Animate Dead is an evil spell (it's right there in the spell descriptor in brackets) so regardless of your character's alignment, it will be an evil act. As a GM, I'd be inclined to eventually shift a character over to Evil for repeated use of the spell (or indeed, any evil spell) excepting in very special circumstances where there are no other good options to achieve a task.
Even in a world where animating the dead was not an inherently evil spell, the act of binding corpses to your will is an ethical problem. I would argue most cultures would believe that even in death, a person should have some form of "say" over the use of their body (hence why in the real world you must sign off to have your body used for medical research, why necrophilia is considered a vile act, and why we typically seek people's opinions on how their body is treated in funeral rites).
Not trying to hate on necromancers. Generally if I have a player who wants to do a necromancer but not be evil I turn them towards the White Necromancer (3pp class) which is a great take on it.
The bottom line is that it does not fit the setting as a heroic character. Even if you were a white necromancer, literally no one in Andoran is going to see things from your perspective. Even worse, animating undead is seen as a type of post-death enslavement, and there is absolutely nothing in the entire world that Andorens hate more than slavery. They devote entire branches of their military to wiping out slavery in the entire world, because just outlawing it in their corner isn't good enough for their ethics.

I present to you, Anthony Read, Tiefling Magus Fiend flayer. I'm not sure about the ability scores yet. I don't really like the idea of having a 5 in anything, but I wanted to make sure I had 13 strength for power attack later. So I might change it before the game starts because it still feels really awkward every time I look at it.

Looks good!
Understand that with a 5 charisma that is low enough that I expect it to effect roleplay. Either by making him incredibly ugly (and with his combination of appearance traits I'd say he's pretty ugly, but play it up in the description) or by RPing him as incredibly boorish and insensitive.
Úrtnechech |
@GM of Liberty:
I was out of town and busy all last week. Finally got around to a back story and such for Úrtnechech. I hope the back story does a good job of explaining why is is the way he is.
I used the Ultimate Campaign background generator for the most part. Mostly random results. Just because. I picked somethings arbitrarily because they were way too contradictory with everything else. I also had fun with the names in the back story:silly anagrams, basically.
Let me know what you think of it when you get a chance to look it over.
Thanks!
Úrtnechech ("URT-netch-etch") is a Half-Orc from the city of Sothis in Osirion. Although not brought up in poverty, he knows the life of a city's underbelly. His father, Grulbar, and mother, Chamar-ti, were both locksmiths, and members of the local thieves guild. Úrtnechech learnt much from his parents about making and opening locks. They taught him how to fight with both Falchions and Great Axes, as well as teach him the Abyssal language. Although he never did learn why his parents knew that language.
Úrtnechech has prominent Orc features, even though both his parents were third or fourth generation Half-Orcs who looked almost human. Úrtnechech was therefore the target of frequent ridicule and bullying for his bestial appearance.
After the untimely death of his parents, due to plague, he joined the "Sandy Dancers"; a gang masquerading as entertainers. They were led by by Pambur-set, a wandering human dancing dervish who took Úrtnechech under his wing. The keen senses of Úrtnechech often helped keep the Sandy Dancers avoid the law.
Úrtnechech often collected black market debts for the Sandy Dancers. This experience made him even more intimidating. Úrtnechech killed one debtor; Reshelao-na. He attacked Úrtnechech who came to collect his debts. It was the first time Úrtnechech killed anyone, but he never felt guilt over the killing. He reasoned that Reshelao-na should have known better than make those sorts of debts anyway.
Ironically, Úrtnechech was arrested for petty crimes he did not commit. He was soon sold off to slavers from Katapesh. An expedient, and profitable, way for Sothis authorities to rid themselves of local troublemakers.
While en route to the Katapesh slave port of Okeno, the slaver ship Úrtnechech was on was intercepted by "pirates" from Andoran who liberated the slaves on board. In the confusion, he managed to equip himself with a rag-tag collection of weapons he found in the slavers hold. Soon after, Úrtnechech found himself in the port city of Almas, the capital of Andoran.
While grateful for his release, Úrtnechech soon became restless with Almas, which just seemed too sedate for him. He soon hired himself out as a guard on ships travelling up the Andossan river, eventually making his way into Northern Andoran, to see if he might find some more profitable uses for his talents there.

I would be really happy to play a game with any combination of these characters. Or even just watch! Now that I think about it, if I don't get in, can I still follow along?
I also had a couple of things wrong with my sheet, but I made an updated one on the profile page of this Alias. I'm having trouble finding a picture I like for Anthony, so I'm drawing my own. Its not great, but its mine. I'm going to upload it to the profile as well soon.

I wanted to re arrange the list just to get a better idea of how we are split between the various roles in a party. However as usual there are characters that could fit in more than one category.
-----Arcane------
Michael_Hopkins – Volreg Sundek the Andoren/Ulfen Kineticist (Aether) – Pathfinder, son of Carpenden winemakers (1 game in next month, PFS)
Snake Charmer – Lyrune the elf alchemist – Ex-slave, seeking mother sold to brothel.: (2 games)
Nariel Lauric – aasimar (arcanist) – white mage and gentle healer
-----Divine------
Hogeyhead - Aster Domus the Human Urban Druid – Andoren noble, raised by a wizard, but ended up falling in with a druid cabal: (0 games, new to pbp)
Feth (#1) – Mirode Sharo – elf cleric of Sarenrae, citizen of Oregent, seeking to help ease the suffering of others
-----Multi-skilled------
French Wolf – Herral Hinn the Halfling inquisitor (infiltrator) of Desna – Halfling merchant slash inquisitor of Desna!: (5 games )
CaptainFord – Adrac Rhaddyn the human monk (Ki mystic) – Old adventurer come to Falcon’s Hollow to meet his grand daughter for the first time.: (Already in a Falcon’s Hollow game)
Xunal - Urtnechech – half orc dancing dervish (bard) of Osirion and former bandit
Kubular - Antony Read – tiefling magus and hunter of werewolves
Aleck VARs – fetching rogue – hiding on the Prime Material Plane in Falcons Hollow.
-----Warrior------
Digger – Tarkus Shieldsplitter the dwarf fighter – Blacksmith from Highhelm: (1.5 games)
Orannis – Soroza the Half-orc Urban Ranger – Worshipper of Calistria, seeks to abuse those who exploit sex workers (0 games)
Zahir ibn Mahmoud ibn Jothan – Lieutenant Jansen Naran the Varisian human paladin of Abadar OR bard– Fourth son of an Andoren noble, headed to Falcon’s Hollow to investigate the Lumber Consortium (7 games as player, 1-2 as GM)
Feth - Davi Accerlas – Changeling swashbuckler. Daughter of an Andoren trader, investigating her mother’s call.
Edeldhur – Reknar – cavalier (inspiring commander)
Toxicdragon – Wulfrun Tavernier – human cavalier of the Star, born in Falcon’s Hollow
Apologies to any PC that I have misrepresented, that was not my aim. Reading some of the PCs in some detail makes me fear for Herral's chances, especially with me being in five games.
Cheers

This is a ridiculously good list of characters.
No kidding! I brought my A-game with Soroza here, figuring I had a better than good shot.
But this list is amazing! So *many* strong characters! So many that if I got in, there would still be a couple handfuls worth that I'd be sad not to be playing with.
Good luck, everyone! Literally everyone!

Awesome summary, French Wolf.
I've been meaning to update the submissions list but I've been swamped at work.
#of games is a tiebreaker, folks with 9+ games ultimately have an equal chance as those with 0 as long as your submission is strong. But if there are two or three characters all vying for those last couple slots, yeah, it'll go to tiebreaker.
Anthony Read |
Summary is pretty good for Anthony Read. Really glad you did this. One thing though: Werewolf hunting isn't his main thing, but its a good assumption from my posted backstory. He's more of a freelance adventurer. You can also put me down for 0 play by posts.
I have updated my profile a bit. Added personality and appearance things and a little quote.
I also found out I cannot create a custom avatar which is making me sad... =(
Also wanted to say that Herral was one of my favorite characters here.

Good luck to all fellow applicants.
Lots of interesting stories and characters for the GM to choose from. GM of Liberty sure has a tough job narrowing down the list of applicants. And that "job" stuff doesn't help! There's always something to get in the way of all the fun stuff, isn't there?
But the end result will doubtless be a very colorful group. No doubt about that!
I should point out that whether he makes the cut or not, Úrtnechech is definitely not going to be just another pretty face! Just thought I'd mention the obvious! :D

Yep, Soroza, you have summed up my feelings exactly. Reading into them didn't fill me with confidence for my chances. But we shouldn't be surprised, I mean I have watched many games recently, but I have only applied for two because of the DM's first post and subsequent support of the applicants. It all bodes well for the game.
Cheers

@Alecks Var
Great, thanks!
To everyone else:
I'm going to a continuing education training session for my job until Saturday, so I won't be around here much until then. I'll have time to keep up with my one ongoing campaign and thats it.
I just wanted to say in advance: thanks so much for all your effort and hard work. I hope that the game lives up to your efforts.

Hello friends!
Just a friendly reminder that submissions are due tomorrow. Fluff is more important than crunch. I'll accept a submission that has the fluff all the way complete, but I won't accept a submission that's just a character sheet and no background!
I'll have my decision ready on Saturday sometime in the evening :)

@Volreg: I'm almost jealous of you for having something to keep you distracted. I keep refreshing the page hoping for updates the way one might look into the fridge over and over again to see if there's food.
I'm going to add a few flavor items to my sheet I think. I'm going to stay with 5 charisma after all though, it's too much a part of Anthony now for me to change it.

My solution to constant refreshing is to draft out a half orc character for Giantslayer. We have agreed to all be part of the same tribe - Black Sun mercenaries.
Its a silly exercise because our DM plans for us to roll 5d4 Ironman altogether and build a party from there. Therefore I'm building several different concepts to cover for what I may end up with, depending on whether I roll high Con or Cha, for instance.
Also today is the end of the school spring term so I'll have two little blighters and a wife under my feet for the next two weeks. Chaos reigns.
Cheers one and all
Volreg Sundek |
I generally play PFS, so haven't played any home games and general APs. As for pbp, most of the stuff I did play were mostly in various message boards without any die rolls, so anybody could do pretty much anything, which bored me to tears after a while. I love challenge when it comes to my characters. Without challenge, I don't particularly stay interested, which is why I have only two spell casters (summoner and cleric) in PFS right now, and one is definitely flavored up, rather than all powerful. The other, is a Merciful Healer, which I haven't played just yet, but will next month.
One of my favorite characters, whom is a bard, has died once, and came close many times. Why optimise, when you can have fun?
Woo for chaos! Have the little ones start to learn these styles of games? My roommate's son is trying to learn, and seems to be quite interested.
Volreg Sundek |
Bit disappointed I didn't see this until now, it looks like a cool campaign but...yikes that is a LOT of competition and there's just no way I could pull together a great application for this with only a day to think about what kind of character I'd like to play.
Oh well.
Just think up a couple of concepts and go haywire! Once I saw that occult could be entered, I spent a bit just figuring out how I would play him off. Volreg is from a farming community, so he doesn't know the best manners, but he tries, at times.
If you do try, I wish the best of luck!
GM of Liberty |
Best of luck at the session! Personally, I am kind of glad I haven't had to do any of those for my two jobs....
It's not so bad. Kind of like a mini-vacation that you get paid to do, except with the caveat that you spend 9 hours a day listening to people drone on and on about stuff.

My son's dwarf ranger was captured by goblins, Volreg. He isn't so keen after that. Especially when his npc fighter friend drank a cursed potion and turned into a chicken. He currently plays minecraft whenever we let him.
Daughter is a bit young, although her bluff skill is already impressive.
cheers

I'm sorry, I know it must have been traumatizing for your son, but I just laughed so hard at that. Situations like that are why I love tabletop, so many random funny things can happen.

Yeah, I know the feeling. The roommate's kid wanted to fight a character that was way out of his league, mostly by punching him. I said he could try, but wouldn't like it. One shot, and half health later, he was whining.
I really didn't want to be the bad guy in the situation, so, I had my character stop the encounter, by warning him again.

Hey guys I too am feeling the pain of waiting. my saturday game got canceled (not pbp) so I'm upset. However I have a solution to boredom that I will share with all of you. (I am very wise. I'm super cereal right now)
Roll up a character lvl old school. Really old school 3d6 in order. No rerolls. Funny as hell. Legit rolls only. I will start.
I will note right now that this is for the lulz, and are not submissions. Just in case to avoid confusion. I wanna rock my druid on.

Good thing I don't roll old-school, ha.
Urim Nijin is a gnome ninja. He has a homely, narrow face, balding white hair in a horrible combover, and wears crisp, all-black leather. His eyes are hooded and grey, and his skin is a warm brown. He wields a kusari-gama, but not very effectively, because his sword arm was crippled a year ago in an epic ninja battle against his arch-nemesis who is also his one true love. Despite this, he is still seeking employment as a ninja, because he doesn't have any other marketable skills. He is incredibly gullible, but benevolent.

In other news:
Submissions are now closed.
If you're like sitting at your keyboard frantically typing, post something within the next hour and I will consider your submission.
Otherwise, I have my decision made. I'll post in an hour. It'll be 6 players, which is something I was trying really hard to avoid, but there were two of you I couldn't decide between (and you also were within 1 active pbp of each other to make it worse >_>).
Dun dun dun. Suspense! :O
