Welcome to the Out of Character Discussion Thread for our Skull & Shackles campaign. Please take the time to introduce yourselves and get acquainted. If you have any last minute questions to ask me, go ahead and I'll try to get back to you as quickly as possible, Thanks.
You are currently in a dockside tavern known as The Formidably Maid drowning your sorrows as you wait on shore between ships or searching for something lost.

A thin handsome sailor with an arrogant tilt to his head and mismatched clothes saunters into the bar. He grins wickedly as he looks around and takes a seat at the bar. "Bottle of whatever is clean."
He looks around the room, his blue eyes flashing and his grin wide. "I have a good feeling about tonight, lads! Drink up, for tomorrow we die!"
"Doc" T. J. Juckson |
So who do we have here and what are posting rates like?
Real name is Mike; I'm a biologist at Indiana University although I'll be moving into a PhD program elsewhere sometime next fall.
Once/day is minimal for me; most of the time I can post at least a few times a day. I'm running several other games on here including two APs (Shattered Star and Jade Regent) and a few PFS games.
Speaking of which, GM: I know I mentioned it before, but would you be willing to hand out PFS chronicle sheets after the appropriate sections are finished? It's not a huge deal but I play a lot of PFS locally and the chronicle sheets from this would be appreciated :)
Terry of Quent |
I'm Jeff, a grumpy older man who has a full-time, weekday, Federal civil-service desk job. I am explicitly not allowed to access these forums from work, which means I can post in the evenings only, with any regularity.
I don't play enough PFS on an ongoing basis to care about the certs. I play enough to know that each will need to be issued for a specific character who is in the correct level range (or still short of it). I can support reporting with my PFS number (and a character number) if it is important to the group. It really is NOT important to me.
"No-Eyes" Bellamy |
"Are you truly blind?" the well-groomed man next to Bellamy asks.
"Blind as a bat sure!" Bellamy grinned back. "Gozreh herself saw t' that.
"Can't be blind. Couldn't git 'round on a ship. Any ship, if he was."
"I git around a ship jest fine girly! Any ship. Ye wait an' see!"
He reaches around for his drink and takes some time before he finds it again."I must admit, ashore I ain't so handy."
Dave here, Payroll clerk. I can post briefly during the day, more in the evenings.

Continued from the Recruitment thread...
...
The man in dark shades of red, brown and black smiles a frightening smile at the blind man... the kind of smile a mad man would make on making up his mind to kill someone.
Fortunately for the blind man, he cannot see it.
Taking another swig of rum, Reijo slurs out a deep, gravelly response as his stool teeters almost accidentally closer to No-Eyes. "Glad ye be agreein'. But nob'dy be given me any nicknames, Blindey..." *hic!* "...none 'at be floatin' above Besmara's frigid oggin, at least."
A great belch then escapes the drunken sailor. Unfortunately for the nearby blind man, he still has his sense of smell.
Reijo then takes another swig of rum, and gives the feminine man a squinty look over. With another drunken, frightening smile, his yellowed teeth from a lifetime of smoking and drinking become visible. "An' what be yer story, ye saucy lass?"
The drunken man pays little heed to Doc thus far, but downs the rest of his rum and exclaims "Words o' wisdem," as the arrogant man makes his announcement.
An empty mug is smacked down on the bar once more... another expectant look at the barkeep.
...
I'm Brian, an IT specialist. I can commit to posting once per evening, and may at times be able to post more, depending on the day I'm having.

I'm James. And Mike, I graduated from SPEA at IU Bloomington in 2004! Go Hoosiers! I now live in Davenport Iowa, am 35 and a single dad. I am Assistant City Administrator for a tiny city north of Davenport, where my job affords me much time to check the internet to avoid insanity. I post multiple times per day, and less so on weekends. I play in several PbP games, including one with Marik and I run a Curse of the Crimson Throne PbP on here. In RL I run a weekly Roll20 game with some chums from Southern Indiana and I do a lot of PFS games in the local area. Yo ho yo ho, a pirate's life for me!
Marik Whiterose |
Welcome all,
My name is Mike (Michael when I was in trouble and when it was Michael Patrick then I ran and hid). I live in Schaumburg, a northwest suburb of Chicago. I'm 48 years old (I just celebrated my 30th High School reunion last night and it took me most of today to recover), married with a lovely eight year old daughter. I've worked for American Airlines since 1985 and I generally have ample time to set up my laptop at work and check the boards or to surf the web when I'm bored. About 80% on my posting takes place when I'm at work, then again after 9:00 after Sarah goes to bed (except on Monday nights). I've been playing D&D in all it's incarnations (except 4th Edition) since the mid-late 70's and still game with some of my friends from High School on Monday's (hence the lack of postings on Monday nights). I look forward to running what I hope you will find an exciting well run adventure.
Marik Whiterose |
Just waiting on our Goblin Gunslinger to join us and then we can hit the high seas. If I don't hear from him by this afternoon I'll pick a replacement from the other applicants.
"Doc" T. J. Juckson |
Monday night is our local PFS night so I won't be posting then either. I also run a Reign of Winter campaign on Sunday nights and my friend is starting a Carrion Crown game this Wednesday night but we haven't locked down a set day for that yet.
I'm usually available during the day to update a couple times though.
Marik Whiterose |
NP, Monday night is my RL game as well and I'm generally not available between 6-10 pm CDT.
Ploggy 'Big Ears' Squidwhistler |
"'Allo! I vasn't expectin' to be here, but it's nice ta meet y'all!"
I'm Matt, a 30 something ne'er-do-well, presently a mature-age university student in Tasmania, Australia (Geology and Antarctic Science, to be specific). To be honest I'm surprised (but delighted!) that Ploggy made the cut. While I fully intend to insert some humor into his posts, I promise that he is intended to be a serious addition to the crew. My apologies for keeping you all waiting.
Marik Whiterose |
The Gameplay Thread is now open.
Marik Whiterose |
If you haven't already, please check out the Roll20 link at the top of the thread. I will make tokens for each of you tomorrow and add them to the map.
Ploggy 'Big Ears' Squidwhistler |
So if all of our equipment - bar one small item - has been confiscated, I'm guessing that includes our armor, so I should adjust Ploggy's AC accordingly? I'm hoping that we have a chance to get our gear back at some point, as a gunslinger without a gun is an unhappy gunslinger... :)
Terry of Quent |
You might have noticed in my intro above, I said I'm a Federal civil servant.
I have been sent home and am to stay away from work until Congress funds my job.
I'm trying to entertain myself. If I get too annoying, TELL ME. I can't correct my behavior unless I know it is a problem.
Ploggy 'Big Ears' Squidwhistler |
By the by, you will have noticed that I didn't post Ploggy's climb checks until after everyone else. The reason is simply the time zone difference - all that posting took place overnight from my point of view. So sorry if it looks like I'm being sluggardly when things jump ahead like that, but it will usually be because I'm asleep on the far side of the Pacific from most of you. :)
Terry of Quent |
I've had the same thing happen to me simply because I was at work. One game had a thread explode with over 30 posts during my work day! It takes multiple days for me to get concerned.
Reijo Ilvonen |
Good luck, Jeff. What insanity...
Anyway, lol, looks like one of the pirates made a REALLY big mistake taking Reijo's pipe away. :o
I would recommend drinking heavily...
Reijo approves of this message.
Reijo Ilvonen |
Hope I didn't scare the players away as well, lol. Perhaps now would be a good time to mention that, while unpredictable, in need of anger management skills, and not exactly out for the best interests of the party, I'm not going to let Reijo derail the game. For instance, I'm not at all looking to start a fight this early on, just shooting for some roleplaying fun. Marik, feel free to subject Reijo to a few lashes for his outburst, or whatever other verbal/physical punishment you think they would exact - zero offense will be taken, lol.
Marik Whiterose |
Actually sorry for the delay. Busy day at work, then Parent/Teacher conference afterwards. Just getting a post up now. And don't worry Reijo, Master Scourge hasn't overlooked your outburst.
Marik Whiterose |
Sorry for the delay, we had a family emergency we had to deal with. My 82 year old Father-in-Law went to out to get the mail Thursday night, got confused in the dark and was found by a neighbor wandering down the road, lost. My wife and I have spent the past day checking with the VA and other agencies trying to find out about home healthcare and other avenues of care. I will get back to regular postings this week, thank you for your patience.

Yeah, I saw those too. Are we supposed to pick out a job and start rolling/describing what we want to do for the next X days or is the taskmaster guy going to assign us to stuff first? Don't want to jump ahead if we're not ready for that yet.
Marik Whiterose |
Sorry guys, I got sidetracked again. I pre-rolled your job assignments for the next 20 days under the above spoiler. I will describe your initial morning "muster" then you can go from there. I will change your assignments from time to time to simulate the Bosun's pleasure/displeasure with you. I wanted to get the information up as quickly as I could, but then couldn't follow up right away. I will get things moving again tonight.
Reijo Ilvonen |
I have not specified a location to sneak and explore because I don't see a list of locations to choose from. I'll pick one when I know what I can pick from; otherwise feel free to choose one for me if you want to progress the game before I post again, Marik. If anyone else knows, feel free to share. Btw, do we know where the shop is yet? If not, then that's perhaps my best first place to explore...
To clarify, it's a daytime action, nighttime action, then some sleep, and repeat? Or must we choose the Sleep action for night to get any sleep at all (and be fatigued the next day if not)?
Also, when do we get rum rations, during the night action?
Be back tomorrow for my nighttime actions... sorry, really need to hit the bed now.
Reijo Ilvonen |
Yeah, I agree with Doc. I think it best to do no more than one day for now. I am sure events will occur and NPCs will have things to say back to us... we'd potentially be giving Marik a LOT of retcon work.
I also think I will leave Reijo at the morning action for now, as I am still waiting for some clarification (and may change my mind). I'm figuring the Nighttime action of "sleep" means additional sleep, not that not taking that action means we sleep zero hours (most would do anything else but sleep otherwise). But I want to get an idea of the ship layout, if possible, and what valid choices would be for where I can explore. For instance, would the entire upper deck be a valid choice, or just the poop deck, or the fo'c'sle perhaps? Or the shop?
Terry of Quent |
As a head's up:
I moved 1,000 miles 7 months ago. Thursday night my wife finally arrives.
The movers MIGHT arrive on Friday.
My internet connection changes from one apartment to another on Saturday.
So, the odds are REALLY good that the last meaningful connection with me for this weekend will be on Wednesday.
Reijo Ilvonen |
Good luck, Terry.
And to Marik too. I noticed it's been one week since we last heard from him. I'm still hoping to hear from him soon. This game has been particularly enjoyable for me so far. Here's to hoping for the best, that his situation is becoming manageable at least... though I've not had to deal with his particular scenario, I've had to deal with long-term family medical crises and their aftermaths, so I know it can be all-consuming of one's time and energy, and not at all fun...
Terry of Quent |
Family issues have proven difficult for me in the past, as well.
Hopefully the group is able to help each other handle the stressors, however bad they get.
Marik Whiterose |
Thank you all for your patience with my lack of posting recently. Things have gone from bad to better to worse recently. While my father-in-law hasn't suffered another bout of dementia since last Thursday, we finally got the VA to schedule an in home evaluation visit now all we have to do is convince them to go ahead and do it. Now comes word that Monday night my mother-in-law was taken to the hospital with a prolapsed uterus. My wife left Tuesday morning to be with her and her dad at this time, leaving me to take care of our eight year old daughter and play Mr. Mom until her brother gets down there this weekend.
With things getting this crazy this fast I'm afraid I haven't been able to focus on these games as you deserve and I apologize. I hope things will get back to a more normal pace within the next few weeks and that you can hang in with sporadic postings from me until then. If you feel it's necessary I can remove myself from the campaign and seek a replacement GM (or player). Again I appreciate and thank you for your patience in these trying times.
Mike

Same here. I'll keep checking in. Too often players disappear if there's no activity in several days, and I really want to see an AP through from start to end... so I hope everyone sticks around, and I really like the whole team here... and I am of course looking forward to nicknaming Jack as well. ;)
