" the kobold states defiantly. "This place is our home now. It is legally a residence for magical artisans, the document says so. We are all artisans! Therefore it is legally our home."
"You ask a lot of questions..." the kobold says, calming down, counting on his fingers. "Um, the baron? Or count or something? Haven't seen him. But he has binding contracts up all over this place. So we've... accepted them. On his behalf. It's completely legal!"
Baron Marcus Hawklin |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Marcus attempts to discern if the Kobold is telling the truth.
Dimwit |
Go ahead and roll once per room.
OK. Checked room 1 already, so I'll roll for the other three.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

ShakaUVM |
"Besides," he says, glancing wistfully out the window at the brown stream flowing by, "We have all the fresh food and water we want here. It's not like living underground. At all."
1d20 ⇒ 19+??
You think he's telling the truth.
Dimwit, you find one room that has a bunch of coils of rope in it. Another with springs and spikes, suitable for constructing traps.
Dimwit |
Dimwit starts helping himself to the rope, spikes, and springs, loading it into his pack. "I don't think anyone is going to be missing any of this anytime soon."
Dimwit |
Now to check out the two smaller rooms near to Marcus.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Count Edmond Vaylan |
Throughout all of this Edmond has just been hanging around, letting others do the snooping and the talking. He knows searching is not his element. Instead he tags along and listens to Marcus and the kobold talk.
Havelock Vetinari |
Oh, I make a knowledge the planes check about "su", Do I know it means "soul unit"?
Planes: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
ShakaUVM |
Oh, I make a knowledge the planes check about "su", Do I know it means "soul unit"?
It's not a commonly used term, though you can certainly infer what you wish from it.
"What can you tell me about 'Abraxas'?" I ask the Kobold.
"Um, we've never met the guy. But we're pretty sure he's some sort of invisible servant. You know, like the spell. When we tunnelled in here, he sealed it up behind us. And he's been ruining our pit traps. Filling them in when we're not looking."
Havelock Vetinari |
"Can you tell me where I might find other scrolls such as the one located in the hallway?"
Dimwit |
"Havelock, is he saying that it's the note itself that is keeping the toilets running? BTW, I think he might need to go...if you know what I mean. I don't fancy the thought of finding out what a kobold's bowel motions smells like if I can avoid it."
Havelock Vetinari |
I look around for anything that can be used as rope.
"I suggest tying him up. Upon finishing what we came here to go, we can let him go." (said in common)
